24 Recognition and Awards 2011 Florida Municipal Achievement Award Winners Please congratulate the winners of the 2011 Florida Municipal Achievement Awards program. Official recognition of the winners will take place during Saturday’s Second General Session. City Spirit Award City of Brooksville: Operation Backpack Operation Backpack was launched by the City of Brooksville and Friends of the Children to provide free backpacks filled with school supplies to the underprivileged children of its community. Businesses, churches, organizations and individuals make monetary donations toward purchasing the backpacks and school supplies. The program is held just prior to the start of each school year. The Operation Backpack program has distributed 4,379 backpacks, including school supplies, since 2004. The success of this program is the result of Brooksville’s continued commitment to the community by closely collaborating with its residents, local community-based organizations and governmental agencies. Environmental Stewardship Award City of Cooper City: You Win – We All Win Water Conservation Program Cooper City set a goal to reduce overall water use by five percent in three years by implementing an innovative water conservation program. The program was divided into several major components including retrofitting older buildings; a competition among homeowner associations; outreach to highest users; rebates and community education. To date, the results have exceeded expectations. Families saved more than 176,000 gallons of water during a three-month competition, the highest users are implementing changes and more! Florida Citizenship Award City of Delray Beach: Connecting with Our Schools – Civics Education in Delray Beach Program In this program, Delray Beach offers civics educational programs for all ages, from students to retirees. The city developed four civics outreach initiatives that offer interactive programs and activities to promote a stronger knowledge of local government. Included in this effort is the Residents Academy, a bi-annual course that has educated more than 450 attendees; High School Student Residents Academy, educating high school students about local government functions; Carver Middle School Mock Election/Commission Meeting, a practical learning experience about campaigning, voting and the decision-making processes; and Palm Beach County Teacher Training Day, a program to educate teachers who then teach students the importance of government.
25 2011 Defender of Home Rule Defender of Home Rule recipients are legislators who consistently voted and advocated on behalf of Home Rule and helped push the Florida League of Cities’ legislative agenda during the 2011 legislative session. Eduardo “Eddy” Gonzalez, Representative, District 102, Hialeah Gardens Seth McKeel, Representative, District 63, Lakeland Home Rule Heroes Home Rule Heroes are local elected officials who went above and beyond the call of duty during the course of the 2011 legislative session by being a constant and meaningful presence in Tallahassee advocating on behalf of the League’s legislative agenda. Ortis, Mayor, City of Pembroke Pines Georgia Phillips, Deputy Mayor, City of Rockledge Kathy Till, Commissioner, City of Apopka Legislative Appreciation Awards The Florida League of Cities presented Legislative Appreciation Awards to a selected group of legislators for their efforts on behalf of cities and their commitment to Home Rule during the 2011 legislative session.
