Lake Dauphin was founded in 1739
by Francois de la Verendrye, who
named it after the oldest son of the
King of France. Established as a furtrading
post, “Fort Dauphin” is now a
charming city that extends across the
prairie landscape just to the east of the
Vermillion River. Growing numbers of
fur traders in the 1800’s helped spread
word about fertile land surrounding
Lake Dauphin. With visions of wealth
and freedom, the first frontier settlers
of Scottish and English descent moved
to the valley. Sawmills, flour mills
and trading posts sprang up along the
Vermillion River, Wilson River and the
mouth of the Valley River.
first settled by people from the British
Isles, immigrants soon arrived from
Germany, Central Europe and, most
notably, the Ukraine. Dauphin quickly
emerged as the main trading centre in
central Western Manitoba. Settlements
began to emerge in the 1880’s;
Gartmore (approximately two miles
southwest of the present City) and
Old Dauphin (two miles northeast of
the City). The advent of the railway
Dauphin is the birthplace of World
War I hero Lieutenant-Colonel W.G.
the grass runways.
The No.7 Bombing and Gunnery School opened on June 24, 1941 at
Paulson, located 13 kilometres east of Dauphin on Highway 20. Because
of its proximity, Lake Dauphin was used as a practice bombing
target range, where there are still a few visible remains of a once-thriving
base. There were many crashes in the area and over 50 men lost
their lives. Some of the airmen, from Britain, New Zealand and Australia,
are buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Dauphin. by Ed Stozek
A Labour of Love
Ukrainian settlers first began to arrive to Dauphin in the 1920’s and 30’s.
As Dauphin’s Ukrainian population grew the need for a larger church where
worshippers could congregate arose. So it was that the Historic Ukrainian
Catholic Church of the Resurrection was designed by Father Philip Ruh, and
built by a dedicated group of volunteers between 1936 and 1939. Men,
women and children gladly contributed money and time to construct the
beautiful church. They hauled gravel and wood, mixed cement, did carpentry
and masonry. The women would also prepare hot lunches for the workers
and organized fundraising events such as bazaars, picnics and box socials.
The magnificent painting of the church interior was not done until 1957 by a
man named Theodore Baran. The iconographer from Saskatoon hand painted
the entire church interior. In 1990 when the Ukrainian Catholic Church’s congregation
was it its largest the parish decided to undertake construction of
a new church. The majority of the parishioners had wished to tear down the
current church but a small group of committed volunteers stood up for the
church they knew would one day become an important part of their history.
After they had voiced their concerns, land just across the street was chosen
instead for the new church. This National and Provincial heritage site stands
today only because of the devotion of its volunteers.
Legend Has It…
The Angel
near Sifton
Danylshen, the only son of the Luchuk family, had bought land in the Sifton area in
the early 1900’s. Shortly thereafter, Anna, a young school teacher from Italy moved
to the area. They fell in love and were married. The following July, Luchuk’s true love
and their unborn child died during child birth. To honor her, he had a marble angel (as
pictured above) sent from Italy to be set on her grave. Times were tight during the period
and when the angel arrived he did not have enough money to pay for it. However,
because of the weight of the angel, it was easier for the shipping company to leave the
angel behind rather than send it back to Italy. To this day, many orange lilies grow wild
around the angel and every July a single white lily appears on her grave. It is believed
that it is put there by her loving husband. (map R8) N51°18’23.5” W100°16’54.0
dear diary
Dear Diary
We had so much fun in Dauphin on our family trip last year, that Mom and Dad decided that we
should go for a whole week this year! I was so excited to go back to some of the places
we saw last year, and to see some new things.
DAY 1 It was the last day of school before summer holidays, and we hit the road as soon
as school let out. Dauphin isn’t far away so we were able to get there in time for supper and
check into our campsite in Vermillion Park. We visited the park last year so I couldn’t wait
to stay there in our camper!
DAY 2 There is so much to do in Dauphin! This weekend we were lucky because the
Dauphin Fair is going on, and there is even a parade! We went to the midway and I rode on the
merry-go-round, ate cotton candy, and then got to watch a horse show and pet all kinds of
animals. Did you know that baby goats are called kids, too?
