a great many water birds, <strong>the</strong> whole area has<br />

been declared an internati<strong>on</strong>al Important<br />

Bird Area (IBA). This is <strong>the</strong> nesting place <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>the</strong> Little egret, Squacco Her<strong>on</strong>, Ibis and Sand<br />

martin. The Pygmy Cormorant – universally<br />

threatened species in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g> – has a stable<br />

nesting area here. The Sand martin is a special<br />

attracti<strong>on</strong>, as it bores holes in <strong>the</strong> entire stretch<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sand banks, forming unusually interesting<br />

shapes. Here <strong>the</strong> sandy banks <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Danube<br />

host Europe’s largest col<strong>on</strong>y <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sand martins,<br />

with about 15,000 pairs.<br />

The Sands are characterised by large<br />

fluctuati<strong>on</strong>s, day-night and summer-winter, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

air temperature, amplitude and surface soil.<br />

The Kosava is <strong>the</strong> predominant wind, which<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten blows at hurricane speeds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> up to 180<br />

km per hour.<br />

The natural characteristics and uniqueness <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

this regi<strong>on</strong> make Deliblato Sands suitable for<br />

different types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> recreati<strong>on</strong>. Devojacki Bunar<br />

VRSAC MOUNTAINS<br />

Just like Fruska Gora, <strong>the</strong> Vrsac mountains<br />

also rise suddenly out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> seemingly endless<br />

flatlands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Vojvodina plains. Their Guduric’s<br />

Peak, at 641m/asl, is Vojvodina’s highest point.<br />

Nestled against <strong>the</strong> Carpathian mountain range,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Vrsac mountains are a natural link between<br />

<strong>the</strong> flora and fauna worlds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mountain and plain<br />

landscapes. Known for its diverse flora, especially<br />

medicinal herbs, and mild climate, <strong>the</strong> area is<br />
