What an exciting and challenging year we have all had at the J! Below is an outline of our achievements and
challenges that have occurred this past year and what lies ahead of us in the coming year.
Tom Warne, Chair, Board of Directors
FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
• After approximately one year of hard work and great leadership and
persistence of Helaine Levy, our Leader of the Year, and Jim Shiner, the
“Executive Search Committee” made a recommendation to the Board
of Directors to replace our long term all-star CEO who is retiring after
27 plus years, Ken Light, with the Shaw JCC of Akron, Ohio CEO, Todd
Rockoff. Todd has been part of the JCC movement his entire adult life.
We are extremely excited to have him and look forward to Todd filling
those giant shoes of Ken.
• Many Stakeholder Focus Group Meetings were held to determine the
JCC direction and facilities that are needed to take us to the next level
and make the “J” an important part of the 21st century in serving our
greater community. The Stakeholders that participated represented all
corners of our community. The three Capital Campaign projects that
came out of our focus groups are:
• Expansion of our wellness and fitness center with the caveat of
more emphasis on wellness than we have had in the past.
• Expansion of our Young Adult Specials Needs Facility and an
indoor play space for our young children. The Young Adult Special
Needs Program and after school childcare are both operating at
full capacity with no space to accommodate more.
• Development of the Jewish Heritage Center to be an interactive
indoor/outdoor space with our beautiful sculpture garden so that
the JCC can host many more events in a pleasing environment.
Note - all three of these projects will increase membership units and
will result in a positive return on investment.
• This past fiscal year we are happy to report that the JCC had a positive
cash flow, continued to fund Repair and Replacement, and was even
able to repay a small loan given to ourselves to this fund, which is so
important to maintain our great facility.
• Our Arts and Culture programming has had a record number of art
exhibits and events relating to our sculpture garden. The number of
participants at these events has also set a record.
1

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
• To improve the J, we have engaged Club One, a health, fitness, and
operations consultant, to critique our operations and guide us in
improving ourselves. I want to particularly compliment our CEO
and all senior staff in recognizing that we needed the advice of
an outside consultant. They told the Board when requesting the
investment approval that outside eyes were necessary and I feel this
type of culture, openness, and authenticity are major components
in making the Tucson JCC what it is.
• We are happy to note that our year-round swim team has 134
members and is the strongest youth swim team program in Southern
Arizona. This is due to an amazing group of volunteers headed by
our 2013 Volunteer of the Year, Kyra Holtzman.
• We are also very proud of our collaborations in many instances
this past year, with not only the Jewish community, but the overall
community as a whole; an integral part of our mission.
Our Challenges and Goals for this Year
• Full support from all of us for our new CEO, Todd Rockoff, will
be needed for the continuation of the solid and sound foundation
that has been built, underpinning our strong JCC, in order to
develop additional innovative and creative programming to serve
the greater Tucson community.
• Achieve our fundraising goal of $3.9 million dollars plus, by
working hard to realize contributions from all of us and all parts of
the community so that our renovation and expansion plans can be
realized.
• Begin construction of the three projects noted above with a quick
and efficient outcome.
• That we continue to listen to the market and all of you as members
and the community at large, so that the JCC can advance and create
the appropriate programs to fulfill all of our needs.
It is important that every one of us realize that all of the achievements
of the past, the strong foundation that has been created, and the
goals and achievements that will be realized in the future, occur as
a result of every dedicated staff member and volunteer, of which
there are literally hundreds. The dedication of our staff and all
of you will enable the Tucson Jewish Community Center to serve
and grow with the Southern Arizona community for many future
generations.
2012 HIGHLIGHTS
ARTS & CULTURE
More than a dozen exhibits were featured in the Fine Art Gallery and the Film Festival
received extensive media coverage which resulted in thousands of attendees.
CHILDREN & YOUTH
Family events and programs were strong and plentiful this year with events like Chocolate
Seder, Parent’s Night Out, and Puttin’ on the Ritz!
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
ECE continues to offer fresh and innovative programming to its children and families. From
parades, to fundraisers, to wellness programs, the teaching staff is always thinking of new
ideas to engage participants and create educational opportunities for children.
SPECIAL NEEDS SERVICES
Special Needs Services had an exciting year as Taglit teamed up with the Special Olympics!
They also recently received a pool chair lift to help participants and members easily enter
and exit the pool.
SPORTS & WELLNESS
Sports & Wellness received a fresh coat of paint and additional cardio machines. They
continue to offer hundreds of fitness classes a month as well as educational opportunities
for nutrition and wellness.
VISION
We strive to be an outstanding (perhaps the preeminent)
Jewish Community Center in America
as evidenced by:
• A steady increase in Jewish Connections
• A hamish (comfortable, at home) atmosphere with respect
and a sense of belonging
• Sound financial results
• Strong programs demonstrated by quality, quantity, and fit
with our mission
• A state-of-the-art, clean, safe, functional, well-maintained
facility
• Present and developing leadership comprised of energized
staff, volunteers, and members committed to mission,
vision, and high-levels of mutual satisfaction
• A place of esteem and respect as viewed by the broader
community, including a commitment to expose and share
the richness and tradition of Jewish culture with members
of the non-Jewish Community
4

