St Mary’s College Broome has a history of providing a quality
Catholic education for students in the Kimberley region built
upon a tradition spanning 105 years, underpinned by the
dedicated service of Religious Orders, staff and parents who
have contributed to the education of students at St Mary’s
College. This year we congratulate Carlene Smith on
achieving the distinguished milestone of having served in
Catholic Education at St Mary’s College and Nulungu College
in Broome for the past 30 years. Our school is very fortunate
to have dedicated staff like Carlene and we look forward to
appropriately recognising this significant achievement with
Carlene and our College community.
This term we have continued our commitment to connect with
each of the four orders associated with St Mary’s College.
We were delighted to host Sr Angela Slattery for a week in
our College. Sr Angela is a Loreto Sister who worked as a
teacher on the St Mary’s Primary Campus and in the Broome
community between 1975 and 1995. Sr Angela now lives in
Melbourne and she works in the Heart of Life Spirituality Centre.
The purpose of Sr Angela’s visit was to reconnect our
College with the Loreto Sisters and to enable students to
hear about the work of the Loreto Sisters and the life of their
founder Venerable Mary Ward, I.B.V.M.
Other visitors to our College have included teachers Ms
Natalie Calleja, Acting Head of Secondary and Mr John van
Nus, Middle School Teacher who were with us for Term 1. At
the end of term we also farewelled Mr Paul Munday, Upper
School Coordinator, Mr Sean Burroughs, Teacher Assistant
and Mr Peter Hansford, Practicum Teacher, We thank each
staff member for their great contribution to St Mary’s College.
Throughout Lent, students on both campuses focused on
raising funds for Project Compassion. Deserving a special
mention were our Year 6 students who organised an
outstanding disco raising $2000 towards Project
Compassion. During Holy Week our College community’s
focus was on the importance of the events that led up to the
death and resurrection of Jesus. The Stations of the Cross
and our Easter Reflection involving students from the Primary
and Secondary Campuses retelling the story of the most
important time in our Christian calendar.
1. LISTENING HEARTS ST MARY’S COLLEGE BROOME
From the Principal
I am encouraged with the way in which our students
from remote communities have settled into St Mary’s
College. They are taking the challenge of adjusting to
life away from their home and family and are to be
congratulated on their positive attitude towards their
new school. This year we have 35 students from areas
including Billiluna, Derby, Frog Hollow, Jungdranung,
Warmun, Kalumburu and Kununurra Communities. The
students are well supported both here and at the
Broome Residential College.
Recognising the difficulties associated with
transitioning for our new students from remote
communities, Mrs Jennifer Cambridge and our student
services staff developed a new transition program for
the start of 2013. Feedback from students and staff is
that the new transition program has been a great
success and we look forward to many more students
from our remote communities joining in our educational
program at St Mary’s College. In particular I thank Mrs
Jennifer Cambridge, Mr Jack Reagan and staff from the
Clontarf Academy, Aboriginal Teacher Assistants Ms
Rose Bin Swani, Ms Carlene Smith, Ms Helen Howard
along with Ms Kristine Van and her staff at the
Residential College and all of the students’ teachers for
making their transition to St Mary’s College a success.
A current focus for our teaching staff is the preparation
of courses and programs aligned with the Australian
Curriculum. Our professional development days over
the next 18 months will spend a great amount of time
preparing for the full implementation of the Curriculum
in 2015. I am pleased to report that many of our
learning areas are already aligning their teaching and
learning programs to the Australian Curriculum and we
will be well placed to meet the requirements for
implementation across all earning areas by 2015.
I take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who
contributed to the development of this important plan
including members of the College Board, staff,
students, parents and guardians.
We are most fortunate to have a very active parent
community at the College. This ongoing involvement
by our parents has a strong student focus. At the
commencement of the term it was wonderful to have
students return to the newly refurbished ablution
blocks on the Primary Campus. The project, overseen
by parent Phil Belfrage, was made possible by the
support of many parents and the generosity of a
number of Broome businesses. During a recent
College Assembly, we were able to recognise and
thank each person who contributed to this very
worthwhile project.
