Millions roll in 

for Keno wins 

THERE is no question about it, the 

Redcliffe Leagues Club is the 

luckiest club in Australia. 

A 61-year-old club member having a 

leisurely day out with her family at the club 

had no idea that Saturday, August 16 would be 

the day that would change her life, forever. 

Playing a standard game of Keno with 10 

lucky numbers selected, who would have 

thought that all 10 numbers would come up. 

When checking the details with the 

attendant, staff and guests alike could hardly 

believe the win would add up to a whopping 

$3.14 million. 

“The news of the Keno win spread quickly”, 

said club marketing manager Crystal Bishop. 

“We are so excited that one of our valued 

members had this great win within the club.” 

But this is hardly a rare occurrence at the 

Dolphins. In the past 2 1 / 2 years, there have 

been three multimillion-dollar Keno winners 

within the club. 

Before the August 16 big win, the most 

recent Keno winner walked away with $2.3 

million back in February last year. Before 

then, there was a $1.2 million winner in April 

2012. 

“Having three different million dollar 

winners within our club every year for the past 

three years is such a fantastic result for our 

club members and guests,” Crystal said. 

Anniversary for group 

THE Moreton Bay Social Group, which meets 

at the Redcliffe Leagues Club, is 10 years 

young. 

Founded by Maureen Osborne who is the 

current co-ordinator, the group celebrated its 

10th anniversary on August 31. 

“For 10 years we have been getting together 

at the club on a Monday evening,” Maureen 

said. “We have 45 plus members with most of 

us in our 50s and 60s. 

“We are a mixture of singles and couples

players are the luckiest in Queensland. 

From the past 16 Keno jackpot winners 

across 900 venues in Queensland, the club has 

sold tickets to three of them – this means that 

18% of Queensland Keno jackpot winners in 

the past three years were from the club. 

The Dolphins began their talent for finding 

Keno winners almost 17 years ago in 1997 

when two club members walked away with the 

first multimillion-dollar Keno win. 

The “two Johns” won a record $2 million on 

October 24, 1997 when putting on their 

standard Keno games while having a drink at 

their local club. Since then, no other venue has 

been able to compete with the Dolphins’ Keno 

winning streak. 

With odds clearly in the Dolphins favour, 

there really is no reason to try your luck 

anywhere else.

THIS month will feature 

one of the highlights 

of the 2014 season with 

the Murri Rugby League 

carnival on Dolphin Oval. 

As hosts, we expect a total 

of 30,000 people through the 

gates over the four days of the 

carnival, which is being held 

in co-operation with the 

Queensland Aboriginal and 

Islander Health Council, 

Moreton Bay Regional Bay 

Council and Arthur Beetson 

Foundation. 

Our staff have been 

working closely with Murri 

Rugby League coordinators 

for months ahead of this 

carnival, which runs from 

September 25-28. 

Many of the matches also 

will be broadcast on NITV, 

including ladies and junior 

fixtures, highlighting our 

facilities, with the spending 

power of the visitors filtering 

through to the Peninsula’s 

accommodation and dining 

establishments. 

The Dolphins also will be 

well represented in teams at 

the carnival with Liam 

Georgetown lining up for a 

tilt at the title. 

The grounds staff are 

already working hard to have 

Dolphin Oval and the Dick 

‘Tosser’ Turner string of 

fields up to their best. 

Hopefully the recent rain 

will assist with some fresh 

growth and condition of the 

soil. Regardless, I know that 

Glen and his team of staff will 

do their best as always. 

The Redcliffe Leagues 

Club will host the event’s gala 

opening dinner and I hear that 

several high-profile 

politicians will be attending. 

With another election 

looming, it is pertinent to 

present just what our game of 

rugby league gives to 

Redcliffe, our surrounding 

districts and the far-reaching 

groups to which our complex 

can assist. 

If Dolphin Stadium comes 

to fruition, the Murri Rugby 

League carnival is the type of 

event we could be attracting 

annually in addition to so 

many others.

WHILE mentioning 

Liam, congratulations go to 

him and his family on 

reaching 150 matches for 

the Dolphins. 

I previewed this achievement 

in the previous issue 

and all came true. Let’s 

hope Liam can overcome 

niggling injuries and move 

on to 200 fixtures.

IT would be remiss of me 

not to talk about our visit to 

Longreach last month. 

