MOROVIC-BOSUT FOREST<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong> large oak forests dividing <strong>the</strong> three<br />

rivers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sava, Studva and Bosut, Morovic is an<br />

ideal locati<strong>on</strong> for wildlife <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> various species. In<br />

additi<strong>on</strong> to abundant populati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> European<br />

Roe and Fallow deer, <strong>the</strong>se forests are home<br />

to many animals including wild boar and<br />

hare. Vast forests intersected by current river<br />

channels and oxbow lakes, provide ideal<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for many species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> birds, <strong>the</strong> most<br />

important <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which nati<strong>on</strong>ally are <strong>the</strong> Whitetailed<br />

eagle, H<strong>on</strong>ey buzzard, Lesser Spotted<br />

eagle, Black stork, Black woodpecker, Middle<br />

Spotted woodpecker and Collared Flycatcher.<br />

The nearby Brak Canal, which c<strong>on</strong>nects <strong>the</strong><br />

Studva and Bosut, provides excellent c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

for fishing and is rich in freshwater fish -<br />

especially carp, pike, Silver Prussian carp, bream<br />

and Grass carp.<br />

Special <str<strong>on</strong>g>Nature</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reserve<br />

OBEDSKA MARSH<br />

One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s oldest natural reserves, it<br />

has been protected status since <strong>the</strong> end<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> 19 th century. The ruling Austria-<br />

Hungary Habsburgs first<br />

proclaimed <strong>the</strong> marsh<br />

a royal hunting ground<br />

in 1874, and from 1919 it became a hunting<br />

ground <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Karadjordjevic dynasty. A<br />

seas<strong>on</strong>al floodplain <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> River Sava, Obedska<br />

is an oxbow lake surrounded by forests <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

oak, willow and poplar. The largest p<strong>on</strong>d is<br />

an au<strong>the</strong>ntic complex <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stagnant tributaries,<br />

marshes, reed beds, wet meadows and forests.<br />

It is home to dormice, water voles, rabbits,<br />

hedgehogs, wild boar and roe deer, as well as<br />

a<br />

large number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

insects. The<br />

most<br />

outstanding examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> marsh’s plant<br />

life are perhaps <strong>the</strong> white and yellow water<br />

lily, <strong>the</strong> water soldier (Stratiotes aloides) and<br />

bladderwort. There are around 180 species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fungi at Obedska marsh, including <strong>the</strong> Boletus<br />

edulis, Golden chanterelle, Giant puffball and<br />

Parasol mushroom. Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> amphibian<br />

residents <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>the</strong> Danube Crested Newt,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Smooth or Comm<strong>on</strong> Newt and Eastern<br />

Spadefoot Toad, while reptiles include <strong>the</strong><br />

European p<strong>on</strong>d terrapin, European Green<br />

Lizard, slowworm, Aesculapian Snake, Grass<br />

snake, and <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>on</strong> European adder. The marsh<br />

is also home to many species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> birds.<br />
