Dear Friends: You know this 

day is different for me than 

the preceding ones: I am no 

longer the Supreme Pontiff of 

the Catholic Church, or I will 

be until 8 o’clock this evening 

and then no more. 

I am simply a pilgrim 

beginning the last leg of his 

pilgrimage on this Earth. 

But I would still ... with 

my heart, with my love, 

with my prayers, with my 

reflection, and with all my 

inner strength, like to work 

for the common good and 

the good of the church and 

of humanity. I feel very 

supported by your sympathy. 

Let us go forward with 

the Lord for the good of 

the church and the world. 

Thank you, and goodnight. 

Thank you to all of you. 

With these few but moving 

words His Holiness 

Benedict Pope Emeritus 

withdrew into prayer to follow 

the Lord in secret: But when 

you pray, go into your room 

and shut the door and pray 

to your Father Who is in 

secret. And your Father Who 

sees in secret will reward you. 

(Matt 6:6) Our Holy Father 

does not seek to escape from 

the world or …the terror of 

the night, nor the arrow that 

flies by day (Psalm 91:5). No, 

he offers himself up to a more 

intimate union with Christ the 

Redeemer, the Reconciler, the 

Intercessor, as God would have 

it, to fulfill his divine destiny 

prepared for him from the 

foundation of the world: I do 

not ask that You take them 

out of the world, but that You 

keep them from the evil one 

(Jn 17:15); Peace be with you. 

As the Father has sent Me, 

even so I am sending you. (Jn 

21:21): 

[H]e, who assumes the 

Petrine ministry no longer 

has any privacy. He 

belongs always and totally 

to everyone, to the whole 

Church. His life is, so to 

speak, totally deprived 

of the private sphere. I 

have felt, and I feel even in 

this very moment, that one 

receives one’s life precisely 

when he offers it as a gift. 

I said before that many 

people who love the Lord 

also love the Successor of 

Saint Peter and are fond 

of him, that the Pope has 

truly brothers and sisters, 

sons and daughters all over 

the world, and that he feels 

safe in the embrace of their 

communion, because he no 

longer belongs to himself, 

but he belongs to all and all 

are truly his own. 

The ‘always’ is also a 

‘forever’ - there is no 

returning to private life. My 

decision to forgo the exercise 

of active ministry does not 

revoke this. I do not return 

to private life, to a life of 

travel, meetings, receptions, 

conferences and so on. I do 

not abandon the cross, but 

remain in a new way near 

to the Crucified Lord. I no 

longer wield the power of 

the office for the government 

of the Church, but in the 

service of prayer I remain, 

so to speak, within St. 

Peter’s bounds. St. Benedict, 

whose name I bear as Pope, 

shall be a great example in

At this moment my spirit

years of Petrine ministry

regarding the faith in the 

Lord Jesus Christ, and the 

charity that circulates in 

the body of the Church

Church to live in love – 

and of the hope that opens 

for us the way towards the 

fullness of life, and directs 

us towards the heavenly 

homeland. 

is given to the intellect 

when the affections pass 

entirely into God through 

elevation. It is the place 

beyond the pull and push 

of sin and grace, beyond 

the intellect and reason and 

only reached through the 

way of suffering to the soul’s 

pure union with God, that 

seventh and final abode as 

described by the Carmelite 

mystic and Doctor of the 

Church, St. Teresa of Avila. 

It is to this place that Our 

Holy Father journeys now. 

We too are spiritual 

pilgrims, and gathered together 

on the common journey to 

union with God in Heaven, we 

are the pilgrim people of God 

and the Pilgrim Church. We 

take great comfort in knowing 

that our Holy Father Benedict 

will continue to accompany 

us on our pilgrimage with his 

prayers. 

With these words, His 

Holiness concluded his public 

farewell and chose the path 

not travelled in over 600 years, 

that path immortalized by the 

American Poet Laureate Robert 

Frost: 

I shall be telling this 

with a sigh Somewhere 

ages and ages hence: Two 

roads diverged in a wood, 

and I, I took the one less 

traveled by, And that has 

made all the difference.

St. Peregrine Garden 

A Letter from 

one of our Parishioners 

Fr. Vargas, 

Our cousin's brother-in-law was diagnosed with 

bladder cancer 8 years ago. He underwent treatment 

and was in remission until recently when he was told 

that not only had his bladder cancer returned but that 

it was in his liver, stomach and possibly neck & chest 

areas as well. The doctors told him he is terminal and 

could resume chemo or do nothing as they doubted 

they could get him into remission again. He opted to 

resume the chemo .

