he angel of the
LORD came back
a second time,
touched Elijah, and
said, ‘Get up and eat or
the journey will be too
much for you!’ He got
up, ate, and drank; then
strengthened by that
food, he walked forty
days and forty nights
to the mountain of God,
Horeb.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-
1274) composed the
hymn Sacris Solemnis in
honor of Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament for the first Feast
of Corpus Christi
in 1274. The last
two stanzas make
up the classic
Eucharistic Hymn

St. Augustine: Angel is the
name of their office, not of
their nature. If you seek the
name of their nature, it is
‘spirit’; if you seek the name
of their office, it is ‘angel’:
from what they are, ‘spirit,’
from what they do, ‘angel.’
With their whole beings the
angels are servants and
messengers of God. Because
they ‘always behold the
face of my Father who is in
heaven’ they are the ‘mighty
ones who do his word,
hearkening to the voice of
his word. (CCC 329)
The late Jean Cardinal
Daniélou, S.J. (1905-1974)
wrote a detailed treatment
from the mind of the early
Church, that is to say, the
Fathers, in The Angels & their
Mission. A burst of angelic
activity accompanied Our
Lord Jesus Christ’s brief time
on earth. Angels often preface
every encounter with mortals
with the words, Fear not!
Here you will not encounter
the chubby cherubs perched
for precious moments or the
itinerant do-gooders on our
anonymous city streets; no,
their aspect is fearsome, their
power awesome and their
missions unfathomable to
our sentimentalized religious
tastes.
Angels bring God to
man and Heaven to earth.
Various biblical witnesses
establish this truth: Human
beings ate the bread of
angels; He sent them all the
food they could eat. (Ps 78:
25) Your ancestors ate the
manna in the desert, but
they died; this is the bread
that comes down from
heaven so that one may
eat it and not die. I am the
living bread that came down
from heaven; whoever eats
this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is My flesh for the life of the
world. (Jn 6:49-51)

XVI used the occasion to offer
the example of angels to six
men about to be consecrated
bishops:
Sacred Scripture and the
Church’s tradition enable us
to discern two aspects. On
the one hand, the Angel is a
creature who stands before
God, oriented to God with his
whole being. All three names
of the Archangels end with
the word ‘El’, which means
‘God’. God is inscribed in
their names, in their nature.
Their true nature is existing
in His sight and for Him. In
this very way the second
aspect that characterizes
Angels is also explained:
they are God’s messengers.
They bring God to men, they
open heaven and thus open
earth. Precisely because
they are with God, they can
also be very close to man.
Indeed, God is closer to each
one of us than we ourselves
are. The Angels speak to
man of what constitutes his
true being, of what in his
life is so often concealed
and buried. They bring him
back to himself, touching
him on God’s behalf. In this
sense, we human beings
must also always return to
being angels to one another
- angels who turn people
away from erroneous ways
and direct them always, ever
anew, to God.

of our hands, the sacrifices
we make and sufferings we
endure into the hands of a
holy Angel so that he may
bring us God, the Word made
Flesh, the Body and Blood
of Jesus Christ, the Bread
of Angels—on our altar. It
is more than the mind can
fathom; only faith can receive
such a Gift.

At St. Thomas More Parish
As the great mosaic of St. Peregrine’s
miraculous healing from cancer
nears completion in Guadalajara,
Mexico, we broke ground, poured
the foundations and raised the walls
on the Shrine here at on the campus
of St. Thomas More Parish. Father
Julian Harris and Father Alex Vargas
blessed the workers and the work
as staff assisted with prayers for the
benefactors who honor the survivors
and victims of cancer and those who
cared for them. Prayerfully consider
remembering your loved ones or
yourselves with a plaque at the St.
Peregrine Shrine. God be praised in
His Angels and in His Saints.

