MOUNT RUDNIK (MINE)<br />
In <strong>the</strong> distant past Mount Rudnik was a site<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> live mining activity. Before <strong>the</strong> arrival<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong> Romans, <strong>the</strong> area was inhabited by<br />
<strong>the</strong> Illyrians, followed by <strong>the</strong> Celts. The first<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g>n dinar with Cyrillic inscripti<strong>on</strong> – <strong>the</strong><br />
dinar <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> King Dragutin – was minted at<br />
Rudnik. In <strong>the</strong> 14 th century, <strong>the</strong> people <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Dubrovnik and <strong>the</strong> Sax<strong>on</strong>s had col<strong>on</strong>ies<br />
<strong>the</strong>re. Rudnik gained special significance<br />
after <strong>the</strong> year 1441, when <strong>the</strong> Ottoman<br />
Turks c<strong>on</strong>quered Novo Brdo (New Hill). The<br />
revered <str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g>n Despot Djuradj Brankovic<br />
had a mint and summer villa <strong>the</strong>re. The<br />
mountain’s mineral resources (silver, lead,<br />
copper) were not <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly source <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<br />
rulers’ wealth. Rudnik was a settlement<br />
with developed handicrafts and a buoyant<br />
trading post which became a a cosmopolitan<br />
city with a str<strong>on</strong>g cultural influence that<br />
spread to all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Serbia</str<strong>on</strong>g>.Mount Rudnik still<br />
dominates <strong>the</strong> Sumadija regi<strong>on</strong> today, but<br />
its cultural, political and o<strong>the</strong>r influences<br />
have incomparably diminished. What has<br />
not changed though is <strong>the</strong> beauty <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>the</strong><br />
landscape.Rudnik’s highest peak is Veliki<br />
Sturac (1132 m), also known as Cvijic’s peak.<br />
In additi<strong>on</strong> to this peak, <strong>the</strong> beauty and<br />
height <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Medium and Small Sturac, Molitve,<br />
Paljevine and Marijanac – all above 1,000m/<br />
asl – stand out. Covered with deciduous<br />
mainly beech, forests, clean air and a<br />
favourable climate, Rudnik is suitable for<br />
summer and winter health programmes in<br />
additi<strong>on</strong> to educati<strong>on</strong>al and sports tourism.<br />
A network <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> health paths complement <strong>the</strong><br />
area’s climatic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s: a high number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
sunny days throughout <strong>the</strong> year, clean air<br />
currents with high i<strong>on</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> and unpolluted<br />