Finally, over the Term 1 holidays eleven students and
a number of staff will travel to Taiji Japan for the
exchange program with our Japanese sister school,
Taiji Elementary School. Our links with the Japan and
the town of Taiji date back to 1908 when our school
began educating children of the pearl divers who came
to Broome including children of families from the Taiji
region in Japan. This year’s Taiji Exchange program
has been generously supported by the Shire of
Broome and by many local businesses who
contributed prizes for a very successful quiz night. We
look forward to welcoming students and staff from Taiji
to Broome later in the year.
Principal
As well as busily learning in the classrooms, our
students have been involved in a number of Inter
House and Inter School Carnivals throughout the term.
Each was a great success due to the organisation by
our dedicated staff, parent assistants and the eager
participation of our students. We congratulate our
Primary Swimming Team who was placed first overall
in the Primary Inter School Swimming Carnival
Handicap Division.
Our strategic planning process has continued, and at
the commencement of next term, the St Mary’s College
2013-2015 Strategic Plan will be launched. The plan is
the culmination of an extensive consultation process
spanning almost two years and will guide the policy
and decision making for our school over the next three
years.
Congratulations!
The College community
congratulates Carlene
Smith on her 30 years of
service to Catholic Education
in Broome.
Carlene has worked at
Nulungu and St Mary’s
Colleges touching the
lives of many students over
the years.
We look forward to
celebrating this significant achievement with Carlene.
LISTENING HEARTS ST MARY’S COLLEGE BROOME 2.
Head of Secondary
a wonderful sense of family. The level of pastoral care of
students, family and staff is undeniably fantastic. Under
the leadership of Michael Pepper, this College can only
go from strength to strength. As in any school, there are
challenges that still need to be met and I am very confident
that they will be.
Term One has evaporated so very quickly! It feels that
no sooner have I arrived that I am now leaving. I would
like to share my observations of St Mary’s College in
the short time that I have been here and my
impressions of this school and its community are
extremely positive.
The staff are so very generous in the giving of their
time and talents to support, encourage, guide, befriend
and educate the students. I have been so impressed
with teachers’ willingness to put in the long hours,
attend professional development, liaise with each
other, seek support, have conversations and give of
themselves all in the name of doing what they can to
help the students at St Mary’s College. This generosity
of spirit is obvious not just in the teachers but in all
members of the College community and it is such
I will take with me very positive and fond memories of St
Mary’s. The students have been a delight to work with
as have been the parents with whom I have had contact.
There are so many staff who have touched my heart and
who have exemplified what the teaching profession is all
about. The Easter Reflection will remain with me as one
of the most beautiful and poignant expressions of Holy
Week.
I am so very grateful for the opportunity to have
journeyed with you for this first term. I will forever hold a
special place in my heart for St Mary’s College, Broome
and will continue to follow its progress. I feel very
blessed to have had this experience and thank you all
for making my very short stay such a positive and
memorable one.
Naming of the Far Sitella Ceremony
St Mary’s College Choir was a central part of the Naming of the Far
Sitella Ceremony at the Port of Broome. The Farstad Shipping
Company expressed their gratitude to the choir with a generous
donation to the College.
Head of Primary Campus
Our first term on the Primary Campus has been filled
with many wonderful and creative learning
opportunities. Teachers and students have been
completely immersed in many different activities.
Parents and carers too have been given many
opportunities to be a part of the learning journey.
These moments should be celebrated.
I have had the pleasure of working in a variety of
classrooms with small groups as well as whole class. It
certainly has been a pleasurable experience to be back in
the classroom working with the different groups. I have
taken Religious Education in Year Six, helped with hand
writing in Year One and worked with a small group of
students in the area of guided reading in Year Four.
