Losing accessories.
Problem Summary
When the key is turned to start position and released, the key
does not spring back to the full ignition and accessory position.
Diagnostic Sequence
Checked the operation of the ignition switch and key.
The key felt very rough and would not come back to accessories.
The fault was isolated to the ignition switch electrics internally
collapsing.
Fault Description
The electrical part of the switch will not come out, only the
barrel and key assembly.
Through Ford, the part is only available by purchasing the
complete steering column assembly.
Fault Solution
A second hand part was located.
The original barrel and key assembly was fitted to the
replacement column and refitted to the vehicle.
No programming was required because of the use of the original
barrel and key assembly.
Recommended Time
Labour time was 3 hours, taking into account research time,
location of parts and actual time spent fixing the problem.

When acquiring a second-hand column make sure it is identical
to the original because there is a difference between models.
It is the barrel and key housing that varies and the barrels will not
interchange.
Correct position
column unlocked
Make sure the second-hand unit is not in the steering locked
position without the barrel and key, because this becomes
impossible to unlatch unless you release the pin.
