Sport England in the West Midlands (SEWM) has continued to have excellent
working relationships with SASSOT during 2008-2009. We congratulate the
SASSOT Director, core team, executive board and all partners on their continued
progress, which has seen maturing partnership work on a number of
fronts together with notable successes and achievements.
Sport England is pleased to have part-funded the production of a sub-regional
facilities framework for Staffordshire. SEWM regional staff have worked
closely with SASSOT providing check and challenge consultation throughout
its development - SASSOT has responded positively to our suggestions for
improvement and ensured the evidence provided within the framework was
sufficiently robust. In addition, our partnership has worked effectively in the
Building Schools for the Future programme where SEWM staff have been
able to add value to the process at appropriate times.
Congratulations go to staff and partners throughout SASSOT on the significant
achievement of the Advanced Standard for Safeguarding and Protecting
Children in Sport. SEWM also recognise the achievement of a number of
nationally reported targets. Within the Step into Sport programme, SASSOT
once again exceeded the national average for facilitating young volunteers
into local placements.
In terms of National Lottery funding for sport, SASSOT and partners have
worked hard to develop a number of quality applications, which have led to 8
Community Investment Fund awards being made during the year totalling
almost £900,000, towards total project costs of over £3 million. These included
an award of £500,000 to the Stoke PCT ‘Be Healthy & Active’ project.
Sport England has now undergone a major restructure to enable us to effectively
deliver the core elements around grow, sustain and excel within our
2008-11 Strategy and to achieve the overall target of one million people doing
more sport by 2012. SASSOT and the 48 other county sports partnerships are
key partners in the delivery of this strategy, and from 2009-10 will be contracted
by Sport England to support the sub-regional and local delivery of the
new plans of 46 national governing bodies of sport. With SASSOT’s track
record in delivery, exemplary governance arrangements, and well-developed
partnerships and networks, we look forward to working with SASSOT to
achieve continuing success.