The Parish and College connection is fantastic at St
Mary’s. This is partly due to the traditions which have
been in place at the College for some time and due to
the fact that we have some wonderful parish Priests.
Both Father Ernesto and Father Matt are always welcome
faces on the campus. They both bring so much
knowledge and understanding which they kindly share
with staff and students. They also willingly assist with
our fortnightly Eucharistic Celebrations as well as special
events such as the Blessing of the Palms which
took place early in Term One. Fr Ernesto and Fr Matt
also enthusiastically participate in and lead staff and
students in Liturgy of the Word celebrations to ensure
that God is speaking to us at our very hearts and
souls.
Our choir, under the direction of Ms Robyn, were
invited to perform at an Official Blessing and Naming
Ceremony of the supply ship, Far Sitella. Choir
members from both secondary and primary presented
the National Anthem as well as Lean on Me written by
American-singer song writer Bill Withers. Those
invited to the ceremony were very impressed by the
presentation. Students and staff were also invited to
have a tour of the ship and this was enjoyed by all.
Elections for House Captains took place in the Year Six
classroom just before the Swimming Carnival. Students
who wanted to be considered put their name forward and
voting took place with the results announced just before
the Carnival. The very proud House Captains took on the
challenge to lead their House in competition. Students
were recognised at the Whole School Assembly held in
March and the winning House was Barbier. Mr Edmund is
to be congratulated on a very professionally run carnival.
Helpers, before, as well as at the carnival, did a marvellous
job and are also thanked for their efforts.
It was great to see our Year Six students take on a fund
raising event. They worked with their teachers to come up
with a proposal for a disco to help raise funds for Caritas.
The SRC group met with Ms Steph and I to brainstorm
what would be required to hold such an event. They wrote
letters to staff members and P & F members as well as
helped to set up and decorate the area. The groundsmen,
who always do an excellent job, worked hard to place the
screens around the undercover area to help set the scene.
Popcorn, drinks and door takings allowed the Year Six
group to raise a grand total of $2,000.
Sacrament of First Reconciliation
On Saturday March 23rd, twenty three young students,
eighteen from St Mary’s College, gathered to celebrate the
sacrament of First Reconciliation. In the weeks prior to the
celebration students were prepared for this sacrament by
Father Matt, Father Ernesto, parents and class teachers.
The preparation included students interpreting Gospel
stories such as The Prodigal Son and The Lost Sheep, role
playing what forgiveness is and discussing why confession
brings us closer to God. A big thank you to the parents
who helped prepare their child at this special time and
assisted with the morning tea.
Literacy on the Primary Campus
On Thursday, April 4 th the K – 3 students were fortunate to have
a guest to present their book packages from “Books in Homes.”
Mr Brenton McKenna who is a former St Mary’s College student
and now a published graphic novelist came and spoke to the
students and helped present the books to the classes. Mr
McKenna also explained how he worked on drawing his
characters for his stories as well as answering many interesting
questions from the students. The Year 3 students were
particularly keen to talk about Mr McKenna’s novel, “Ubby’s
Underdogs.”
“Books in Homes” which has been sponsored by Catholic
much improved literacy skills.
O’Brien House Named after Mother Antonio O’Brien—Founding Order – St John of God
O'Brien House celebrated the Feast Day of St John, 8th March, the patron saint of the St John of God Sisters.
O'Brien House is named after Sister Antonio O'Brien from the St John of God order, our founding religious order.
In 1908 Sr Antonia was the one of the first sisters to establish St Mary’s Primary School.
On the day, a Mass was led by Father Matt in the Nulungu Chapel. During lunch O’Brien 1 sold Soda Stream
soft drink to raise money for CARITAS and currently students are developing a crest to represent our House.
In the photo below right, Yasmine Ruttiman is holding a clay plaque to celebrate the occasion. A first for St
Mary's College, we look forward to the other House Masses to be celebrated on the feast day of each of the
Founders.