Our family began praying for him, and told him about 

the special St. Peregrine Mass in January. We also lit 

a candle for him at the St. Peregrine Garden. He did 

come up from Pompano Beach to attend the Mass 

indoors. He very much enjoyed the mass. Two weeks 

later when he went for more tests, he ws told that he 

was in total remission! 

He is very thankful and grateful to St. Peregrine for 

answered prayers, as are we. We are also thankful for 

our great priests and all that they do for our wonderful 

St. Thomas More Church.

Activities for children during Lent 

There are many things that children can do during lent (pray, fast, volunteer). 

1. The "Jelly Bean Prayer" for children is a sweet way of teaching 

children all about what Lent really means. Using various colors of 

jelly beans to describe a virtue, children are given a jelly bean for 

each good deed collecting them up until Easter. 

Red for the blood of Christ (a sacrifice) 

Green for the shade of the palm (doing a good deed). 

Yellow for God's light (kindness to others). 

Orange for prayers at twilight 

(good behavior at bed time prayers). 

Purple for days of sorrow (apologizing to someone). 

Pink for each new tomorrow (forgiving others). 

Starting on Ash Wednesday, begin rewarding your child(ren) with 

a jelly bean of the appropriate color each time they do something 

that corresponds with an act. On Easter, allow them tvo receive all 

the jelly beans they have collected.Credit. 

2. Children should be encouraged to pray during Lent. One simple 

prayer that we are adding to our morning routine this year is 

called, "My Morning Offering". 

God, our Father, I offer you today 

all I think and do and say. 

I offer it with what was done on 

earth by Jesus Christ, your son. 

3. Almsgiving is tied closely to fasting. Whatever we "give up", 

the money we save will go to the needy. It is also considered that 

almsgiving is to give one's time and goods to those who are in need 

(I could use some help here - how can my three children 9, 7, 5 

volunteer locally, any ideas are welcomed). Now that my three children 

are a little older and more understanding we will introduce 

and focus more on almsgiving during the Lenten season 

PREPARING 

FOR LENT: 

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday 

are days of fast and abstinence. 

Fridays of Lent are also days of 

abstinence. 

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 

years of age through age 59. On a 

fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two 

other meals, sufficient to maintain 

strength, may be taken according 

to each one’s needs, but together 

they should not equal another full 

meal. Eating between meals is not 

permitted, but liquids, including milk 

and juices, are allowed. 

Abstinence is observed by all 14 

years of age and older. On days of 

abstinence no meat is allowed. Note 

that when health or ability to work 

would be seriously affected, the law 

does not oblige. When in doubt 

concerning fast and abstinence, the 

parish priest should be consulted. 

Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer are 

the three disciplines of Lent. The 

faithful and catechumens should 

undertake these practices seriously 

in a spirit of penance, and of 

preparation for baptism or of 

renewal of baptism at Easter.

The Thai-Psalms Project 

Im pleased to announce that 

The Thai-Psalm has come to 

fruition. In only the last 40 years, 

the seed of almost two centuries 

of Christianity in Thailand has 

begun to take root. 

While Christianity in the West 

has enjoyed the Scriptures set to 

Western music, this tender shoot 

of Christianity in the Orient has 

been in want of the Scriptures set 

to their own music; music which 

Thai Christians may claim as their 

own. 

The Thai-Psalms Project's mission 

was to create a culturally-rich and 

musically-meaningful setting for 

the psalms, hymns, and spiritual 

songs of Scripture, in the musiclanguage 

of the Thai people....in 

order that the Church in Thailand 

may have the words of Christ 

indwell them richly (cf. Eph. 

5:18-19). 

Christian faith, and to encourage 

the appreciation and promulgation 

of Thai music within the 

Church in Thailand. 

In 2012, for the first time in the 

Kingdom of Thailand's history, 

the Psalms have been set to Thai 

classical music, and intoned according 

to the Thai King James 

Version of the Bible. 

Recorded at the Bunditpatanasilpa 

Institute, College of Dramatic 

Arts, Fine Arts Department- 

Thailand's official school for Thai 

cultural arts, the Duriya Tasana 

court musicians performed masterfully, 

producing compositions 

of excellent quality. Employing 

uniquely Thai modes of vocal 

inflections, quavers, and intonations, 

the expressive qualities of 

each Psalm's musical arrangement 

was tailored to match the words 

in tone, pace, and feeling. 

Listeners will be made conscious 

of the history, beauty, and unique 

musical heritage of the people of 

Thailand while providing opportunities 

for the young Church to 

develop an understanding of the 

Thais may now meditate on 

Scripture which has been praised, 

prayed, and effused with the exhortation 

and evocation of enduring 

truths, in a musical mode of 

expression distinctly their own.
