3.4 Objective 3 - Building stronger communities
Building stronger communities is multi-faceted. It seeks to improve the physical
environment, whilst addressing community needs and factors that lead to
deprivation and poverty.
In urban areas our work focuses on renewal
and estate–based strategy programmes,
supporting DSD’s urban regeneration
initiatives and providing strategic direction for
housing investment.
DSD is currently developing a
policy for ‘housing-led
regeneration’ to support
communities, renew town and city
centres and bring empty homes
back into use.
DSD has confirmed that funding for the
Neighbourhood Renewal Programme will
continue until 2015. We will work to deliver
this funding to the Neighbourhood Renewal
Area in Armagh, benefiting local
communities through a diverse range of
schemes.
Following public consultation we have recently begun implementation of the new
Rural Action Plan 2013-15. The plan contains over 50 actions which we will undertake
over the next two years. We intend to build on the success of the Rural Action Plan
2009-12 which saw targets for new build and Warm Homes exceeded. We will
continue to consult with our Rural Resident’s Forum to ensure any new policies are
rural proofed as well as scrutinizing existing services. The Rural Action Plan
demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering vibrant and sustainable rural
communities.
In Armagh City and District, we support physical and community regeneration
through a number of activities:
• We are represented on the Armagh Neighbourhood Renewal Area Partnership.
In cooperation with other statutory agencies and community representatives we
continue to deliver projects on behalf of residents. In the past year, schemes
delivered by the Housing Executive have included major refurbishments and fire
safety works to community facilities at Mullacreevie and Callan Crescent;
• We continue to support community development through the funding and
monitoring of Supporting Communities Northern Ireland which provides advice
and support to local community groups;
