Third Antenna System
Approved for NYC
NEW YORK — Mayor Wagner has
authorized CATV Enterprises to go ahead
with its projected operations of a community
antenna television service in the
Riverdale section of the Bronx after having
previously ordered its franchise "held
in abeyance" pending further study of the
city of its qualifications. Unanimous approval
by the Board of Estimates previouslyhad
been given CATV Enterprises, along
with Sterling Information Services and
TelePrompTer Corp.. which will operate
in Manhattan.
Maxwell Lehman, first deputy administrator,
and Seymour N. Siegel, director of
communications of the Municipal Broadcasting
System, reported favorably on
CATV Enterprises. The three franchises
granted by the city permit a $19.50 installation
fee and a $5 monthly charge during
a two-year experimental period. Net profits
are limited to seven per cent.
The three CATV companies will be the
first to operate in a major city. Since Manhattan
residents have had difficulty getting
the best TV reception on some channels
due to signal interference from numerous
high rise buildings the service is
expected to have a ready market.
