<br />
Kuch<strong>in</strong>g, the capital of the Malaysian State of Sarawak, is located<br />
on the Isl<strong>and</strong> of Borneo <strong>in</strong> the South Ch<strong>in</strong>a Sea. The city is situated<br />
along both sides of Sungai Sarawak (Sarawak River), some 40 km<br />
<br />
of unstable peat swamp <strong>and</strong> soft clay. The city of Kuch<strong>in</strong>g is currently<br />
lack<strong>in</strong>g a wastewater treatment plant, <strong>and</strong> the local subsurface<br />
conditions make a conventional centralised wastewater system<br />
expensive to implement. Most build<strong>in</strong>gs (residential, <strong>in</strong>stitutional,<br />
commercial, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial) <strong>in</strong> Kuch<strong>in</strong>g are equipped with two separate<br />
wastewater outlets, one outlet for blackwater (toilet wastewater) <strong>and</strong><br />
one or more for greywater (wash<strong>in</strong>g, bath<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> kitchen), although<br />
<br />
tanks, either with<strong>in</strong> the hous<strong>in</strong>g plot or at communal level serv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
commercial build<strong>in</strong>gs or residential complexes.<br />
<br />
the stormwater dra<strong>in</strong>s from where they are conveyed <strong>in</strong>to the nearest<br />
aquatic system. <strong>Greywater</strong> is also discharged <strong>in</strong>to the stormwater<br />
network or directly <strong>in</strong>to receiv<strong>in</strong>g waters. Some oil <strong>and</strong> grease traps<br />
have been <strong>in</strong>stalled at large food outlets at the request of Kuch<strong>in</strong>g<br />
North City Hall (DBKU) <strong>and</strong> Kuch<strong>in</strong>g City South Council (MBKS).<br />
These facilities are, however, generally undersized <strong>and</strong> often only<br />
emptied irregularly.<br />
The demonstration project described herewith is based on source<br />
separation of blackwater <strong>and</strong> greywater from n<strong>in</strong>e residential terraced<br />
<br />
Kuch<strong>in</strong>g. The treatment facility is located <strong>in</strong> the adjacent park <strong>and</strong><br />
operated s<strong>in</strong>ce December 2003.<br />