I’m sure I can speak for the 

remainder of the party in 

saying how much we enjoyed 

our time in western 

Queensland. 

For us who live in the 

metropolitan area, it’s 

essential we gain a feel for 

those who live in country 

areas. We had a terrific time in 

our two days in the western 

Queensland town with 

everyone enjoying an hourand-a-half 

long show in the 

Stockman’s Hall of Fame 

where a horseman showed off 

his horse’s skills working 

with sheep and dogs while his 

daughters put on a whipcracking 

show. 

Myself, Tony Obst and 

Trevor Day managed to sneak 

half a morning looking over 

the museum and we were 

intrigued by the scope and 

imagination of the displays. 

We were told between 

March and October the town 

booms with visitors before it 

becomes too hot for everyone. 

The surrounding countryside 

was very dry, however 

the hospitality was 

overwhelming and we can’t 

speak too highly of 

Longreach. 

Tony left Longreach 46 

years ago for the Dolphins but 

he was forever being greeted 

by locals as Boxer, his 

nickname out there, and was 

one of the best-known faces 

in the town. 

It was great to see the 

National Rugby League CEO 

David Smith in town for our 

match, along with his QRL 

counterpart Rob Moore and 

several board members. 

I know David was in 

Brisbane on the Friday and 

had to return to Sydney that 

afternoon for an urgent 

meeting before coming back 

to Brisbane that evening and 

heading off for Longreach on 

the Saturday morning. 

It shows that the code’s 

governing bodies are willing 

to support the grassroots areas 

and that the second-tier Intrust 

Super Cup figures in their 

calculations. 

The Dolphins already have 

told the QRL that we would 

be willing to play more than 

one match a season in a 

country area following on the 

success of our past visits to 

Roma and Longreach. 

Our players enjoyed 

themselves with a victory, 

Murri carnival will be show-stopper 

even though they might have 

lost a bit of bark that was 

forgotten in a return to form. 

Our front-rowers in David 

Hala and Jon Green set the 

platform with strong efforts 

while youngster Alex Bishop 

made his Cup debut, bringing 

the number of players from 

Troy Lindsay’s 2012 

premiership-winning Colts 

side to make it through to first 

grade to well over 10. 

The experience these 

youngsters have gained this 

season in their top grade stints 

will stand them in good stead 

for seasons ahead.

The feasibility study will be an extremely 

thorough document which hopefully indicates 

the need for the boutique stadium and the value

stadium’s varied use, the community need, 

economic benefit and financial viability.

COUNTRY WEEK KICKS A GOAL 

BEFORE the ball was kicked off, both 

clubs were facing the prospect of 

missing out on finals football in 2014. 

If you thought the 34 players would 

approach their Get In The Game Country 

Week clash as a dead rubber then you would 

have been wrong. 

The Burleigh Bears hung on to the faintest 

of hopes of reaching the top five before the 

game while the Dolphins knew of that fate 

two weeks ago. 

It will go down as a season of under

achievement for both teams but the Dolphins 

drew some confidence from their performance 

to allow for some positive thoughts about 

next season. 

The match itself staged at the Longreach 

Showgrounds provided great entertainment 

for the 2000-strong local crowd. 

At the same time it showcased what a 

strong competition the state of Queensland 

has in the Intrust Super Cup. 

Both sides started the match strongly with 

attacking raids being launched from all corners 

of the field. The Dolphins took the early 

points with halfback Cameron Cullen proving 

almost untouchable throughout the game in a 

man of the match performance. 

It saw him make multiple breaks into the 

back field before linking with teammates to 

finish off the movements. 

Burleigh provided tough opposition 

through the 80 minutes. With just over 10 

minutes left on the clock, they got to within 

14 points of their opposition before the 

Dolphins, courtesy of another Cullen break 

with the polish provided by the ever-lurking 

Zach Strasser, scored to secure a muchneeded 

victory at 38-16. 

It was a fitting end to Country Week. 

Players from both teams walked the lap 

around the showgrounds to thank the crowd 

for their contributions to what was a 

memorable trip out west. 

The Dolphins’ development staff also did a 

great job spreading the word to the town and 

surrounding areas of Ilfracombe and 

Barcaldine.

HE Dolphins’ Colts will bid for another 

premiership in next month’s finals series. 

