the opportunity to land owners to improve development on their
land, the change is likely to be gradual. This should allow for much
needed infrastructure and facilities to expand at the same time as
any new development in the area.
Economic Environment
The Mirrabooka Village Shopping Centre was listed as the top place
in need of improvement in the Local Area. It is a highly utilised
centre, but is lacking in maintenance and aesthetic appeal. It is
proposed that encouraging new development around the centre,
through residential rezoning, will also encourage redevelopment of
some aspects of the commercial centre.
Although the Mirrabooka Regional Centre is not included in the
Mirrabooka Local Area, it did feature prominently during the
community engagement process. The Mirrabooka Regional Centre
Improvement Strategy will look at creating a town square with a
piazza and shop, as well as a new main street and road network.
The improvement of the Regional Centre should lead to an increase
in employment and economic growth throughout the Local Area.
Movement Network
In relation to movement networks, there are high levels of car
dependency in the Mirrabooka Local area. While public transport is
provided, it is limited and infrequent. The community has called for
the further development and expansion of a connective transport
network and more train services and bus integration. The City
would be required to collaborate with the Public Transport Authority
to provide public transport and could also work with developers to
provide pedestrian and cyclist facilities, which link with major
destinations.
Local traffic and transport safety issues were also identified during
community engagement. It is envisaged that the City will be able to
address these issues throughout the Local Area Implementation
planning process.
Key Opportunities
The key opportunities, which have been identified from the process,
include: -
• Further establishing Mirrabooka Village as a community hub
which provides a range of commercial and social facilities
• Encouraging revitalisation of some residential areas through
rezoning
• Further protecting and maintaining local parks and reserves
as well as the Bush Forever site
• Acknowledging, embracing and educating on the cultural
diversity within the Mirrabooka Local Area
• Retaining most of the current housing stock in the area,
allowing larger families to continue to reside in Mirrabooka
Mirrabooka Local Area Community Vision
In the Year 2020 the Mirrabooka Local Area is an area that celebrates its diversity through its social connectedness and
activities, is a welcome open safe environment and is enhanced by local parks, managed bushland and ‘green’
streetscapes. It has a community that respects differences and one that is proud of their area.