VALUES
The Tucson Jewish Community Center Values:
• Jewish roots, history, tradition, rituals, and values (i.e.
Jewish Culture)
• Excellence in services and programs
• Physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being
• Democratic decision-making
• Financial responsibility and accountability
• Life-long learning
• Creativity, Partnership, Community
5

ARTS & CULTURE
The Arts & Culture Department continues
to cultivate new and dynamic relationships
with organizations as diverse as The Tucson
Jewish History Museum and the Arizona
Center for Judaic Studies; Arizona Opera
Company and Tucson Symphony Orchestra;
Wingspan and the Pima Council on Aging;
and the Jewish Community Relations
Council and the Holocaust Education
Resource Center of the Coalition for Jewish
Education. These vibrant partnerships
enhance our programming, introduce our
members to the important work being done
by other community agencies and introduce
new audiences to the cultural arts offerings
at the JCC.
The Fine Art Gallery offered 14 shows this
past year, and hosted the preview exhibition
for Tucson Pima Arts Council’s annual Open
Studio Tour.
TPAC’s Deputy Director, David Hoyt
Johnson, served as juror for the 4th Annual
Sculpture Garden Exhibition, and selected
15 new pieces for this year’s show. Over 100
Sculpture Garden patrons enjoyed “Jazz
in the Garden” -- a beautiful evening with
dinner and music under the stars, celebrating
the installation of the new work. The event
provided an opportunity to meet many of
the sculptors and preview the exhibit before
the public reception.
Under the leadership of Patty Peck,
our Volunteer of the Year, over 2,400
people attended the 21st Annual Tucson
International Jewish Film Festival, up 19%
from the year before. The Film Festival
Committee works diligently for the better
part of the year to choose the festival lineup,
and their efforts result in an outstanding
selection of films from around the world,
treating subjects such as the Holocaust,
the environment, Israeli culture, the LGBT
experience, and Jewish heritage. We are
grateful to the family and friends of Bob
Polinsky (of blessed memory) for the creation
of the Bob Polinsky Memorial Media Arts
Fund. Their contributions now underwrite
the festival’s opening night festivities and
will help maintain the quality equipment in
the JCC’s Media Arts Center.
6

CATERING & RENTALS
The Corporate and Event Rentals department celebrated a
successful year with many returning clients as well as several
new clients. We participated in a number of networking
opportunities including the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber
of Commerce Multi-Chamber Expo and the MTCVB First
Tuesday luncheons.
To keep the JCC competitive and reflect what is represented
in the marketplace we changed the name of three of our
meeting spaces. The Auditorium is now the Ballroom; the
Assembly Room became the Catalina Room; the combination
of the Auditorium and Assembly Rooms became the Catalina
Ballroom, and the Boardroom became the Executive
Boardroom.
Our Outside Sales Coordinator continued to showcase the
versatility of our facility to potential clients including nonprofit
and University of Arizona groups. To better market
ourselves, we created a new sales kit to send and deliver to
prospective clients and we updated our webpage on the JCC
website to be more descriptive and user-friendly.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
It has been an exciting year in Early Childhood. We began the year partnering
with the University of Arizona “Talking Matters!” project. We are one of two
early childhood programs in Tucson selected to participate. The focus of this
project is identifying children with speech and language delays and enhancing all
children’s speech and language through professional development. ECE faculty
attended workshops, classrooms were mentored by UA faculty and a child focus
team was created with support from the Talking Matters team of experts. Parent
roundtables were offered with speech and language pathologists and experts in
bilingual and multilingual language development.
We attended two informative conferences in March. The first conference was
the annual Jewish Community Center Association Professional Conference in
Orlando. The Early Childhood Education and Family Engagement job track
introduced Sheva: JCC Association’s Early Learning Framework. We will begin
introducing Sheva to the faculty this summer. The second conference took place
in Columbus as we participated in a 3-day Training Academy to become certified
Discover CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) trainers. Our Early
Childhood program will embrace “Discover Catch,” which focuses on creating
healthy nutrition and exercise habits in children. We look forward to our Early
Childhood program becoming a “school of excellence.”
CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
Department changes in 2012 included the addition of Family
Engagement programming, with new enrichment classes and events
for children of all ages, as well as families. These included “Family
Luau,” “Family Movie Night,” “Sukkah Shake” and “Hanukkah Party.”
The department also added a full-time tween/teen and BBYO staff
person to increase offerings for the middle and high school age group.
We are happy once again to report that the Children and Youth
department has exceeded budget projections for 2012 in Camp, J-Care
Afterschool programming, School Days Out and Enrichment Classes.
Camp “J” continues to grow as evidenced by the increase in total camper
numbers. For a second year in a row, we reached over 100 children in
the Camp Shalom program for grades K-2. We also enjoyed over a 30%
increase in Camp Tiyul for grades 6-9. We introduced Camp Bonim/
L.I.T. Madrichim (teacher assistant) week, which featured intensive
training and learning skills to become a certified teacher assistant.
With the support of local synagogues, 12 participants earned their
certificates and were required to work at local Tucson Synagogues.
We are proud of the JCCA benchmarking results and parent survey
respondents as Camp J scored with the absolute highest marks in both
quality and satisfaction. We exceeded all other camps in our category.
Again, much success can be attributed to the return of nearly 85% of
our enthusiastic and creative staff members from previous years, and
everyone’s commitment in making the camp experience to be one of
long-lasting memories, friendships, learning and personal growth.
9