Redcliffe possesses a proud record in the Colts 

competition, taking nine titles in the past quarter century 

from 1988. Ironically, the club’s last Colts title was in 

2012 when Troy Lindsay held the coaching reins. 

Brendan Lam is again the man in charge and has his 

young charges sitting second behind minor premiers 

Burleigh Bears. 

But as he said, the finals series is another competition 

in itself and his side has an opportunity of going one 

better than last year’s grand final loss. 

Fixtures against Norths and Ipswich remain before the 

semis start and Lam said it was up to his players whether 

they secured a top two spot. 

“We want to finish off the season strongly so we have 

momentum and great preparation going into the finals, 

not being comfortable with our past performances and 

achievements this year so far,” he said. 

Lam has been aided by the blooding of several key 

players in the Intrust Super Cup ranks. Prop Tyson Cleal 

and hooker Hayden Hansen gained an insight into the 

next level with outings for Lindsay. 

Fullback Josh Beehag also was selected as 18th man 

for the Country Week fixture in Longreach. 

Representative match-winner Jeremy Skelton is a 

couple of weeks off returning while Jacob Karene is also 

on the way back. After the weekend performance against 

Wynnum, the Colts lost another two players to major 

injury in Reece Vincent and Sam Elwin. 

After carrying a large squad of 28, Lam could soon face 

the task of trimming his contingent for the finals series. 

Rep commitments, injuries and call-ups by higher 

grades meant he drafted three other under 18s to his 

squad last month, all of whom he said did a wonderful 

job. 

“It’s all about opportunities and timing and the under 

18-year olds can see that if they perform and have 

patience, they will be included in the Colts or senior 

squads,” he said. 

“Otherwise it gives the players a good grounding for 

what is required at a senior level and a feel for what’s 

needed to succeed.” 

Fullback spot solved 

has been something of a 

FULLBACK quandary for the Village Motors 

Dolphins this season. 

The loss of Joey Bond in the off-season was 

a blow in terms of experience and our attack. 

But from every setback there comes a light 

at the end of the tunnel. We started the 

season with Broncos import Stewart Mills at 

fullback and he did well playing out of his 

normal position on the wing. 

However Stew quit the Broncos and 

headed back to Sydney. This forced us to try 

youngster Paul Byrnes in the No. 1 spot. 

Paul, who joined us after being squeezed 

out of the Broncos under 20s, was gaining in 

confidence, playing better and better each 

week. 

Although he was enjoying his time with us, 

Paul was called up by the Broncos because of 

injuries and finds himself back in their under 

20 line-up. 

Just turned 19, Paul joins Dolphin Tom 

Opacic, who has been one of the stars of 

their backline, now finding himself cemented 

in the centres. 

Oliver Regan had a couple of matches at 

the back for us, however at this stage of his 

career he is more suited to the wing. 

So our hand was forced and we selected 

starting halfback Adrian Davis at the back. 

After a hesitant start, Adrian has bloomed and 

has been among our best each week for the 

past month. 

Always a good talker, he is a good defender 

who doesn’t give up in a pursuit and offers a 

lot in attack. It’s just like having an extra half in 

our side as he often finds himself at second 

receiver or bobbing up in third and fourth 

stages of play. 

At times he is electric in attack and now is 

an automatic choice at No. 1. Adrian might 

not be overly rapt in playing fullback, but he is 

a team man and is doing it as it’s best for the 

team.

BACKLINE star Liam Georgetown 

has celebrated his 150th first grade 

match for the red and whites. 

Liam, a one-club man, has scored a lot 

of tries and kicked hundreds of goals for 

Redcliffe in his career and keeps on 

keeping on. 

His roll call of representative honours 

such as Queensland Residents and club

Trophy are testament to the quality of 

Liam’s play. 

A niggling knee injury has hampered 

his career, but I would be surprised if he 

did not make the magic 200 figure.

THE club’s visit to Longreach last month 

for the Country Week celebration was great 

in many ways. 

Not only did our side play good footy, but 

our players became engaged with the kids out 

west. The visit was good for the bush and the 

Dolphins appreciated the warm welcome 

they received from everyone. 

It was fantastic to see how excited local 

kids were to receive posters, caps and hats 

from our players and the players conducted a 

clinic for youngsters on the Saturday morning 

after spending time the previous night 

watching a demonstration at the Australian 

Stockman’s Hall of Fame. 

