nodes such as Balcatta Industrial Area and Malaga Industrial Area
and to Tonkin Highway. Other regional roads include Alexander
Drive which connects the Local Area with Perth City Centre and
has various high-frequency bus services along it; Beach Road
which runs east-west from Carine to West Swan; and Mirrabooka
Avenue which connects to Mirrabooka Regional Centre. Alexander
Drive and Reid Highway are both designated as ‘transport corridors’
in Network City with a focus on expedient travel for motor vehicles
and public transport, as opposed to ‘activity corridors’ which would
otherwise be characterised by good public transport services and
clusters of commercial, business and other activity.
The Mirrabooka Local Area is otherwise surrounded mostly by lowmedium
density residential areas. These include Koondoola, Balga
and Dianella. Balga, having been established largely as a State
Housing area, has over the recent decade experienced significant
urban renewal as the New North New Living Programme has been
undertaken and as the area’s value has increasingly been
recognised. The New North project has involved streetscaping
enhancements and replacement/redevelopment of older housing
stock. A Swan TAFE College is also located in Balga, which also
provides various educational and training opportunities. Meanwhile,
key facilities in Dianella near the Mirrabooka Local Area include St
Andrews Grammar School and the Hellenic Community Aged Care
Facility.
