12.1 NOTICE OF MOTION - COUNCILLOR JENKINSON - UNIVERSAL ACCESS<br />

DESIGN<br />

Councillor Jenkinson submitted the following notice <strong>of</strong> motion at the Council meeting held<br />

30 October 2012:-<br />

“That in order to achieve a greater proportion <strong>of</strong> housing that incorporates universal<br />

access design in the <strong>City</strong>, as adopted within the <strong>City</strong>’s Housing Strategy, a report be<br />

provided detailing:-<br />

a. mechanisms Council can pursue to implement this outcome <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’s Housing<br />

Strategy;<br />

b. modifications that are required to the Western Australian Planning Commission’s<br />

Residential Design Codes to provide statutory support for universal access in<br />

housing design which the Council can consider and advocate for.”<br />

Background Information/Reason for Motion (provided by Councillor Jenkinson)<br />

1. Promoting liveable homes and universal design principals through our website and<br />

actively through our planning <strong>of</strong>ficers being able to provide advice to ratepayers,<br />

developers, architects and builders; and<br />

2. Working with WALGA and the <strong>City</strong>'s Disability Services Committee to put universal<br />

design principles into guidelines that can be used in planning schemes (this may mean<br />

writing to, lobbying the Planning Minister and WAPC).<br />
