supercar, the resurrected
2013 Dodge Dart, the highly
acclaimed compact Cadillac and
unveiled vehicles with unprecedented
fuel-efficient technologies.
The four-wheeler that hogged the
limelight at the recent North American
International Auto Show was none other
than a ride-on mower — a first for the
show since its 1907 inception.
The Craftsman CTX caught the attention
of the most humble of acreage owners,
boasting a 23kW fuel-injected Briggs and
Stratton engine, the same brand which
once raced around the hills of Harrietville,
Victoria, settling an alcohol-fuelled
dispute and marking Australia’s first
mower race.
As the story goes, the five-man challenge
was initiated in a small country pub in
1978. The resulting race began with the
slow, smoke-belching chug of unmodified
mowers up the slopes of the hill, around
a gum tree and downhill in neutral to the
finish line — watched by half the town’s

Today’s members of
the Australian Ride-On
Lawn Mower Racing
Association, which
holds eight to ten
races a year, would no
doubt be impressed by
the new Craftsman’s
13 km/h speed and
18-inch turning circle.
But speed is not the
Craftsman’s likely
selling point and
racing not its purpose.
The so-called ‘luxury
lawn tractor’ has
been designed for the
distinguished rider.
Features such as electronic cutting
height adjustment would impress any
Jim’s Mower-man, while power steering,
a digital dash, cruise control, a 12-volt
adapter, iPod adapter and a cup holder
mean that acres of grass can be trimmed
in relative comfort and to the driver’s
preferred taste in music and brew.
An Australian version equipped with a
cooler box would mean there’d be no
need to leave the driver’s seat until the
job is done.
You’d also have the kids begging to take
on the once-dreaded chore of mowing
the lawns. One for the Christmas wish list
next year, perhaps.
