General Information<br />
Library<br />
Named after <strong>SUNY</strong>IT’s third president, the Peter J. Cayan<br />
Library is open seven days a week so that <strong>SUNY</strong>IT community<br />
members can take advantage <strong>of</strong> the many library services when<br />
they most need them. The library includes 10 group study and<br />
collaboration spaces and two computer lab areas for students<br />
to use to complete their academic projects. The library staff is<br />
available anytime to assist students in finding the appropriate<br />
resources, whether that be an article from one <strong>of</strong> the numerous<br />
electronic databases, a book from our extensive on-campus<br />
collection, or material from another library via inter-library<br />
loan. On and <strong>of</strong>f campus students can also avail themselves<br />
<strong>of</strong> the library services remotely, including access to a reference<br />
librarian 24 hours a day, by using their <strong>SUNY</strong>IT network ID<br />
from any Internet connected browser.<br />
Computing and Media Services<br />
The use <strong>of</strong> computers is widely integrated into almost all<br />
facets <strong>of</strong> life at <strong>SUNY</strong>IT. Every student receives a <strong>SUNY</strong>IT<br />
computer account for access to computer and network resources<br />
and an email account for college communications. All <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />
electronic communications between students, faculty and campus<br />
<strong>of</strong>fices are conducted through the campus email system.<br />
Students, faculty, and staff can get assistance with the various<br />
computing and media services around campus by coming to,<br />
calling, or submitting a help ticket to the help desk located in<br />
the Cayan Library. Community members can use <strong>SUNY</strong>IT’s<br />
computer labs as well as the wireless and wired network to<br />
access various specialized s<strong>of</strong>tware applications. Virus protection<br />
and other s<strong>of</strong>tware are available to students at no or low<br />
costs. Information pertaining to computing resources and<br />
s<strong>of</strong>tware downloads is available at http://www.sunyit.edu/its.<br />
All classrooms are equipped with multi-media technology<br />
to provide the opportunity for an interactive learning experience,<br />
and one dedicated classroom includes video and audio<br />
conferencing capabilities, enabling speakers and experiences<br />
from across the globe to share in the classroom experience.<br />
The instructional resources center, located in Kunsela<br />
Hall, provides all non-entertainment audiovisual and television<br />
services to <strong>SUNY</strong>IT. Studio facilities combined with trained<br />
staff enable on-campus production for both video and audio<br />
programs in a wide variety <strong>of</strong> formats for many different uses.<br />
Television as an educational aid is an active component. The<br />
instructional resources center also provides services to students.<br />
A computer graphics workstation provides students access<br />
to producing materials and presentations for the classroom.<br />
Digital cameras and camcorders are available to borrow for<br />
class projects. Students also have access to videotape editing<br />
equipment.<br />
Students are encouraged to be an active part <strong>of</strong> the technology<br />
infrastructure <strong>of</strong> the college. Students may elect to pursue<br />
employment within one <strong>of</strong> the technology support areas or,<br />
through coordination with the appropriate faculty advisor,<br />
address a specific technology challenge as part <strong>of</strong> a for-credit<br />
academic experience.<br />
Teaching and Learning Support<br />
Student success is very important to <strong>SUNY</strong>IT, and the<br />
services available through our teaching and learning support<br />
area are designed to ensure all students have the best possible<br />
support during their time at <strong>SUNY</strong>IT. The teaching and learning<br />
support group provides assistance to students and faculty on<br />
the exploration and usage <strong>of</strong> various instructional technologies,<br />
including our online learning management system, ANGEL.<br />
Students interested in help with either math or writing skills<br />
can visit our learning center. The Learning Center has both<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional and student tutors available for a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />
specific courses as well as a small computer lab which students<br />
can use with their tutors for more intensive help. The Learning<br />
Center also manages any ADA based testing accommodations.<br />
The Learning Center<br />
The Learning Center <strong>of</strong>fers academic help for students in<br />
several ways. Tutors are available for most subjects <strong>of</strong>fered at<br />
<strong>SUNY</strong>IT, as well as for English as a Second Language. Special<br />
small group instruction is also available for selected courses.<br />
The Center <strong>of</strong>fers workshops in areas such as study skills, writing<br />
and research, time management, and test taking. Services<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Learning Center are free <strong>of</strong> charge and available to all<br />
<strong>SUNY</strong>IT students.<br />
