JEGRICKA NATURE PARK<br />
The Jegricka is a Backa river, with a course<br />
running 64 kilometres and, as such, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten<br />
lyrically referred to as “<strong>the</strong> umbilical cord <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<strong>the</strong> Backa wetlands.” The Jegricka <str<strong>on</strong>g>Nature</str<strong>on</strong>g> Park<br />
covers <strong>the</strong> area al<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> river’s banks and runs<br />
through four municipalities: Backa Palanka,<br />
Vrbas, Temerin and Zabalj. Jegricka’s banks<br />
are renowned for having <strong>the</strong> most beautiful<br />
“carpets” <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> white water lilies. The river has an<br />
abundance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rich and diverse wildlife with<br />
many species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fish, amphibians, reptiles and<br />
mammals. It also represents an oasis for water<br />
fowl and importantly, is also home to <strong>the</strong><br />
endangered species – <strong>the</strong> Ferruginous Duck<br />
(Aythya nyroka).<br />

meandering River Tisa. Over time, <strong>the</strong> river<br />
changed its course, leaving stagnant pools,<br />
p<strong>on</strong>ds and swamps behind. Slano Kopovo is<br />
<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> few preserved salt pool areas in <strong>the</strong><br />
regi<strong>on</strong>. Its numerous bird species and rare<br />
flora make <strong>the</strong> reserve very interesting. At <strong>the</strong><br />
end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> 20 th century, Slano Kopovo was<br />
declared an Important Bird Area (IBA) and,<br />
to date, more than 200 different species have<br />
been recorded. During autumn, <strong>the</strong> reserve<br />
attracts as many as 20,000 cranes - a number<br />
<strong>on</strong>ly matched in very few locati<strong>on</strong>s in Europe.<br />
Slano Kopovo was <strong>the</strong> final nesting place <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />
White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) in<br />
<strong>the</strong> country, which vanished from <strong>the</strong>se parts<br />
four decades ago. A few bird watching hides<br />
have been installed for visitors to observe <strong>the</strong><br />
unique bird life <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> salt mines.<br />

UPPER DANUBE RIVER BASIN<br />
Great rivers have always been determined<br />
by fate. On <strong>the</strong> upper course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />
Danube in Vojvodina, within <strong>the</strong> river’s<br />
flood z<strong>on</strong>es, a network <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> meanders, oxbow<br />
channels, river islands and banks sprawl <strong>the</strong><br />
Upper Danube river basin regi<strong>on</strong>. Imagaine<br />
an isolated island surrounded by fields and<br />
villages, <strong>the</strong> area c<strong>on</strong>tinues to preserve<br />
and nurture an extremely large number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
plant and animal species. Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most<br />
important and valued residents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Upper<br />
Danube basin are <strong>the</strong> White-tailed Eagle,<br />
