Elder Law (continued) “What You Don’t Know About Elder Law Just Might Hurt You” Long-term care planning is important because the high cost of long-term care can ultimately impoverish an individual and/or couple. Situations of declining health are emotionally stressful for the senior and the family, but just as stressful is the overwhelming frustration experienced when trying to navigate through unchartered and confusing territories of our health care system… especially when the need for long-term care comes to fruition suddenly. Seniors and family members may ask: How are we going to afford this care? What will Medicare and/or Medicaid cover if anything? Should mom pay her children for administrative management of her finances or should she transfer assets to her children? All of these questions, when acted upon, have legal outcomes which can dramatically affect one’s long-term care situation and Estate. More important than the legal and financial component of long-term care planning is the well-being of the senior and, therefore, the environment of their long-term care situation. Families should ask ‘What care situation is best for mom now and in the future?’ An elder law attorney can offer suggestions based on mom’s needs or utilize the service of a Geriatric Care Manager (employed by law firm or independent). A Geriatric Care Manager, based on their comprehensive knowledge of the senior care industry, provides professional and high quality care planning and supervision. They consider the situation as well as the senior’s and family’s needs to ensure the best agencies and housing options are presented to the family so to arrive at the best long-term care outcome for mom. Finally, an elder law attorney practices not only the legal approaches detailed above, but also offers knowledge, patience and understanding regarding the aging process and myths associated with the same. Aquatic Therapy “Water Does Wonders” Physical therapy performed in water, known as aquatic therapy, is becoming increasingly popular. Aquatic therapy is performed by specially trained physical therapists in a warm water pool setting. It is prescribed by doctors, on an inpatient or outpatient basis, for athletes, seniors and people with special and specific health conditions. Aquatic therapy is based on physical therapy research showing movement and exercises performed in warm, soothing water promote healing and strength throughout the body. Research shows that warm water relaxes muscles and improves blood flow to affected areas of the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. It is water’s buoyancy and resistance that is particularly helpful for those who are unable or find it painful to bear weight as required in physical therapy “on land.” Instead of utilizing weight, aquatic therapy utilizes the resistance of water to gently redevelop and rehabilitate weaknesses in individual bodies. Water’s buoyancy supports and balances the body as exercises and movements are performed. Some therapy pools incorporate saltwater instead of chlorinated water to aid in buoyancy as well as to cater to those with chlorine sensitivities. the body for harder weight bearing therapy out of the water or “on land.” Most aquatic therapy pools are specifically designed with features that promote access and safety. Some have stairs, ramps or special lifts into the pool, instead of ladders, for handicapped and wheelchair bound individuals. Also, most include handrails and non-skid surfaces surrounding the pool area. Aquatic therapy pools may also include massage jets, treadmills and flotation devices which allow therapists to design regimens specific to each person’s needs. While aquatic therapy’s popularity is growing, there are not many therapy pools in the Twin Cities. However, as awareness continues to evolve, so does the community’s demand. Some locations with aquatic therapy pools in the greater metropolitan area are Sister Kenny, Courage Center, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, TRIA, Martin Luther Care Center, Presbyterian Homes Bloomington and Arden Hills, Augustana Apple Valley Care Center, Jones-Harrison, Summit Place Assisted Living, Sholom East Campus and Medical Pain Clinics (MAPS). If you or your doctor thinks you could benefit from aquatic therapy, request a referral or prescription from your doctor. In most cases, aquatic therapy is covered by medical insurance and Medicare Part B.