As somewhat of a bushie myself, I know the 

time and effort that goes into training horses 

and dogs to stage a show of that calibre.

REDCLIFFE OLD BOYS 

WELL, within the blink of an eye and 

spring is just about upon us. 

And with this it means September 

and footy finals. I would like to take this 

opportunity on behalf of all Old Boys to 

wish every Redcliffe side involved in 

finals the best of luck and hope the ball 

bounces your way on the day. 

Good news is always welcome and 

on this note hasn’t it been great to see 

our life member Ritchie Venus after a 

long illness once again being on the hill 

and supporting his beloved Dolphins. 

Another life member Noel Gardner 

is also recovering well after an operation 

and Old Boys’ friend and NZ Masters 

player Doug Mutu is also doing well 

after a suspected heart attack. 

And as he always says, “When the 

going gets tough the tough get going”, 

although I think someone wrote a song 

which went something like that Doug? 

Sunday, August 24 saw the Old Boys 

travel to Bishop Park to watch Redcliffe 

take on the Norths Devils in the second 

last home and away game of 2014. 

What was different about this trip 

was that wives and girlfriends were 

more than welcome. 

Saturday, September 27 sees us travel 

to Nanango for the Mardi Gras Cup, 

followed by in October the annual lawn 

bowls challenge against the Wynnum 

Old Boys, who always seem to stack 

their sides. 

This year and in the years to come 

this day will take on a special meaning 

for all Old Boys as we will now be 

playing for a perpetual shield named in 

honour of our past president Ron 

Pascoe. 

This shield has been generously 

donated by Ed Herbener. All names for 

these trips to Ken Manning. 

I would like to conclude by thanking 

a few people, firstly the acting treasurer 

David Isles, who has taken this role on 

under very trying circumstances. 

Rest assured Dave is doing a great 

job and our finances couldn’t be in 

better hands. 

Secondly to our acting secretary 

William Symes, who has come off the 

bench and taken on this very timeconsuming 

job while balancing work 

and personal life commitments. 

Also to our raffle convenor Shane 

Mackay who has battled back from an 

illness and keeps everyone on track, all 

of the committee and lastly to all the life 

members for their continued support 

and the words of wisdom they are 

always unselfishly willing to impart.

TEAMMATES sometimes call him 

“The Street Kid”. 

It’s not meant as a derogatory term for 

Dolphin Misi Pesamino, more a badge of 

honour for this young player. 

Very few players at Intrust Super Cup level 

walk in off the street and ask for a game. That’s 

what Pesamino did at the start of this season. 

With a background in touch football and 

one season at Deception Bay and then North 

Lakes in the Brisbane second division ranks, 

Pesamino had little idea of what awaited him. 

Fast forward seven months and the 

Auckland-born Samoan has beaten out 

Dolphins legend Liam Georgetown for a wing 

spot in the top side. 

Pesamino was handed his initial jersey 

against Central Capras at Rockhampton last 

month, signalling a rapid transit introduction to 

Australia’s second-tier football. 

“It’s crazy. I just can’t believe it,” he said on 

the eve of his debut. “I never played footy 

growing up as I had church, but after I played 

touch a coach urged me to give league a go. 

“I walked in off the street at Dolphin Oval 

after two seasons of playing footy because I 

wanted to learn more. I felt I wasn’t learning 

anything where I was. Now I am learning 

something every game. 

“I’ve never played anywhere else but around 

Brisbane and here I am flying into Rockhampton 

to play a match.” 

A quick learner, ironically one of his main 

teachers this season has been Georgetown, 

the man he disposed. 

“Liam has helped me out all the time,” he 

said. “And now I am taking his spot. He is 

probably angry at me. 

“He was probably the only player I knew 

and that’s just because he went to the same 

school as me but was quite a few years ahead 

of me.” 

The 23-year-old said he played in all 

positions at Deception Bay and North Lakes, 

but stuck his hand up when the Dolphins 

called on wingers. 

“That’s how I became a winger,” he said. 

“They said who was a winger and I threw my 

hand up. 

“After the trials, Grant Flugge told me that I 

had just got into the first competition side, but 

I managed to stay in ever since. 

“I love playing the game and I just want to 

learn more. I want to improve. I truly thank 

God for everything that has happened. It is all 

due to him.” 

