it’s no surprise that <strong>the</strong> ancient inhabitants<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lepenski Vir chose a fish-like deity –<br />

worshipping <strong>the</strong> very creatures that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

depended <strong>on</strong> and which assured <strong>the</strong>ir survival.<br />

The Ir<strong>on</strong> Gate Gorge and its many secrets <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fer<br />

great possibilities for even <strong>the</strong> most ardent<br />

followers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> commercial and recreati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

fishing with species including trout, sturge<strong>on</strong>,<br />

perch, catfish, carp, pike and bream. The<br />

challenges are great for anglers who may want<br />

to try <strong>the</strong>ir hand in <strong>the</strong> Danube whirlpools.<br />

characteristics. The<br />

territory <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> park<br />

has thick forests that<br />

than 1,100 plant species.Just within <strong>the</strong> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>the</strong> Lepenski Vir reserve, many plant species<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientific relevance have been found, am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> rocks.The many herbaceous plants that<br />

inhabit <strong>the</strong> forests, meadows, rocky outcrops<br />

and cliffs represent a botanical story <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own, which is especially important in <strong>the</strong> case<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Djerdap Tulip (Tulipa hungarica). As<br />

many as four nature reserves are located in <strong>the</strong><br />

municipality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Golubac (Golubac Fortress,<br />

Bojana, Bosman-Sokolovac and Tatar Heights).<br />

They are home to many plant species that are<br />

endemic to <strong>the</strong> entire Balkan peninsula. The<br />

richness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> animal life is well recorded. Am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m are <strong>the</strong> logged and brown l<strong>on</strong>g-eared bat,<br />

edible Dormouse and Golubac fly. Golubac<br />

Fortress, which was first menti<strong>on</strong>ed in 1335<br />

as a Hungarian military fortificati<strong>on</strong>, adds a<br />

distinctive mark <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> history to this part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />

park. Thanks to its diversity and rarities, Djerdap<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park is a real centre <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientific<br />

research in nature. The Great and Small Strbac<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Nature</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reserve, <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> most interesting<br />

parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Park scientifically, as well<br />

as <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its most attractive tourist regi<strong>on</strong>s, has<br />

extremely diverse and extensive prehistoric<br />

relict vegetati<strong>on</strong>. It also boasts a Roman<br />

inscripti<strong>on</strong>, known to science as <strong>the</strong> Tabula<br />

Traiana, which is located at <strong>the</strong> very exit from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ir<strong>on</strong> Gate Gorge. The inscripti<strong>on</strong> dates<br />

back to around 100AD and commemorates <strong>the</strong><br />

Djerdap & <strong>the</strong> mountains <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Eastern <str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