SPECIAL NEEDS SERVICES
The Special Needs Services Department saw an increase in
participants with our year-round Day Program for young adults
growing from 16 to 23 participants, and our Summer Camp Taglit
growing from 36 to 41.
The Taglit Summer Program was restructured to offer two
separate tracts; one to focus on vocational skills and the other
focused on life skills development. Both groups experience a
summer filled with fun!
The Summer Inclusion program welcomed 37 participants, including
five in our Early Childhood Education program. Additionally, Summer
Inclusion program partnered with Taglit Summer Program to create
a volunteer opportunity for our high school students to run activities
multiple times each week at “Camp J.”
In the day program, we continue to enjoy weekly classes with respected
and well-known instructors leading karate classes as well as yoga
and art classes. We are also fortunate to have a variety of community
partners who welcome our day program participants as volunteers.
10

SPORTS & WELLNESS
The Sports & Wellness fitness room has a coat of new paint, two
new Stepmills and two additional PreCore Elliptical trainers. The
department is very excited about the upcoming plans for the
renovation of Sports & Wellness which will include:
• Expanded space for cardio equipment
• Expanded space for stretching
• A Mind/Body Studio
A unique wellness class was offered in the Fall, “Raw n’ Fit
Nutrition.” This six-week series taught members how to
prepare healthy foods using organic, unprocessed ingredients.
They received meal plans and recipes as well as participated in
a weekly food demonstration. Additionally the “Fit” portion
of the class included a functional fitness routine that required
minimal equipment and can be done at the gym, home or on
the go.
The department partnered with the University of Arizona
Triathalon Club, the Tricats, to hold the First Annual “Young
Wildcat: Junior Triathalon. This initiative was developed
with the intent of introducing children ages 6 to 12 years of
age to the healthy lifestyle of triathletes. This event was very
successful with over 85 young aspiring athletes participating.
11

MEMBERSHIP
Again this year, one of the most notable accomplishments in a
struggling economy is that our Membership revenue continued
relatively strong in 2012, with a 2.4% increase over 2011. Our
programs draw families and our center continues to be a community
that others value.
We continued our Flex Start membership, with a minimum
commitment of 6 months that could be used for camp, which helped
to increase our camp revenue as well. Twenty-six percent of our new
or reactivated individuals or families chose this option, with 60% of
all Flex memberships being chosen by families. At year’s end, 63% of
those Flex memberships were still active.
Membership dollars support and sustain a full range of activities
including Sports & Wellness initiatives, Camp J offerings, Early
Childhood Education, rich cultural arts, educational lectures,
enrichment classes, and wonderful opportunities for socializing. The
ongoing evolution of the “Face of the J” in physical improvements,
program diversity, and a consistent marketing image, will continue
to make us the place where members want to stay a while, relax, and
connect with others.
12

The JCC gratefully acknowledges the following individuals, companies, organizations and
foundations for their support of our many programs and offerings. Membership dues are
not enough to maintain the excellent programming we enjoy, maintain the building we love
and serve the community. Donor support dollars bridge the gap and we thank the following
people for contributing to the success of the JCC. Gifts of $250 or more are listed below.
2012 FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS
We take pride in the many positive financial results
for JCC programs in 2012. Our Early Childhood
Department had a good year, as did our Summer
Camp and Special Needs Services Program. We were
able to fully fund the planned transfer into the Repair
& Replacement Fund in 2012 and make up a deficit in
funding Repair & Replacement from a previous year.
Contributions and fundraising fell short of budget, as
did our rental revenue.
We were able to give a small increment to our staff
2%
midyear, but the 401K match has not been reinstated.
We continue to fund a 401K 6% base 7% contribution.
A big thanks is owed to our donors, members,
volunteers and 11% staff who are continuing to make
the JCC a great place to be. The Harry and Jeanette
61%
Weinberg Endowment Fund provided $136,980 in
2012 for scholarships, and other endowments also
provided funding for scholarships and programs.
JCC scholarships and discounts in 2012 totaled over
$613,000. Scholarship needs continue to challenge our
available resources, although our endowments did grow
in 2012 primarily due to stock market increases.
