Taking the Sting Out of Moving Day “I want to move. I need to move. But with so many arrangements to be made, people to contact, and belongings to deal with, where do I begin?” Many seniors have no trouble entertaining the idea of living in one of the many housing options available for older adults throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Many feel it is time to scale down and move to a smaller place, perhaps closer to their children and extended family. But once the decision to move is made, it is not always easy for older adults to pull up roots. Between the emotional aspects of leaving a home of many years, increasing health issues, downsizing and the task of sifting through years of accumulated “treasures,” the task of making the move itself can be nothing short of daunting! So, how does one take the sting out of the moving process? The key is to begin planning much sooner than later and to utilize the many resources available that support one’s path to a successful and accomplished moving day. Senior move management is a growing industry. Older adults and their families appreciate a moving expert...someone who can deal with the many details and pull together the necessary resources required to downsize a home and accomplish a smooth transition. Call for a free estimate. • Inquire about years of service, insurance and bonding. • Confirm moving date and movein criteria (e.g. use of elevator/ garage/where to put moving refuse) with your new residence. Your Floor Plan is Your GUIDE • Acquire your new floor plan. • In addition, measure your new place by hand. Inches can make a difference on move day, and snags may cost you $$$ in the end. • Create a design layout of the furnishings you plan to move into your new home. Bring only those items that will realistically fit. Excess causes unsafe layouts and undue stress on the receiving end. Sorting • Assess your new lifestyle by asking yourself if you will you be eating meals in your apartment; entertaining; providing your own maintenance; or using housekeeping services? These answers can eliminate bringing unnecessary items. • Break the sorting of possessions into manageable tasks (e.g. closets first). • To conserve space, try to select furniture that might serve a dual function. • Use colored stickers to mark and identify which items go and which do not. This allows you to see progress, room completion AND helps direct the movers on moving day. • Make all your sorting decisions BEFORE the movers arrive.
