Watch out John Holland...we’re coming!
For too long John Holland’s has
managed to hide behind
legislation to keep the CFMEU
from its sites when there have
been safety issues affecting our
members. As of now this has
stopped and you can be assured
that the CFMEU will be keeping a
close eye on Holland sites and
making sure our members go
home safe every night.
Don’t think that John Holland has
agreed to all of this without a fight.
Over the past couple of months
Mick Buchan, Steve McCann and
the union legal team have been
holding meetings with ComCare
and John Holland in order to help
them understand the law.
We’ve dragged them kicking and
screaming to the point where it is
now accepted that the CFMEU has
the right to represent its members in
matters of safety on the job.
The CFMEU will be exercising these
rights in full on John Holland sites
and there’s a range of options we’ll
be using. These include:
• entering the workplace without
notice to inquire into suspected
safety breaches;
• consulting with relevant workers
and inspecting plant or part of the
job relevant to the suspected
breach;
• requiring John Holland to make
copies for us of any document
relevant to the breach and
accessible from the job; and
• warning any worker who is at
serious risk as a result of the
suspected breach.
You can be assured that we will be
using these powers to their fullest
extent and doing our level best to
make sure that each and every worker
on a John Holland job goes home
safely to their family every night.
So the message is this: if you’re on
a John Holland site and you have
safety concerns you now have the
real option of phoning your union
and we’ll be there on site to assist.
