6 The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (often referred to as<br />
COSHH) to include subsequent amendments<br />
• are particularly important as the storage, use and sale of a wide range of chemicals forms<br />
an important part of salon services, especially as such substances are applied on and sold<br />
to non-employees, ie clients.<br />
7 The Electricity at Work Regulations<br />
• under this law, salons are required to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition; it<br />
covers responsibility to report any faulty electrical equipment in the workplace.<br />

8 Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (often<br />
referred to as RIDDOR)<br />
• under this regulation, salons are required to report injuries, diseases and dangerous<br />
occurrences. It is responsibility of staff to report to the relevant person any injuries and<br />
dangerous occurrences which happen at work. Salons may also require any potentially<br />
infectious conditions to also be reported.<br />
9 Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations<br />
• this law lays down rules for recommended volumes and strengths of different hydroxide<br />
based products. The strength of a product will vary depending on whether it has been<br />
prepared for professional or non-professional general use. It is important that when using<br />
these products, strength should be checked from the manufacturer’s guidance notes, and<br />
guidance be obtained from current legislation. (Copies of the Regulations can be bought<br />
from Her Majesty’s Stationery Office (HMSO) bookshops.<br />
Guidance can also be obtained from individual manufacturers and the Hairdressing and Beauty<br />
Suppliers Association.<br />
