Draw up your wish list for 2012 The best businesses in the world are always striving to get better. by Geoff Mutton They know they have to improve their operations every year in order to stay ahead of the competition. This is the kind of attitude that has positioned them successfully in the marketplace. The situation is no different in the vehicle repair industry. I am amazed at how owners of highly profitable workshops are always striving to get better. They are always asking questions and networking with other businesses, trying to pick up ideas. By contrast I find that struggling workshops think they know everything and they don’t particularly take much interest in too much happening outside their workshop. Theirs is a classic attitude ‘I have been in business for 20 years so what can anyone possibly teach me that I don’t already know?’ I am sure every one of us knows at least one workshop that has shut down in the past year. There will be many reasons for this, but I’m suggesting that a significant one will be that the owner struggled with change and failed to continually improve the business. The new year is a good time to think about what you are going to improve in 2012. You might need to purchase new equipment, invest in staff training, work on your marketing, give the office a makeover or recruit a new technician. Honestly evaluate your business and list all the things that need improving. If you have staff, run an after hours planning session and get them involved. This will help you generate your list and also give your staff a sense of interest and a bit of ownership in the future success of your business. If the business is successful, everyone will benefit. Making a list of target improvements for the year is not rocket science. Everyone can do it if they have the will to improve. If you can’t generate a ‘things to improve’ list, I guess your business must be perfect and you’re making millions. So what are you waiting for. Organise a session with everyone concerned with your business and get cracking. Stay ahead of the game and ensure your business doesn’t become one of this year’s statistics.
