Stopfordian 2010–2011 - Stockport Grammar School

The Stopfordian 2010–2011
cancellation of a number of fixtures and making the season
seem a very short one. We will never be able to control the
weather and although our hard working Grounds’ Staff
ensures that the surfaces are in immaculate playing
condition even they can do nothing to prevent the frost or the
snow which were symptomatic of the weather this year. On
behalf of the girls and myself may I thank them for their
continued hard work and dedication. I also thank Nigel
Stanhope for his continued support in coaching at SGS, Mrs
Lockwood and Mrs Jones for their hard work with the Junior
sides and look forward to an equally enjoyable and successful
season next year.

Hockey Representative Honours 2010-2011
Martha Watson and Lily Harrison played in the Hi-Pac
Territorial Tournament from which the England Under 17
squad is selected.
Lara Knowles attended an England Under 16 trial and has
been selected to represent Cheshire.

1ST XI HOCKEY
After seven years of playing school hockey this season has
without doubt been the best. We lost the first game but, after
finding our feet, we went from strength to strength, winning
matches consecutively. With strength in the midfield from Lily
Harrison and a strong defence in Emma Woodhead, Angharad
Smith and Charlotte Bailey we were set for the first round of
the National Tournament. We excelled ourselves throughout
the tournament and got through to the next round as winners.
The second round proved to be more taxing as we lost to
Arnold but beat Sedbergh therefore putting us up against
King’s Chester to whom we unfortunately lost.
We did not let the disappointment get us down and we
continued to dominate in our local Saturday fixtures, with
winning performances from Verity Lukes-Mooney and
Amanda Bennison linking the defence to the attack and
therefore creating opportunities for numerous goals.
