Category 5: General Criminality<br />

CATEGORY V: GENERAL CRIMINALITY (Score 0 – 6 Points)<br />

The Basic Principle: General criminality is one of the two main factors that have<br />

been established as risk predictors for sexual recidivism (the other being sexual<br />

deviance – Hanson & Bussière, 1<strong>99</strong>8; Hanson & Morton-Bourgon, 2005).<br />

Offenders vary on the density and variety of criminal behaviour, and those with<br />

an extensive criminal history are at increased risk for all forms of recidivism<br />

(sexual, violent, non-violent).<br />

This category contains five items:<br />

Any Prior Involvement with the Criminal Justice System (Score 0-1<br />

point).<br />

Prior Sentencing Occasions for Anything (Score 0-2 points).<br />

Any Community Supervision Violation (Score 0-1 point).<br />

Years Free Prior to Index Sex Offence (Score 0-1 point).<br />

Any Prior Non-Sexual Violence Sentencing Occasion (Score 0-1<br />

point).<br />

To calculate the total score for the “General Criminality” subscale, score all five<br />

individual items to get the raw score for each item. Sum the raw scores for the<br />

five items. The summed raw scores are recoded according to the table below to<br />

obtain the subscale score for the category “General Criminality”:<br />