Along with his family, Pesamino has a strong 

Christian faith and attends the Scarborough 

Samoan Seventh Day Adventist Church. 

Before joining fellow Samoans Brett Coutts 

and Harley Aiono in the top sides, Pesamino’s 

progress at Redcliffe as a strong and powerful 

flanker has been remarkable, being named in a 

FOGS A grade rep side that played at 

Southport earlier in the season. 

Pesamino also has experienced that curse of 

professional footballers, injury. He spent a 

month off the park with a torn medial knee 

ligament, the first of his career. 

“A down side was that because I couldn’t 

run or do anything for a month, I put on eight 

kilos,” he said. “I’m now 91 kilograms and I was 

84 before I got injured.” 

In a startling similarity to England 

international Jack Reed, who made his way to 

the NRL ranks via Bribie Island, Pesamino 

works for Bradnams Windows and Doors, 

Reed’s former employer.

playing calendar featured gala 

days and carnivals for teams 

aged under 6 to under 10. 

The under 6 teams 

participated in the most gala 

days because of their 

restricted fixture draw. 

Intro-League is the 

modified format that under 6s 

in the Greater Brisbane Junior 

Rugby League. One of the 

modifications is the length of 

their season. 

The gala days have been 

introduced to counter this 

need to assist with consistency 

in the player’s skill-building. 

Zone 1 clubs – the far 

North area of Brisbane – have 

taken turns at hosting these 

gala days across the season. 

Burpengary hosted the final 

day for the under 6 age group 

and put on a great day for all 

our Dolphins teams to 

participate in. 

At the end of the day, the 

Burpengary Jets had 

organised a final presentation 

ceremony for the kids. Several 

special trophies were given 

out to teams. 

The Redcliffe Dolphins 

teams received a special 

trophy for Best Supported 

Teams. 

Having four teams of kids 

participating in these days 

means four teams of parents 

and families too. 

“It was a great idea to hand 

out trophies that recognised 

all of the participants involved 

on the day,” said Darren 

Smallhorne of U6 Turner. 

Parents nominated Zac 

Brown to accept the trophy 

on behalf of the club for his 

great behavior on the day.

This activity is in the form of a three hour mini 

workshop being held one Saturday afternoon per 

month. The Mental Health Social Support (MHSS) 

was developed to assist the community in times of 

need (as would a first aid course) by learning the 

skills offered. The purpose of this workshop is to 

help participants to identify and affectively offer 

support to those at risk of a mental health problem 

and make the referral. 

This workshop is also appropriate for businesses,

Dolphin Oval gains 

a $220,000 upgrade 

FEDERAL Member for Petrie Luke Howarth is pleased to announce the Redcliffe 

District League Football Club will receive $220,000 for an upgrade to Dolphin 

Oval. 

The funding has been approved under the 

Community Development Grants Programme. 

Mr Howarth said the government’s 

commitment to community grants would see 

long-term improvements in social and 

economic infrastructure throughout the Petrie 

electorate. 

“Community grants play an important and 

integral role within the community and I am 

pleased to be able to deliver on my election 

commitment,” Mr Howarth said. 

“This funding will provide the infrastructure 

needed to promote stable, secure and viable 

community activities.” 

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and 

Regional Development Jamie Briggs said the 

funding was another example of the 

Government’s commitment to building 

productive infrastructure for communities 

across Australia. 

“We are getting on with the job of delivering 

$314.2 million towards almost 300 community 

projects across Australia,” he said. 

The Dolphin Oval project will involve 

lighting upgrades, installation of disabled 

toilets and an access ramp, increased and 

improved seating, a new food stall area as well 

as construction of hardstands and services for 

corporate boxes.

Department of Infrastructure and Regional 

Development, which undertakes a value with 

relevant money assessment of each project 

against the programme guidelines to ensure the

New draw format 

forces jackpot up 

THE new format for the members draw has 

resulted in a super jackpot. 

From July 31, there were double the chances 

of taking home the jackpot with a draw now 

also held each Thursday night as well as the 

usual Wednesday evening draw. 

And if the jackpot does not go off, the 

jackpot goes up by $100. And that happens 

each draw night until it is won. 

The jackpot is now heading towards $9000 

after last going off on February 5 to 93-yearold

The draw sees three membership numbers 

chosen each Wednesday and Thursday between 

6pm and 8pm using a random number selector.
