Harris Dear Friends: You know this day is different for me than the preceding ones: I am no longer the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, or I will be until 8 o’clock this evening and then no more. I am simply a pilgrim beginning the last leg of his pilgrimage on this Earth. But I would still ... with my heart, with my love, with my prayers, with my reflection, and with all my inner strength, like to work for the common good and the good of the church and of humanity. I feel very supported by your sympathy. Let us go forward with the Lord for the good of the church and the world. Thank you, and goodnight. Thank you to all of you. With these few but moving words His Holiness Benedict Pope Emeritus withdrew into prayer to follow the Lord in secret: But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father Who is in secret. And your Father Who sees in secret will reward you. (Matt 6:6) Our Holy Father does not seek to escape from the world or …the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day (Psalm 91:5). No, he offers himself up to a more intimate union with Christ the Redeemer, the Reconciler, the Intercessor, as God would have it, to fulfill his divine destiny prepared for him from the foundation of the world: I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one (Jn 17:15); Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, even so I am sending you. (Jn 21:21): [H]e, who assumes the Petrine ministry no longer has any privacy. He belongs always and totally to everyone, to the whole Church. His life is, so to speak, totally deprived of the private sphere. I have felt, and I feel even in this very moment, that one receives one’s life precisely when he offers it as a gift. I said before that many people who love the Lord also love the Successor of Saint Peter and are fond of him, that the Pope has truly brothers and sisters, sons and daughters all over the world, and that he feels safe in the embrace of their communion, because he no longer belongs to himself, but he belongs to all and all are truly his own. The ‘always’ is also a ‘forever’ - there is no returning to private life. My decision to forgo the exercise of active ministry does not revoke this. I do not return to private life, to a life of travel, meetings, receptions, conferences and so on. I do not abandon the cross, but remain in a new way near to the Crucified Lord. I no longer wield the power of the office for the government of the Church, but in the service of prayer I remain, so to speak, within St. Peter’s bounds.
