Memorial Tributes Rev. M. Clark Harshfield April 11, 1914 – January 11, 2005 Clark Harshfield, one of the founders of Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF) and Executive Director from 1967 until 1987, died on January 11, 2005 at Bixby Knolls Healthcare and Rehab Center, Long Beach. He was preceded in death by his wife Verna and a son, Stephen, and he is survived by a daughter, Rachel and her husband, a grandson, brother and sister, nieces and nephews. Born in Fredonia, Kansas, Clark graduated from Fredonia High School as valedictorian, attended Independence College and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Emporia in Kansas. In 1939, he graduated summa cum laude from the Chicago Theological Seminary. After ordination, he served rural Congregational Churches in South Dakota, and served on the Conference staff of South Dakota, and then joined the staff of Yankton College, School of Theology. One of his students, Rev. Reinhold Klein, later became a founder of RHF, together with Steve Pilibos and Clark. In 1955, the Harshfields moved to California where he joined the Congregational Conference of Southern California and the Southwest. In his role as Minister of Evangelism and Church Extension, he was responsible for more than 44 new church starts and relocations from 1955 to 1965. In 1955, he met Palmer and Helen Conner who established the Plymouth Foundation. The Plymouth Foundation helped to launch these new church starts and also RHF. Over the years he received many awards, including a Certificate of Recognition from the State Department of Aging, a special award from the California Association of Homes and Services for the Aging; the Hall of Fame award and the Executive of the Year award from the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries; a Meritorious Service award from the City Council of Los Angeles; then in 1986 he and his wife, Verna, were honored as the Most Remarkable Seniors in Southern California at the Senior Exposition in Los Angeles. He also received the RHF Friend of the Elderly award in 1987. Clark’s own words summarize his outlook on life. He said, “I’ve had from youth a strange but persisting and naïve faith in providence. Regardless of what the hand of God provides in song and sorrow, I am positive that the final orchestrations will be glorious.” Mayflower Gardens was RHF’s first community. It is, therefore, fitting that the new community to be completed with a recent HUD 202 award will be called Harshfield Terrace. Jean Moore Warrick May 11, 1929 – December 14, 2004 Jean Moore Warrick died at her home in Carlsbad, California on December 14, 2004. She is survived by her husband, William L. Warrick, a brother and a niece. Jean Moore was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Drexel University, Philadelphia, in 1951. From that time until her retirement, she worked for the Atlantic Richfield Company, first as Manager of Emergency Planning, later as Manager of Major Office Projects, and then Manager of Equal Opportunity Affairs. She started at ARCO in various secretarial positions, and when she became part of senior management she had the highest ranking position held by a woman, thus “cracking the glass ceiling” and paving the way for women to become part of senior management. She began her volunteer work with RHF in September 1980 by serving on the Angelus Plaza Advisory Board. Angelus Plaza opened the following year. In 1983, she became the first woman to be elected to the RHF Board, and later served as Board Chair from 1994 to 1999. She was involved in the launching of the RHF Foundation and the Resident Benevolence Fund. She was a generous donor of both her time and her resources. In the 1997 annual report, Jean wrote about the importance of volunteerism and how she became involved with RHF. She said, “I feel incredibly fortunate. What I’ve gotten back far exceeds whatever I might have given. Recently, I was asked to give a speech for a local Rotary club about Retirement Housing Foundation. When I was told I had 20 minutes to speak, I had a momentary fear that I might not be able to find enough material to fill up the time. When I gave my talk, I found I was still going strong at the end of a half hour, with more that I wanted to say. It made me very much aware of how much pride and pleasure I have in my relationship with RHF. Thank you, Retirement Housing Foundation.” And we say thank you, Jean Moore Warrick for all that you have done and continue to do for RHF and our residents. Through the Jean Moore Warrick Endowment for Resident Benevolence funded by family and friends and your estate, you continue to support the mission and our vision for tomorrow. Joseph A. Murray 1920 – 2004 Joseph A. Murray, a recent resident of Pioneer Towers, Sacramento, California, died at Sutter Memorial Hospital on June 26, 2004. Mr. Murray served for several decades as an executive, and later as owner, of the Wm. D. Jones Insurance Agency of Sacramento, California, and became involved with RHF with the original planning of Trinity House in 1964. He soon took the lead on that project and then became Board Chair of RHF and was eventually Board Chair of Trinity House, Pioneer Towers, and Pioneer House, the three facilities of Cathedral Pioneer Church Homes. When he retired from his local insurance business, he moved to Long Beach and became Chief Operating Officer of RHF. He remained in that position for many years and then returned to Sacramento about 15 years ago. He was a fantastic worker for Pioneer Church during all of his years in Sacramento. 4 A NEW VISION FOR TOMORROW
ANNUAL REPORT 2004 5 Our Vision The vision of Retirement Housing Foundation is a society in which all persons may have safe, decent, secure, and affordable shelter which eliminates circumstances where some persons need to make desperate choices between paying rent or purchasing food or medications. We seek to be an effective instrument for providing housing and services for older adults, especially those with limited income, persons with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged families. Our Philosophy and Values • Weare faith based and mission driven. • We believe each person is a child of God and is loved by God, and as such each one is to be treated with respect and dignity. • We are proud of our roots in and our relationship with the United Church of Christ. However, we honor the faith and traditions of every religion and the nonreligious, and we will not attempt to impose our faith on others. • We will advocate for public policies which enhance the lives of those whom we seek to serve. • We will be ethical in our business arrangements and we will strive to hold our vendors to the same high standards. • Our concern for the whole person includes our residents and their families and our staff, and we will strive to be fair in all our relationships. • We believe the nonprofit community has unique responsibilities and opportunities to provide shelter and services, especially for those who are most vulnerable in society. • We will practice sound business principles. • We will serve and employ without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, gender, religion, ancestry, age, marital status, physical disability, medical condition including pregnancy, familial status, or sexual orientation. • In order to be sure that we are treating our team members fairly and being equitable and competitive in our compensation packages, we will periodically engage experts to provide guidelines for compensation and benefits. Retirement Housing Foundation is committed to serving its residents and their local communities. Our Logo Retirement Housing Foundation’s logo is a registered trademark that represents the integration of our mission with our Christian heritage. What appears to be a snowflake is actually a grouping of four houses and four apartment buildings. The buildings are joined together by a cross, representing our Christian tradition and the motivating force of RHF’s mission. The diamond shape of the logo emphasizes our sense of community, and the houses have open doors, symbolizing availability to those who need housing. The logo points in all directions - East, West, North and South - signifying our geographical diversity and inclusiveness. 5
