Glossary
sort code A character in the job input data that is used to activate the
sort control relay when detected by the system controller. The asterisk (*)
and double asterisk (**) characters are commonly used as sort codes.
sort control relay An output relay that is used to create a physical
break in the line of printed documents, increase the speed of another line
of documents, or activate a sort function on finishing equipment.
substrate The surface on which an image is printed. The substrate can
be a continuous sheet (web) or separate pieces of various types of
material.
surface energy A measure of how reactive a particular substrate is to
fluid. Substrates with a high surface energy are porous and have lower
surface tension, causing fluids to soak into the substrate. Substrates with
a low surface energy are less porous and have a higher surface tension,
causing fluids to bead on the surface of the substrate.
system controller The component of a printing system that accepts
input data from disk, CD-ROM, or a network drive. The system controller
then formats the data according to job setup instructions and sends
character-coded image data to the data main board. The system
controller is the primary operator interface to the printing system.
tach 1. A measure of distance, as measured by the tach encoder. 2. A
signal emitted by the tach encoder in response to the speed of the
substrate.
tach encoder A part that detects movement of the substrate and
generates tach pulses in relationship to the substrate movement.
test pattern An image that is designed to test the various
characteristics of a printer along with the interactions of the ink, paper,
and printing speed used.
umbilical The part of the print station that carries ink and signals
between the fluid cabinet and the printhead through an assembly of
hoses and wiring within a flexible, protective shield.
UV Ultraviolet. The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in which
the longest wavelength is just below the visible spectrum, extending from
approximately 4 nm to approximately 400 nm.
UV ink
In printing, solventless inks that are cured by UV radiation.
