September 5, 2010 FROM PASTOR HARRIS Page 3
THE BIBLE SPEAKS BY PASTOR HARRIS
Discipleship does not come
at a discount. There
are no sales. Jesus wants us to know
up front just how demanding and costly a thing discipleship really is. But His words give us sticker-shock: If
anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and
sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come
after me cannot be My disciple. (Lk 14:26-27)
The word hate is clearly being used in an exaggerated sense and not literally. The phrase love me more
is more palatable, but does nothing to capture the sense of total commitment that the underlying Greek is saying.
These are hard sayings for us who are also trying to honor commitments we have also made to spouses,
children, parents and bankers. We are in no position to literally follow the itinerant Jesus, who, as far as we
know, had no property of His own, no home, no wife, no children, and no job.
This saying is also hard because we live in a culture and climate when we are bombarded with goods
and promises for wonderful benefits with no mention of and much less any expectation of paying a cost for
them. We are spending and living as though there is no cost, no downside, no long-term consequences and no
tomorrow. The truth is that if we keep this insanity going, there won't be a tomorrow for any of us.
Jesus' words ought to draw us up short. Let’s reflect within ourselves on how much the choices we
have already made are costing us and consider whether the costs of following Jesus might be a better investment.
Indeed, the examples Jesus gives seem to invite this sort of sober, practical assessment. Before we enter
into discipleship of Christ, we must count the costs. Do not believe all of those popular preachers who tell you
that the Devil is a defeated foe sitting in the corner sucking Maalox and begging, Don't hurt me! No, he is a
roaring lion with you on the menu: Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like
a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Pet 5:8)
Some of us may remember the words of General Dwight D. Eisenhower when he addressed the troops
on the eve of D-Day and the landings at the beaches of Normandy: There will be no victories at bargain basement
prices. There never are in war. With the terrible costs of the Battle of Iwo Jima still searing his skin,
Major General Graves B. Erskine wrote: Victory was never in doubt. Its cost was...What was in doubt, in all
our minds, was whether there would be any of us left to dedicate our cemetery at the end, or whether the
THE BIBLE SPEAKS CONTINUED:
last Marine would die knocking out the last Japanese gun and gunner. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur,
It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it.
If you are looking for a cheap ticket to glory, you are not going to find it with Jesus. The life of His
disciple is a life of suffering and difficulty. If you come expecting a free trip along easy street, you will soon go
away disappointed. Thomas à Kempis in his Imitation of Christ writes: Many come following Jesus who love
his heavenly kingdom but few come looking forward to suffering. Many admire His miracles but few follow Him
in humiliation to the cross.
It's a dangerous place out there when you go out your door and follow Jesus. The Enchanted Forest is
filled with lions and tigers and bears (O, My!). Our Lord never hid this from us; indeed, He told it every way He
could so that we might understand the cost of following the Word planted in our hearts: When anyone hears
the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been
sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one
who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while,
and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was
sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of
riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears
the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and
in another thirty. (Matt 13:19-23)
To bear fruit the disciple must knowingly, willingly be able to give up everything for the love of God. No
disciple is greater than his Master Jesus Christ. (Matt 10:24) There is no following Him save along the Road of
Suffering, and there is no detour around Calvary to get to Heaven. One old preacher put it this way: No Cross,
No Crown!
Discipleship is a demanding thing. The blood of the martyrs waters the seed of the Church. The history
of the church of Jesus Christ runs red with the blood of those disciples who sacrificed their all for their commitment
to Jesus. Their lives testify to just how demanding is this discipleship. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Lutheran
confessing church pastor and a leader in the resistance movement against the Third Reich, wrote from a Nazi
prison just before he went to the gallows for following Jesus, When Christ calls a man, He bids him, 'Come and
die!'
There are no discount days in discipleship. Every single day is demanding. On the one hand Jesus
makes it very difficult to be His disciple. It will cost us everything and we need to know the cost before jumping
in. We must know in our hearts that it's worth the cost. On the other hand, Jesus may be making it impossible
to be His disciple on our own abilities? When we confess, I can't, then we are open for Jesus', I can. AMEN.
Diocesan Services
Appeal 2010
Through Bishop Gerald Barbarito’s Annual Appeal we share
in the work of Christ through our pledge of financial support
to the Diocesan Services Appeal 2010. As one of the largest,
most active communities St. Thomas More Parish’s portion is
also great: $383,500.00
Pledges and Cash received as of July 23: $232,893.31
This amount is beyond the capacity of any one person; but every
single person and every parish must do something. That
includes me and you and all who worship at St. Thomas More.
We Gather in Faith, We share God’s Blessings. In this we are
confident that God will continue to bless us as a parish and as
hard-working families.
Some of you have already turned in your completed pledge
envelopes. If you have not already done so, please mail your
envelope or drop it by the Parish Office or mail it directly to
the Diocese of Palm Beach. Whatever your method, please
be a partner in this campaign and be sure to note that you
are a parishioner at St. Thomas More Parish so that we might
receive credit for your gift towards meeting our parish goal.
Respect Life & Migrants
Diocesan Collection
The annual collection in support of Respect Life and
Migrants is scheduled for the weekend of September 12 and
13.
Our very active Respect Life Ministry within the five
county Diocese of Palm Beach serves to educate and encourage
among our faithful and beyond an authentic love and reverence
for all humankind from the moment of conception to
natural death. This ministry serves the community by means
of outreach to women in crisis pregnancy, with an active healing
ministry for women and men suffering the profound effects
of an abortion, awareness and witness to foster dignity
for our sick and aged, and with ongoing education on the topic
of various bioethics in conjunction with the Florida Catholic
Conference. Your support toward this collection enables the
critical work of the Church locally in establishing a culture of
life in families, parishes, schools and in the public square.
The second portion of this collection is dedicated to
support Migrant communities in our Diocese where there too
exists a need for critical outreach in our vast territory. Hard
working families who are struggling to survive in these challenging
economic times will be supported by your financial
support which will directly provide relief for the poor and
needy migrant parishes, workers and families in areas like
Belle Glade, Pahokee and Indiantown where the need remains
great.
Last year this collection generated $96,395. Your continued
support of this upcoming collection makes a way for
our brothers and sisters to experience the profound love of
Christ which sets man free in knowledge, love and service of
Him.
With gratitude for your continued generosity, and
with assurance of my prayers for you, I am
Sincerely yours in Christ,
