that promotes healthy relationships.<br />
BUSINESS ADVOCACY<br />
December 1, <strong>2008</strong> marked the 20th anniversary of World<br />
AIDS Day and <strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> re-affirmed its commitment to<br />
strategically addressing the issues and challenges arising<br />
from the HIV pandemic in the workplace in particular and<br />
society in general. The <strong>Bank</strong> participated in the Global<br />
Fund site visit and organized a two--part command<br />
performance of a drama written by one of the <strong>Bank</strong>’s<br />
employees and titled “We Will Live”. The drama piece<br />
highlighted the need to stop and discourage stigma and<br />
discrimination in our society.<br />
The aims of the initiative were to reach out to the<br />
business community and general populace through<br />
awareness creation on HIV &AIDS, to correct the<br />
misconceptions about HIV & AIDS among members of<br />
staff and the general public and to provide a platform for<br />
members of staff to gain more knowledge on HIV & AIDS<br />
and develop zero tolerance for health related stigma and<br />
discrimination.<br />
The drama session attracted NGOs, the media,<br />
government officials, members of staff, customers of the<br />
<strong>Bank</strong> and representatives from financial institutions other<br />
corporate organizations. Mrs. Abimbola Emmanuela<br />
Fashola, the First Lady of Lagos State attended,<br />
representing the Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN).<br />
Mrs. Fashola gave a special speech on the importance of<br />
the eradication and treatment of HIV/AIDS. A presentation<br />
on the <strong>2008</strong> World AIDS Day was made by Bolaji Agbede,<br />
Head Group HR, <strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> Plc. Thereafter, the drama<br />
presentation took place which led to a call to action to<br />
support the eradication of HIV/AIDS and the signing of a<br />
call to action board by all the guests and staff of the <strong>Bank</strong>.<br />

– “Stigma and discrimination of people living with<br />
HIV/AIDS will only spread the virus. Give everyone the<br />
respect and support they deserve regardless of their status.<br />

FINANCING<br />
<strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>’s N25,000,000 (Twenty-Five Million Naira)<br />
<strong>2008</strong> global budget for the workplace programme was<br />
allocated as follows:<br />
Workshop for managers & above (1.2%), zonal<br />
sensitization workshop (6.2%), e-forum articles and write<br />
ups for three months (1.2%), one week counselling and<br />
peer educator course (61.5%), monthly HIV session at<br />
<strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> School of <strong>Bank</strong>ing Excellence (7.4%),<br />
bi-annual awareness programme (12.3%) and<br />
organisational support cost (10.2%).<br />
ACCESS BANK DEMONSTRATES LEADERSHIP IN THE<br />
FIGHT AGAINST HIV/AIDS<br />
<strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>, as an advocate for the eradication of<br />
HIV/AIDS, entered into strategic partnership with a<br />
coalition of over 100 global organizations under the<br />
auspices of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS,<br />
Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC) to keep the fight against<br />
HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria as a global priority.<br />
In line with this global commitment, the <strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong><br />
Group Managing Director, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, in<br />
collaboration with other Chief Executive Officers from<br />
leading GBC member companies are making<br />
unprecedented efforts against discrimination and stigma<br />
and have signed the Coalition’s HIV/AIDS nondiscrimination<br />
pledge.<br />
AWARENESS MATERIALS<br />

It is noteworthy that <strong>Access</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> is the only indigenous<br />
Nigerian company to sign on to the pledge.<br />
