The Thai-Psalms Project
Im pleased to announce that
The Thai-Psalm has come to
fruition. In only the last 40 years,
the seed of almost two centuries
of Christianity in Thailand has
begun to take root.
While Christianity in the West
has enjoyed the Scriptures set to
Western music, this tender shoot
of Christianity in the Orient has
been in want of the Scriptures set
to their own music; music which
Thai Christians may claim as their
own.
The Thai-Psalms Project's mission
was to create a culturally-rich and
musically-meaningful setting for
the psalms, hymns, and spiritual
songs of Scripture, in the musiclanguage
of the Thai people....in
order that the Church in Thailand
may have the words of Christ
indwell them richly (cf. Eph.
5:18-19).
Christian faith, and to encourage
the appreciation and promulgation
of Thai music within the
Church in Thailand.
In 2012, for the first time in the
Kingdom of Thailand's history,
the Psalms have been set to Thai
classical music, and intoned according
to the Thai King James
Version of the Bible.
Recorded at the Bunditpatanasilpa
Institute, College of Dramatic
Arts, Fine Arts Department-
Thailand's official school for Thai
cultural arts, the Duriya Tasana
court musicians performed masterfully,
producing compositions
of excellent quality. Employing
uniquely Thai modes of vocal
inflections, quavers, and intonations,
the expressive qualities of
each Psalm's musical arrangement
was tailored to match the words
in tone, pace, and feeling.
Listeners will be made conscious
of the history, beauty, and unique
musical heritage of the people of
Thailand while providing opportunities
for the young Church to
develop an understanding of the
Thais may now meditate on
Scripture which has been praised,
prayed, and effused with the exhortation
and evocation of enduring
truths, in a musical mode of
expression distinctly their own.
