Vermillion Park & Walking Trail<br />
One <strong>of</strong> the most visible wetland environments<br />
and a great place to view<br />
ducks and turtles is Vermillion Park.<br />
With an oxbow known lo<strong>ca</strong>lly as the<br />
“Dead River”, this wetland habitat<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers tremendous opportunity to<br />
view waterfowl and wildlife.<br />
Outdoor enthusiasts <strong>ca</strong>n also explore<br />
the Vermillion River Walking Trail<br />
throughout the four seasons. Walking,<br />
running and cycling during the<br />
summer months transforms into<br />
cross-country skiing, snowshoeing<br />
and ice-skating in the winter. The<br />
trail is lit to allow for evening walks<br />
and groomed for cross-country skiing<br />
during the winter months.<br />
The 3-km trail amongst the unique<br />
flora and fauna highlights the diversity<br />
<strong>of</strong> interacting ecosystems and<br />
different habitat areas. Lo<strong>ca</strong>l naturalist,<br />
William Walley, identified The<br />
Riverine Community, The Woodland<br />
Clearing, The Oxbows, The Closed<br />
Canopy Forest, and The Grassy Clearing<br />
all within this beautiful city park.<br />
Further trail developments are underway<br />
and will honor the exploration<br />
efforts <strong>of</strong> LaVerendrye and Peter<br />
Fidler by extending the trail to the<br />
Fort <strong>Dauphin</strong> Museum.<br />
The park also has many other amenities<br />
for the daily and over-night<br />
visitor, including a <strong>ca</strong>mp host who is<br />
present at Vermillion Park 24 hours<br />
day in the summer months, a full service<br />
<strong>ca</strong>mpground (11 sites plus many<br />
unserviced sites), a playground,<br />
supervised wading pool for the kids,<br />
and picnic sites. (map P17)<br />

Berry Patch<br />
The Berry Patch was initiated as a<br />
Bushel <strong>of</strong> Berries Demonstration<br />
Site to show<strong>ca</strong>se the many different<br />
varieties <strong>of</strong> berry trees that <strong>ca</strong>n be<br />
grown in lo<strong>ca</strong>l areas. Situated on the<br />
west side <strong>of</strong> the CNR Station, this<br />
English style garden features a variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> berries, fruit trees and perennials<br />
making it one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dauphin</strong>’s hidden<br />
treasures. (map P1)<br />
Gartmore Park<br />
One <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dauphin</strong>’s original parks,<br />
Gartmore Park <strong>ca</strong>rries histori<strong>ca</strong>l<br />
signifi<strong>ca</strong>nce to the community. Gartmore<br />
Park is a meeting place for family<br />
gatherings, meetings and picnics.<br />
Through a Manitoba Hometown<br />
Grant, <strong>Dauphin</strong> was able to restore<br />
this park to its former glory, making<br />
Gartmore Park a beautiful place to<br />
stroll through or sit and enjoy a cup<br />
<strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee. (map P8)<br />
Meadowlark Park<br />
Meadowlark Park is the second largest<br />
urban park in the community.<br />
You <strong>ca</strong>n purchase a daily or seasonal<br />
pass from the Parkland Recreation<br />
Complex at 622-3109 to play a<br />
game <strong>of</strong> tennis on one <strong>of</strong> the four<br />
tennis courts, or bring a volleyball<br />
and some friends to enjoy a game<br />
<strong>of</strong> beach volleyball on one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
two courts. You <strong>ca</strong>n also enjoy a few<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> quiet time in this well treed<br />

Playgrounds<br />
<strong>Dauphin</strong> has many playgrounds for<br />
the kids as identified on the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Dauphin</strong> map, included in this guide.<br />
Hidden Valley Sanctuary<br />
This wildlife sanctuary was donated<br />
to the Manitoba Wildlife Federation<br />
by the late Gordon Mitchell. Once<br />
a trapper, Gordon evolved into an<br />
avid naturalist and photographer.<br />
The sanctuary <strong>of</strong>fers hiking, fishing,<br />
snowshoeing and a picnic area<br />
providing excellent opportunity for<br />
viewing and listening to the sounds<br />
<strong>of</strong> wildlife. (map R14)<br />

Rainbow Beach & Lake <strong>Dauphin</strong><br />
Rainbow Beach Provincial Park is<br />
a beautiful beach ridge on Lake<br />
<strong>Dauphin</strong>. Ideal for quiet family gettogethers,<br />
everyone will enjoy scenic<br />
walks along the shore and kids will<br />
keep busy on the playgrounds and<br />
with swimming. Amenities include:<br />
beach and picnic areas, a playground,<br />
ball diamonds, horseshoe pits,<br />
hiking trails, modern washrooms,<br />
showers and <strong>ca</strong>mpsites.<br />
Other near-by beaches and recreational<br />
areas on Lake <strong>Dauphin</strong><br />
include Sifton Beach, Stony Point<br />
Beach, <strong>Dauphin</strong> Beach, and Ochre<br />
