Disposing of Unwanted Items
• Do your research ahead. Some
options include: estate sales, consignment,
donations, family, libraries,
charitable organizations, recycling,
internet, dumpster or county recyclable/hazardous
waste sites.
Packing
• Separate packing from decisionmaking.
Doing both simultaneously
can become laborious.
• If you are not using a move management
service, recruit friends
and family to help the process go
quickly and efficiently.
• To avoid stress, complete your
packing in advance of moving day.
• Get quality supplies which will
make your job much easier (i.e.
boxes, packing paper, bubble
wrap, packing tape, labels, etc.).
• Place detailed labels on the top
AND on the front of each box so,
when stacked, they are easily
identifiable.
Unpacking
• Try to have the same packing
crew unpack you. They will better
know how you like your items (e.g.
hutch) and areas (e.g. closets)
arranged.
• Plan ahead for discarding boxes,
packing paper and misc. trash
since not all dumpsters or trash
shoots accommodate large loads.
• Assign the details to someone on
your moving crew (i.e. picture
hanging, bed making, computer
set-up, putting clothes away,
screwing bulbs in lamps, setting
clocks, etc.). These details make
your house livable and homey.
• Complete the mail forwarding
packet from the local post office
7-10 days prior to your move.
• Pack an overnight bag for the last
night in your residence. It might
include essential toiletries, night
clothing, clothes for moving day,
coat, food for the morning, medications
and/or night-light. This
eliminates important items getting
packed by mistake.

All the Essentials to Make it Easier.
• Brew strong coffee to start the day.
• Carry jewelry, telephone/address
book, checkbook, information on
your new residence, keys, documents,
prescription medication
and TV remote control on your
person on moving day. Include
the means (e.g. cash, check, travelers
checks) to cover the cost of
both expected and unexpected
necessary expenses, moving
services, etc.
• Make sure you have made accommodations
to transport pets, plants
and yourself.
• Double-check all closets, drawers
and shelves to assure nothing
gets left behind in the move.
Order dinner the first evening in your
new residence. Sit back, relax and
take in and enjoy your new, sweet
home.
