Assisted living options in senior
housing continue to grow, and consumers
often feel overwhelmed
by the many choices available.
According to law, consumers can
expect any senior housing and
service provider offering “assisted
living” services to offer, at minimum,
the following services:
• Two daily meals;
• Weekly housekeeping services;
• Weekly laundry services;
• Assistance in arranging transportation
to medical & social
service appointments;
• Assistance in accessing community
resources & social services;
• Health related services must
include assistance with selfadministration
of medications, or
administration of medications, &
these services must be supervised
by a Registered Nurse available to
consult with staff 24-7;
Most assisted living providers will
offer more services in addition to
those listed above. Consumers looking
for assisted living can now expect
all assisted living providers in Minnesota
to offer at least these services.
If you are looking for assisted living
services, carefully consider the
types of services you need and are
likely to need in the future. A registered
nurse (RN) can help evaluate
your needs. When you are seriously
considering moving to an assisted
living setting with services, the provider
will offer to have an RN assess
your needs and develop a proposed
service plan to meet those needs.
This plan will provide you with information
on the services you could
expect to receive from the assisted
living program and the cost. Consumers
may also find it helpful to
talk to the county Long-Term Care
Consultation staff who can also help
evaluate service needs and options.
When looking for assisted living services,
the housing provider must
provide information on available
services, costs, what is included
in rent and additional charges, the
building’s residency requirements
and other useful information as you
decide which senior development
is right for you. Read all information
carefully, visit the building several
times if possible, talk to current residents
and staff and make sure your
questions are answered before you
make an important moving decision.
If you need help starting your search
for assisted living, the following section
of the SENIOR HOUSING DI-
RECTORY will provide information
on assisted living providers in the
11-county metropolitan area. If you
have questions or need assistance,
call the Senior LinkAge Line at 1-800-
333-2433. An assisted living checklist
to use as you visit assisted living providers
is found under the “consumer”
section at www.mhha.com.
