Households by Type<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Andover</strong> is made up <strong>of</strong> 9,724 households and <strong>of</strong> those households, 6,904, or 71% are<br />
families. The Census defines household as “all <strong>the</strong> persons who occupy a housing unit” and a family<br />
as one that “consists <strong>of</strong> a householder and one or more o<strong>the</strong>r persons living in <strong>the</strong> same household<br />
who are related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> householder by birth, marriage or adoption.”<br />
The Census fur<strong>the</strong>r breaks down <strong>the</strong> term<br />
household in<strong>to</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r an owner-occupied or<br />
renter-occupied living situation (see Table 4).<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Andover</strong> has 7,053 owner-occupied<br />
housing units and <strong>of</strong> that <strong>to</strong>tal, over 88% are<br />
married couples and 14% are made up <strong>of</strong> elderly<br />
households. Interestingly, <strong>the</strong> numbers start <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> unit (married couples, elderly,<br />
young adults, etc…)<br />
differ dramatically when you only look at renter-occupied households. In <strong>North</strong> <strong>Andover</strong>, 70% <strong>of</strong><br />
renter-occupied households are married couples, and 18% are elderly households. Only two<br />
neighboring <strong>to</strong>wns, Topsfield and Boxford have higher percentages <strong>of</strong> renter-occupied elderly<br />
households.<br />