Year 7 Camp
During Week 6, our Year 7 students attended the Broome Camp School for the 2013 Year 7 Camp. The students
had a wonderful time participating in a range of challenging activities. The students’ physical endurance and relationship
skills were tested throughout the 3 day camp, as they worked together in teams to negotiate obstacles and solve
problems. Camp activities included;
Raft building
Milk crate wall building
Snake Handling
PVC water relay
Treasure Hunt
Low ropes course
Prusiking (knot making)
Astro Tour
Beach Games
Mass
Wildlife Park Visit
The students also had opportunities for free time, where they were able to sit together and reflect on their transition
into secondary school, or participate in sporting activities such as basketball, cricket, soccer and pool-volleyball.
Each day of the camp was action-packed, beginning with a 6:00am run along Cable Beach (Miss Sam set a cracking
pace), and then moving into team rotation activities after breakfast. The last night on camp was particularly special,
with the students enjoying a tasty barbeque on Cable Beach, watching the sunset and exploring the rock pools at low
tide.
The conduct and attitude of the Year 7 students on camp were excellent, and the success of the camp is a measure of
their respect and enthusiasm. It was a privilege to spend time with such a positive, supportive group of young
students. In addition to the students, a number of people deserve recognition for assisting with the camp: Fr. Matt for
a special Friday Mass service, Miss Jo for her engaging presentation and all the St Mary’s staff who contributed their
time and effort over the 3 days. Finally, special mention must go to Brad, Carmel and all of the wonderful staff at
Broome Camp School for making our stay such an enjoyable experience.
The Year 7 Foods class have
stepped up to the plate and made
delicious pizza subs with healthy
enjoying the taste sensation of
their own pizza subs.
Year 12 2AB students created a
dish using locally sourced products
mainly coconut and mango as the
main ingredient. Attention was given
to taste and appearance when
serving the dishes.
Year 8.2 Science investigated the
single cell and created their own
model using a cake, some icing as
cytoplasm and food additive reduced
lollies for organelles. This was one
science experiment we could all eat!
Leadership and study skills seminar
A Leadership and Study Skills Seminar was
held for our Upper School students at Notre
Dame University early in Term One. The
purpose of the day was to reflect on what it
means to be a St Mary's College role model, to
consider ways of displaying leadership on
campus and within the Broome community and
to design a study schedule and prioritise
commitments.
During the seminar the students participated in
passive and active learning through
undertaking various cooperative learning tasks
that were delivered by a range of presenters.
They also undertook a leadership pledge
whereby each student committed to a) work
with other students to build a Christian learning
community, b) commit to serve the College
community generously and without fear or
favour, and c) encourage fellow students to
observe College regulations and resist peer
pressure to misbehave.
We considered various styles of leadership, how to be a good listener and the notion of leadership as a service to
others. The 2013 Leadership and Study Skills days were a great success and will hopefully these Leadership Days
will become an annual event.
Year 6 Fundraising Disco
Fundraising for Project Compassion
On Friday March 22 nd Year 6 organised a school disco to
raise money for Caritas Project Compassion.
It was a great experience for the Year 6 students to raise
money for charity. The Year 6 students put in a lot of effort.
We couldn’t have done it without the approval of Mrs Margaret
Valentine and all the help from the parents and teachers. At
first while decorating it looked like the disco had already
ended but as we improved with our decorating skills it looked
fantastic.
Some people had cameras and were filming people dancing.
A lot of people thought this was great. This encouraged
people to dance more. Some children were screaming and
playing chasey but this was handled well by the speakers on
stage and it stopped immediately. We got great comments
from children about the music played on the night of the disco.
People wore some very fancy clothes, there was a fair bit of
makeup seen and there was also a lot of bling.
In the lower primary group, the best dancer was Marley
Weeding PPS and also the best dressed was Lulu Smith PPE.
