Dear Copley High School families,
Congratulations to all of our students for completing another year at Copley High School! I thank all of our parents,
students, and staff members for your support throughout the school year. It has been a successful year.
This year has brought us a myriad of successes. We have worked as a school to implement high expectations for students
both in and out of the classroom. We have promoted good character and strived for academic excellence. Our students
have delivered in both categories. This is evident in the reduction of disciplinary referrals throughout the year and the
academic successes we have celebrated. The climate we continue to develop allows us to implement new programs that
will carry into the next school year.
Next year we will be offering more academic support to all students through our RTI (Response To Intervention) team.
The RTI team consists of a guidance counselor, administrator, teachers, and sometimes parents. The focus of the group is
to identify students that are struggling academically and/or socially within the building and to provide them with
interventions to help them be successful. Possible interventions include Academic Enrichment, study groups, Study
Tables, and/or individual classroom modifications or plans.
The high school curriculum will be elevated through additional course offerings and expansion of the curriculum. Chinese
II, Forensics, Conceptual Chemistry and Physics, AP Economics, AP Music Theory, AP Statistics, and Music History are
new course offerings for the 2010-2011 school year. Teachers have spent this past school year mapping their curriculum
for all classes. This will allow them to identify key standards that are covered throughout the year. The maps will aid them
in making adjustments to the curriculum to better meet the needs of the students. Teachers have been utilizing data from
course tests, the OGT, and the Practice OGT to identify and meet students’ needs. This will continue and be expanded
next year.
We have made great strides in increasing school and community pride. Our student driven School Spirit Club has
remained strong throughout this past school year. We currently have more than 60 students involved in the organization.
They are having an impact on our building through promoting our school’s and students’ accomplishments. The club was
responsible for organizing and planning all of our pep assemblies and spirit weeks throughout this school year. I am
looking forward to their leadership continuing into next school year.
The programs and initiatives I have discussed above are only glimpses of the progress we have made throughout this year
and will continue forward into next school year. I am proud of our students and staff. They have done an outstanding job
ensuring that Copley High School remains a top school in the state.
I would like to extend a special thank you and congratulations to our seniors. You and your parents can be proud of your
journey over the past 13 years. Your accomplishments have molded you into the adults you are today. Embrace your
experiences, both good and bad, and grow from them. You all have left your mark on Copley High School and it has left
one on you. For this you can be proud. Good luck to all of you as you begin your new journey in life.
Have a happy and safe summer!
Sincerely,
Aaron Sable
PSAT & PLAN TEST PLANNING FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)
will be given to tenth and eleventh grade students on October 13, 2010 at CHS. Students planning to take the
SAT should take the 2010 PSAT/NMSQT this October. The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal and mathematical
reasoning and writing skills, making it an excellent preparation for the SAT. The PSAT/NMSQT will provide
students with personalized feedback on college success skills that will be tested on the SAT.
The PLAN Test will be given to tenth grade students on November 9, 2010. The content of the PLAN
test is closely tied to that of the achievement tests in the ACT Assessment, which is broadly used for college
entrance and placement decisions. The curriculum-based tests cover the skills and knowledge that are commonly
taught in the nation’s schools and are judged to be important for success in both high school and college. Tests
measure what students know and what they are able to do with their knowledge.
TEST INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE IN THE GUIDANCE OFFICE: (330) 664-4827
great time at this memorable, drug and alcohol free event.
After Prom would not be possible without the generous
donations made by senior parents and local businesses as
Barnes & Noble BookFair Fundraiser
Cheryl Wells, Chairperson
Our dabbling into a new form of Barnes & Noble fundraiser was a success earning about $200 for AfterProm. The BookFair enabled
students to purchase their required reading without ever going to the store. The pre-ordered books have been received and delivered
to students at school. We'd like to thank both the high school and middle school office staff for helping with the collection of order forms
and the distribution of books to students. We'd also like to thank the teachers who made their reading lists available to us. Barnes &
Noble has offered to run the program again in the fall for required reading needed during the school year. Watch Smoke Signals for
information. As always, thanks for your support of CHS PTSA.
COPLEY MUSIC BOOSTERS
Hello Music Boosters and Friends,
It is so hard to believe that another school year has come and gone. The Music Boosters have had a wonderful and
successful year with loads of fun and memories to share. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to such an
outstanding year. It takes many volunteers and lots of funds to make such a large organization grow and move. I
would like to extend a very special thank you to Mr. Kochan, Mr. Foster, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Cuilla for providing
such an excellent program and for teaching all of our students such outstanding music. I know that I speak for all
the students, parents, and others of the Copley Music Family when I say that we truly appreciate all of the time,
energy, thought and dedication that you give to your students and their families each and every day of the year.
Through your efforts, you are truly enriching our children's education and their lives and for that we
wholeheartedly thank you.
Looking forward to next year, the Boosters are still growing. We are very pleased to announce that families of the
Copley Fairlawn Middle School will be encouraged, recruited and included on a much larger scale to help with all of
the Music Program volunteer and financial needs. Nikki Cox has graciously agreed to be our new Middle School
liaison and she will be working with Mrs. Cuilla as well as coordinating parent volunteers to help with fundraisers,
volunteer opportunities, and other programs. Several other Middle School parents have accepted a role in the
Booster program as well. Thanks to Debbi Spangler for agreeing to coordinate the Citrus sale. Debbi has a sixth
grade band student. And many thanks to Marcie Supelak who will be our new web site coordinator. Marcie also
has a sixth grade band student. While so many aspects of volunteering in the schools as your student moves along
seem to dwindle, the Boosters are here to say we need you now more than ever so come on in! We hope you will
consider joining in on the fun and getting involved with the Boosters!
I hope that everyone has a safe and relaxing summer filled with good memories and lots of family time together. I
also hope that you will all come back to school in the fall, beginning with the first football game, ready to jump
right in and help with financial and volunteer commitments. Not only is volunteering a great way to be involved in
what your students are doing, but it is also a wonderful way to meet new friends, provide a huge service and
benefit to a group that could really use your help, and keep your own student involved in a group of outstanding
peers. Please feel free to check out the web site or to call or email anyone on the Board and sign up to help. We
generally only regret the things in life we didn't do rather than the things we did.
Look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Sincerely,
COPLEY ADULT ALL SPORTS BOOSTER CLUB
THANK YOU FOR YOUR
SUPPORT!
To Everyone:
On behalf of the Copley Adult All Sports Booster Club Board Members, I
wanted to extend my gratitude and thanks to community members, parents,
teachers, administrators, staff and students for their support of the various
fundraisers and activities sponsored by the Booster Club throughout the
course of the year.
Each and every year we are able to achieve our goal through your generous
support. Monies raised from our fundraisers enable us to supplement
the Athletic Department’s budget by providing uniforms, equipment,
awards, and the like. This year we are pleased to be sponsoring ImPACT,
a research-based computer test developed to help clinicians evaluate an
athlete’s recovery following concussion. Every Copley student/athlete will
be screened and provided a baseline. If a concussion is diagnosed, Im-
PACT can help answer difficult questions about an athlete’s readiness to
return to play, protecting them from the potentially serious consequences of
returning too soon. Safety is the number one priority for our student/
athletes.
We invite you to join us as a board member or to be a member of one of
our committees. Please feel free to contact me at 330.812.4738, I would
be happy to discuss the possibilities!
I am looking forward to next school year—2010/2011. Again, many thanks
for your support.
Sincerely,
