Social Accountability Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, “America is great because she is good and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great. American civilization is like a three-legged stool, with government and the private sector being two legs and the third being civil society, the place where we live, educate our kids, worship our God, and associate with our neighbors.” The nonprofit public benefit corporation is unique to the USA and fills a vital role in our society. Nonprofit organizations have long enjoyed the status of exemption from income taxes, and in many cases real estate taxes, because they fulfill a vital public good. But we have not done a good job in reporting what we do, even though as nonprofits we’ve known that we are engaged in good work. This year, we are including a social accountability report with this annual report. This year’s report is not complete because we have not been able to educate all of our managers and staff to the importance of documenting what we do. We know that we do good and great things, but it’s simply part of what we do, and we do it without a second thought. Unfortunately, the general public does not know the good that we do and, therefore, we are including this report. During the course of the year, rental concessions were made by our communities in the amount of over $1.3 million, together with contributions from the Resident Benevolence Fund in the amount of $14,700. These benevolence and concessions enable our residents to continue to live in our facilities even though their resources are diminished. In addition, another $260,000 in fees for rent and service was written off as uncollectible. During the past year, we also had “forced” charity in the form of contractual adjustments from Medicare and Medicaid of almost $2.9 million. Benevolent care and rental concessions are voluntary; write-offs and reduced reimbursements are not, and we must count on our private-pay residents and charitable contributions to make up the balance. Obviously, one cannot stay in business by collecting less for a service than it costs to deliver that service without receiving assistance from other sources. communities. Thus, as I stated, the report is incomplete and the statistics are much larger than reported here. Eighteen of our communities reported that there were 276 RHF staff members and residents who volunteered over 4,200 hours outside their homes to 186 worthy causes such as Girl Scouts, retired senior volunteer programs, Boy Scouts, DARE, animal shelters and rescues, homeless shelters, hospitals, associations for the blind and disabled, schools, little leagues, soccer leagues, and other youth programs. Sixteen of our communities reported that they had hosted 1,080 meetings in RHF buildings, such as church groups, foster grandparents, glaucoma screenings, retired senior volunteer programs, agency on aging meetings, and many youth groups. RHF staff and residents donated money to 186 other worthy causes such as church groups, children in need, Leukemia Foundation, UNICEF, American Red Cross, service clubs, etc. It’s important to recognize that we give back to society. Moreover, society in general sees us as worthy of their gifts. The Bank of America notified us of a $200,000 grant over two years to benefit the Resident Benevolence Fund and the Children’s Education Fund. The RHF Circle of Friends Legacy Society grew to 16 members with over $1.2 million from planned gifts during 2004. In the past year, RHF and our communities have received donations of over $238,350 in financial support of our mission. We expanded our Children’s Education Fund to benefit young adults living in RHF communities to attend college or vocational training. We also gave back to our communities the benefits of 2,450 jobs. Plus, whenever we build a new community, there are significant dollars infused into that area through construction contracts. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and next year we expect to be able to report even more significant numbers to you because, in many ways that we are not currently tracking, RHF and our communities make a real positive difference wherever we live and work. RHF believes in reinvesting in our staff, and we held three-day management education conferences in our various regions around the country plus a five-day national market rate administrator’s conference. Local community board members were also invited to attend these education sessions. Seven team members were reimbursed tuition for continuing education. Through the donations of residents and staff, Mattel, Inc. and Hasbro, Inc., holiday toys were distributed to 710 children who live in RHF communities for economically disadvantaged families. Eighteen residents from St. Mary Tower and Bixby Knolls Towers volunteered to wrap these toys, along with Alice Sexton, Advisory Commission member. There were 420 persons who volunteered approximately 14,200 hours to RHF communities to help with arts and crafts, bible discussions, blood pressure clinics, transportation, council meetings, photocopying, filing, potluck parties, publications, reading, landscaping care, and translation. This does not include the countless hours that our 356 local community and national board members contribute each year. We have 149 communities in 24 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and these were the hours reported by only 31 of these 14 A NEW VISION FOR TOMORROW