For the upper group the best dressed was Holy Newton from
5E and the best dancer was Lydon McKenna from 4S.
Congratulations to the winners!
In the end we raised just over $2000. That is an amazing
achievement for St Mary’s!
Overall the disco was a fun night enjoyed by lots of students
and guests who attended. Thank you to all the people who
made this night happen.
Year 12 Perth Perspectives Art Exhibition
Year 12 students studying 3A/B Visual Art travelled to Perth on
Sunday March 17 th to view the Perspectives Exhibition at the WA
National Gallery. The students participated in an Art Analysis
workshop then viewed the Photography of New York from
MOMA, and spent time in the Perspectives Exhibition. The
students were able to experience first-hand the high level of Art
that is expected in this course. Also the students realised that
seeing original work is so different from looking at a reproduction
Swimming Lessons 2013
Students in Pre Primary to Year 3 participated in In Term
Swimming Lessons during Weeks 2 to 6 of Term 1.
Years 2 and 3 were first off the block with their lessons in
Weeks 2 and 3 and then the Pre-Primary and Year 1
students attended their lessons from Weeks 5-7. Due to
inclement weather the Pre-Primary and Year 1 students
missed out on a few lessons but Broome Recreation and
Aquatic Centre (BRAC) were kind enough to make up the
lessons.
On the first day of the swimming lessons students were
grouped according to their swimming level and their
swimming levels were assessed. During the lessons
students gained self-confidence entering the water
safely. Students in levels1and 2 learnt to swim in the
lagoon and then gradually moved to the lane pool where
they learnt to glide, float, kick and use their freestyle
arms to swim to their instructor. In the lane pool students
learnt to enter the water safely and how to find the edge
Primary Swimming Carnival
The Annual Primary House Swimming Carnival was held
at the Broome Recreational and Aquatic Centre on the
15 th March. Students had been attending early morning
swimming sessions twice a week for several weeks
beforehand to train for this event. These sessions were
aimed at improving the students’ stroke technique and
general fitness and the dedication and hard work really
paid off. Each year level also attended sessions at the
pool in order to do time trials and go over the correct
finishing and turning requirements for each event.
The Carnival was a huge success, with all of the
students competing, cheering and spectating in the very
best of spirits. Sports carnivals like these would not be
possible without the help and support of fellow staff
members as well as all of the parent helpers. These
parent helpers gave up a whole day of their time to help
out doing vital jobs like timing, judging, and marshalling
and it was great to see them displaying such great St
Mary’s College community spirit.
Congratulations to all competitors for trying their hardest
and doing their best. On the day 6 school records were
broken: Elijah Neesham broke the Year 6 50m Freestyle
Boys with 35.78 seconds; he also broke the 25 m
Butterfly with 18.31 seconds. Daniel Ralph broke the
Year 5 boys 25m Butterfly with a swim of 22.15 seconds
and his brother Nathan Ralph in Year 3 broke 3 records:
the 25m Freestyle in 19.90 seconds, the 50m freestyle in
44.50 seconds, and the 25m Breaststroke in 26.03
seconds. Well done!
It was a very close contest all day between Barbier
House and O’Brien House, with Barbier eventually
coming out on top and winning the Swimming Carnival
Shield. Well done Barbier House and to all the students
who were presented with medals for being Year level
Easter Reflection
The Dance, Drama and Primary Choir students presented a very reverent reflection based on the final week of Jesus’
life at the Holy Place on the Primary Campus on March 27th.The combination of this strong group of students led the
audience through a powerful journey of reflective narration.
The soulful music, emotive dance performance and a touching interpretation of Mary the mother of Jesus encouraged
the community to prepare for Easter Sunday. This event has now become an Easter tradition to enable the College
community to combine with members of the wider community to gather together and acknowledge the Christian ideals
of faith, worship, love, compassion and generosity towards others.
