Trembowla Cross of Freedom
Historical Site & Museum
(National Heritage Site,
Provincial Heritage Site)
This historical site and museum honours
the first Ukrainian Catholic Liturgy
celebrated in Canada in 1897. Nearby,
on a bend in the Drifting River, stands
the provincially designated St. Michael’s
Ukrainian Catholic Church (c. 1898)
preserved as the first Ukrainian Catholic
Church in Canada. Other historic
buildings include a grotto, monuments,
pioneer home and school displaying
artefacts from an early Ukrainian
settlement. Originally a wooden cross
was built at the site to commemorate
the pioneer’s freedom in a new land.
Following research by a historian, the
history of the first Cross of Freedom in
Canada became known and a permanent
granite cross was unveiled in 1966.

The Negrych Pioneer Farmstead
(National Heritage Site)
This authentic folk site is deemed as
one of the most impressive in the continent.
Natural landscape surrounds
the oldest and most complete set of
farm buildings built in the Ukrainian
style of the Carpathian Mountain
region of Ukraine. In fact, the site
which was developed between 1897
and 1910 by Wasyl and Anna Negrych,
is believed to be the only complete
Ukrainian pioneer homestead still in
existence in North America.

Peter Fidler’s Grave
Peter Fidler, a British cartographer and
surveyor who worked for the Hudson’s
Bay Company, explored and documented
many of the major rivers throughout
Western Canada. From 1819 -1822,
he was employed at Fort Dauphin as
District Manager for the HBC. He died
on December 17, 1822 and was buried
at the original Fort Dauphin site. A
grave marker stands near where the fort
once stood, although the exact site of
the grave is unknown.

A Labour of Love
Ukrainian settlers first began to arrive to Dauphin in the 1920’s and 30’s.
As Dauphin’s Ukrainian population grew the need for a larger church where
worshippers could congregate arose. So it was that the Historic Ukrainian
Catholic Church of the Resurrection was designed by Father Philip Ruh, and
built by a dedicated group of volunteers between 1936 and 1939. Men,
women and children gladly contributed money and time to construct the
beautiful church. They hauled gravel and wood, mixed cement, did carpentry
and masonry. The women would also prepare hot lunches for the workers
and organized fundraising events such as bazaars, picnics and box socials.
The magnificent painting of the church interior was not done until 1957 by a
man named Theodore Baran. The iconographer from Saskatoon hand painted
the entire church interior. In 1990 when the Ukrainian Catholic Church’s congregation
was it its largest the parish decided to undertake construction of
a new church. The majority of the parishioners had wished to tear down the
current church but a small group of committed volunteers stood up for the
church they knew would one day become an important part of their history.
After they had voiced their concerns, land just across the street was chosen
instead for the new church. This National and Provincial heritage site stands
today only because of the devotion of its volunteers.
