Academic Requirements and Policies<br />

Lab Science Requirement<br />

Each undergraduate student must successfully complete a<br />

laboratory science course <strong>of</strong> 3(or more) credits in order to complete<br />

their program <strong>of</strong> study at the <strong>Institute</strong>. This laboratory science<br />

course must be taken in addition to the natural sciences course<br />

required by the <strong>SUNY</strong> General Education policy.<br />

Foreign Language Requirement<br />

Credit for the <strong>SUNY</strong>IT General Education Foreign Language<br />

Requirement may be issued to students who have done<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

1. Satisfactorily completed a one-semester FL course at<br />

<strong>SUNY</strong>IT;<br />

2. Satisfactorily completed and transferred a college-level FL course<br />

from another institution (upon receipt <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript);<br />

3. Earned a score <strong>of</strong> 3 or higher on FL AP exam (upon receipt <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial transcript);<br />

4. Earned a satisfactory score on an approved FL test via the<br />

normal Test-Out Policy.<br />

The <strong>SUNY</strong>IT General Education Foreign Language Requirement<br />

may be waived for students who have done one <strong>of</strong><br />

the following:<br />

1. Earned a score <strong>of</strong> 85 or higher on a NYS FL Regents exam<br />

(upon receipt <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial high school transcript);<br />

2. Received a diploma or degree from a secondary or higher educational<br />

institution in which the language <strong>of</strong> instruction was<br />

other than English;<br />

3. Documented successful completion <strong>of</strong> four years <strong>of</strong> schooling<br />

in an educational institution where the language <strong>of</strong> instruction<br />

was other than English;<br />

4. Earned a passing grade on the NYU Foreign Language Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

test;<br />

5. Earned a score <strong>of</strong> 530+ on SAT II in a foreign language;<br />

6. Received a minimum <strong>of</strong> a “B” grade or 85 in fourth year <strong>of</strong> a<br />

foreign language;<br />

7. Earned a satisfactory score on a Native American Language<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency exam (pending identification <strong>of</strong> appropriate testing<br />

instruments and scores).<br />

Writing Requirement<br />

Based upon the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the President’s Blue<br />

Ribbon Panel on Basic Skills (1984), <strong>SUNY</strong>IT adopted the<br />

following writing requirement:<br />

Each student must successfully complete ENG 101, “English<br />

Composition” and at least ONE upper division writing course<br />

(e.g., COM 240, COM 306, COM 307, COM 308, COM 311, COM<br />

350, COM 353, COM 400) to ensure a pr<strong>of</strong>essional level <strong>of</strong> writing<br />

competency.<br />

<strong>SUNY</strong>IT also established the Writing Faculty Committee<br />

to oversee the implementation <strong>of</strong> this requirement and to create<br />

an appropriate test-out procedure for those students interested<br />

in challenging the required writing courses for credit. Each<br />

semester the current registration booklet identifies the courses<br />

that meet the writing requirement and provides the procedure<br />

for challenging a course through the test-out.<br />

Enhanced General Education Core<br />

<strong>SUNY</strong>IT <strong>of</strong>fers freshmen the opportunity to complete a<br />

significant portion <strong>of</strong> the general education requirements via<br />

a core sequence <strong>of</strong> coursework that integrates four general<br />

education requirements into three courses. The three courses<br />

are IDS 201, “Perspectives on Knowledge,” IDS 102, “Art and<br />

Culture,” and IDS 103, “Science, <strong>Technology</strong>, and Human Values.”<br />

Students who complete all three core courses will have<br />

satisfied four general education areas: Western Civilization, Other<br />

World Civilizations, Humanities, and Fine Arts. The three core<br />

courses do not need to be taken in sequence, and students who<br />

complete only one or two <strong>of</strong> the core courses should meet with<br />

a general education advisor to determine the general education<br />

credit they have earned.<br />

An <strong>of</strong>ficial copy <strong>of</strong> a transcript (and approved translation if<br />

in a language other than English) demonstrating eligibility for<br />

this waiver must be submitted to the chairperson along with<br />

a completed petition requesting the waiver. Students will not<br />

receive any academic credit for this waiver and there will be<br />

no reduction in the student’s <strong>SUNY</strong> General Education credit<br />

requirements for graduation.<br />