OUR CHILDREN AND

As parents, godparents
and priests we have no
higher duty before God

passing on to our children the
Catholic Faith, our Catholic
Faith—it is the gift of their
salvation in Christ Jesus. The

us to be the first evangelists of
our children:

Faith responds to
God’s offer of forgiveness,
strength and peace in the
Eucharist. How can our
children recognize or answer
that which they do not know
or hear. Wisdom is the right
use of knowledge. Intelligence
is the capacity to know and
understand; wisdom is the
ability to use that knowledge
rightly. Righteousness, like
wisdom, is the right use of the
knowledge of God: Brothers,
my heart’s desire and prayer
to God for them is that they
may be saved. For I bear
them witness that they
have a zeal for God, but not
according to knowledge.
For, being ignorant of the
righteousness of God, and
seeking to establish their
own, they did not submit
to God’s righteousness.
(Rom 10:1-3) Enthusiasm,
sentimentality, nostalgia,
family custom, emotionalism—
none of these is a substitute
for the knowledge of God that
comes through instruction
in the Catholic Faith. Our
children are drowning in
a society that is hostile to
God and besotted in its own
self-serving sense of what is
right and what is wrong. Our
society is not Christian, it is
secular. Society’s catalogue
of virtues is politically correct
before men; it is not righteous
before God.
I appeal to you, in the
Name of Christ, to honor the
oaths you have sworn before
God and teach your children
in the ways of our Catholic
Faith: And these words that
I command you today shall
be on your heart. You shall
teach them diligently to your
children, and shall talk of
them when you sit in your
house, and when you walk
by the way, and when you
lie down, and when you rise.
You shall bind them as a
sign on your hand, and they
shall be as frontlets between
your eyes. (Deut 6:6-8) And
again the great Proverb of God:
Train up a child in the way
he should go; even when he is
old he will not depart from it.
(22:6)
We open the gates of
Heaven to our children when
we teach them the Faith. Jesus
Christ says: I am the way, and
the truth, and the life. No one
comes to the Father except
through Me. (Jn 14:6) What
victory can we claim if we get
to Heaven and have left our
children behind on the side of
the road begging in the dust?
Let our first responsibility be
to save our children by giving
them the knowledge of Jesus
Christ and the example of
living the Christian life.
Our Faith Formation
Program at St. Thomas More
Parish needs catechists and
assistants—people who love
Christ, have the knowledge
of God and the integrity to
live in that knowledge—to
instruct our children in the
Catholic Faith. The older
grades—6, 7, 8 & 9—present
the greatest challenge and
offer the greatest good,
because these kids are in
the greatest need of the
knowledge of God. They
are exposed to every kind of
temptation and falsehood our
society can throw at them
on the television, through
the internet, at school and at
the mall. You do not need to
seek God’s will about this—it
is God’s will. Your task is to
offer yourself in loving service
of God’s children and to help
teach the next generation of
Catholics. It will be said of
you, one day, by The LORD
Himself: They tended them
with blameless heart, with
discerning minds they led
them. (Psalm 78)
We need your
help; we cannot do this
alone. The Church and our
Faith Formation Program
is no substitute for the
daily example of parents,
godparents and godly men
and women who take an
active role in the spiritual
welfare of children and
young people. We are here
to reinforce and deepen the
home-instruction with one
hour of religion class each
week. Please call the Parish
Office and volunteer. I look
forward to hearing from
people of good will who will
serve as catechists and their
assistants at St. Thomas More
during the Year of Faith 2012-
2013.

Cũng giống như mọi giáo xứ khác về những việc phải
làm nhằm chuẩn bị bí tích rửa tội cho con cái. Giáo xứ
St. Thomas More yêu cầu những việc sau đây.
1) Cha Mẹ hay gia đình phải là thành viên của giáo xứ
qua việc ghi danh, tham dự phụng vụ tại giáo xứ và
đóng góp qua hình thức phong bì. Sáu tháng là thời
gian để trở nên thành viên của giáo xứ.
2) Điền đơn để xin cho con mình được lãnh nhận bí
tích rửa tội, tại văn phòng hay trước thánh lễ 4:30
PM Chúa Nhật tại anh Nguyễn Văn Tân.
3) Cha Mẹ và người đở đầu phải dự lớp chuẩn bị rửa
tội do giáo xứ hoặc cha phụ trách hướng dẫn tùy
ngôn ngữ mà anh chị em chọn.
4) Người đở đầu phải được xác nhận là thành viên của
một giáo xứ và có thể đở đầu do cha sở của giáo xứ
đó xác nhận.
5) $50 tiền dâng cúng cho giáo xứ (chứ không phải
cho linh mục làm nghi thức rửa tội).
