UKHO CARTOGRAPHIC TRAINING
THE UK HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE
A major factor in the success of The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is the ongoing
provision of high quality training programmes. The recent rapid developments in digital
cartography and the production of both raster and vector digital products have further
increased the demand for UKHO training.
As a response to this demand, UKHO has developed a highly skilled and dedicated training
centre. The training officers have extensive operational experience and are able to call
upon other leading specialists, from a range of disciplines, to support the delivery of UKHO
training programmes.
The training offered includes Hydrographic Data Processing and Marine Cartography, ENC
Production, Chart Correction, Chart Awareness and Chart Plotting courses. Training delivery is
flexible and includes in country training and on site at UKHO. Training courses are tailored to
a variety of audiences including Hydrographic Offices, colleges and universities as well as the
wider marine related community.
In February 2005, UKHO received recognition for its cartographic training course from the
Fédération Internationale des Géomètres (FIG), International Hydrographic Organisation
(IHO), and the International Cartographic Association (ICA) Advisory Board through the
awarding of Category B accreditation at the IHO M8 Standard of Competence for Nautical
Cartographers.
The UKHO provides a variety of cartographic courses in support of our commitment to the
international capacity building programme. I look forward to meeting you.
UKHO CARTOGRAPHIC TRAINING
A BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE UNITED KINGDOM
HYDROGRAPHIC OFFICE
‘Charting the world for over 200 years’
The present work of the UKHO is built upon the long history and unstinting and dedicated
effort of over two centuries in hydrographic surveying and chart production. Famous names,
and many others who laboured unknown, have contributed to the unending worldwide effort
to chart the seas.
The first Hydrographer to the Admiralty, Alexander Dalrymple FRS, was appointed by order of
King George III in 1795. He set to work reviewing the difficulties and dangers to his Majesty’s
Fleet in the navigation of ships. Subsequent Hydrographers have continued to lead the world
in the techniques of surveying, hydrography and cartography.
As Britannia ruled the waves during the second half of the nineteenth century, the skills of
surveying and chart production were consolidated and world coverage increased. During the
twentieth century, the demands of two World Wars gave impetus to technical innovations in
instruments and surveying techniques.
In 2004, the Production Systems Programme (PSP) was initiated. This will provide, through a
series of projects over the coming years, a new integrated production system built around a
master hydrographic database capable of delivering an enhanced capability for the production
of hydrographic products and services.
Currently UKHO has approved a Bursary Scheme which will make a significant contribution to
the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) capacity building programme. The United
Kingdom Hydrographic Office currently holds ISO9001:2000 certification, including TickIT covering
IT aspects, and has its Investor in People status confirmed following a successful re-accreditation.
UKHO CARTOGRAPHIC TRAINING
ACCREDITATION
The UKHO has been recognised by the International Advisory Board as meeting its M8
Standard of Competence for Nautical Cartographers - Category B. The advisory board is jointly
constituted by the Fédération Internationale des Géomètres (FIG), International Hydrographic
Organisation (IHO), and the International Cartographic Association (ICA).
The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office was the first organisation in the world to gain the
FIG – IHO – ICA Category B in relation to its Hydrographic Data Processing and Marine
Cartography course with specialism The Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC).
The Category B status is awarded to programmes “which provide a practical comprehension of
nautical cartography for individuals with the skills to carry out routine nautical cartographic tasks”.
(M8 First Edition Standards of Competence for Nautical Cartographers)
All UKHO modules are designed to be highly participative with sessions followed up with
practical exercises.
The course is currently offered in a modular format:
● Marine Cartography
● Hydrographic Data Processing
● The Electronic Navigational Chart
Each module is of five weeks duration and students will be issued with a certificate of
attendance for each module. When delegates have successfully completed all three modules
they will be issued with a certificate of programme completion which states that:
This programme has been recognised as meeting the requirements for FIG/IHO/ICA
Standards of Competence for Nautical Cartographers, at the Category B level, with Specialism
The Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC).
