ZASAVICA<br />
Throughout history, between <strong>the</strong> shifting<br />
courses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Sava, Drina and Zasavica,<br />
through <strong>the</strong> Macva Plain, opposite <strong>the</strong> town<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sremska Mitrovica, <strong>the</strong>re has been a<br />
swamp nurturing all manner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> unusual flora<br />
and fauna.<br />

wealth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant and animal species, traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />
way <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> river life and an historic heritage<br />

The River Zasavica empties into <strong>the</strong> Sava,<br />
but is supplied by <strong>the</strong> cold waters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />
Drina. These c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s are ideal for <strong>the</strong><br />
Mud minnow (Umbra krameri), <strong>the</strong> symbol<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zasavica. The reserve’s waters are home<br />
to more than 250 species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> algae and attract<br />
38 per cent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all amphibians and reptiles in<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />
This wetland is also a haven for birds.<br />