DAY 3 Mom was on the lookout for Brooks & Dunn all day. They are her favorite country
singers and Mom said they were here for a music festival called Countryfest. I like music too,
but Dad and I would rather be on the lookout for wildlife, so we spent the day taking the
Riding Mountain Biosphere Tour. We saw a deer, a moose, and a black bear while were driving but
we also stopped at some interesting places along the way and learned a lot about people
who lived here a long time ago. I always thought that cemeteries were scary, but we
visited some during our tour and they are actually kind of cool. It is really pretty here!
DAY 4 Today we decided to relax around our camper and explore Vermillion Park a little more.
The trails were super fun to ride my bike on and Dad said you can ski on them in the
winter, or even skate on the river. I hope we can come back someday when there is
snow but for now I am glad I can swim in the wading pool! Oh, and dad says that Manitoba’s
only indoor wave pool is in Dauphin!
DAY 5 Shopping day! We were camped so close to downtown that we could walk
everywhere! Mom and I bought some clothes, and souvenirs at the National Ukrainian
photos (pens/book): istockphoto.com
Festival Boutique. We also found really neat jewelry and candles at the Watson Art Centre, all
handmade by people from the Parkland. While were downtown we had lunch at a yummy
restaurant and spent some time relaxing in a park beside the beautiful train station
(I remember that we went there last year to see the Rail Museum). Even Dad had fun on
shopping day!
DAY 6 Baba means ‘Grandma’ in Ukrainian, and they can really cook! We had signed
up for an experience called Baba’s Bread & Borscht, and we got to make everything with
them. We made a soup called borscht and baked bread in an oven made of clay, just
like they did in the old days. They even showed us how they make the clay ovens!
At the end of the day we ate the borscht we made and got to take our bread home
as a souvenir. It was a fun experience and even though we aren’t Ukrainian, we
all agreed that we have to come to the National Ukrainian Festival someday.
DAY 7 It was our last day in Dauphin and there are still so many things we wanted
to see and do. We had already experienced nature, learned about history and culture,
bought souvenirs, and toured the area, but we decided
to pick berries on our way home. There are lots of
farmers here but I didn’t know that you could also be
a berry farmer or a bee farmer. We picked so many
strawberries, raspberries and saskatoons, I think we
will be eating pie until next year!
I took a lot of pictures to remember my trip, but
I can’t wait to come back to Dauphin again. The
people are really friendly and the sun shines a lot!
Maybe next year we can bring my aunt, uncle
and cousin with us so we can show them how
much fun Dauphin is. There is still so much to
do there, so I had better start my wish list as
soon as we get home!
bottom of a salt-water sea. When the
sea disappeared the land was lifted
is a remarkable survivor in Manitoba.
It is not only a fine example of the
kind of modest buildings that were
being erected all over the southern
half of the province, but the site still
contains the original teacherage and
Michael Swistun, who was born in
Marconi School was built in 1922.
The standardized design, produced
by the Department of Education,
was adapted from domestic styles
look, and the placement of
shingles (rather than horizontal
siding) on the walls. Builder Frank
Kennedy produced a solid building
which, restored in 1992, is used as
The Ghost of Whitewater Lake
During WWII, a Prisoner Of War Camp situated by Whitewater Lake
in the Riding Mountain National Park, was home to 450 German prisoners
who were captured in North Africa. One of the prisoners, Max
Neugebauer, was injured while cutting a tree. He was brought to the
Dauphin General Hospital where he died several days later. After much
debate his funeral was held at the St. Viator’s Roman Catholic Church
and his remains were interred at the Dauphin cemetery. His body was
exhumed in 1970 as all deceased German P.O.W.’s in Canada were
buried in Kitchener. The headstone ended up in a ravine and then at
the Fort Dauphin Museum. During the construction of the Archeological
Building the headstone disappeared and is believed to be part of the
cement footings. If a person believes in ghosts then there would be a
possibility that Max’s ghost might still be around. All of his comrades
went back home after the war and Max was left behind to wander the
dance halls on the south side of the RMNP that he and his comrades
frequented, as well as the Dauphin area where he was laid to rest.
