Secondary School Weekly Bulletin Monday 14 th November– Volume 1, Issue 8 In the early 1930s, two events destroyed people's belief in the ability of the League of Nations to stop wars. In both situations, the League did not act quickly enough or made poor decisions about how to suppress the aggressor nations, in this case Italy and Japan. This served to show that smaller countries could not expect protection from the League and that aggressors (such as Hitler) had nothing to stand in their way. These two crises were Manchuria and Abyssinia. This week, our year 10 students have been researching about this topic and presented their results to the class on Wednesday. Congratulations to Aidan Munro for having delivered the best presentation. Well done Aidan! Mr. F. Marcos – Head of Humanities WORLD SCIENCE DAY: THE GREAT BALLOON RELEASE! Edited by: Mr. C. Marchand - Head of Secondary This week in Ciencias Sociales, year 8 students have studied how landscapes change depending on the climate of any given region of the Earth. Knowing about climate is fundamental as it affects the fauna and flora, as well as people´s way of life. Every student successfully created a model landscape and presented their work to their peers, with PowerPoint to illustrate their words. All students involved had a great time completing this project and the visual impact of their endproducts was outstanding. Well done Year 8! Miss M. Martin - Spanish Department Year 8 students are continuing their studies of the work of the sea by looking at the problem of cliff erosion and the effect that it can have on people’s lives. They are currently producing a newspaper styled article describing and explaining how one village is gradually disappearing into the sea and suggesting how residents might feel about it. It is hoped that the quality of work will be suitable for display for other students and adults to read. They will then be looking at the problem of beach erosion, an issue which Costa del Sol resorts have to deal with. Mr. J. Hill – Humanities Department MATHS OLYMPIADS: THE LAUDE DREAM TEAM The Maths Department has selected its participants in the 2 nd Maths Olympiad, which will be hosted here at Laude on Thursday 24 th November. We are looking forward to seeing Dennis Bruggink, Carlos Aguado, Itziar Pomares, Natalia Mirón and Kalina Benhamou competing alongside students from another 7 schools along the Costa in a series of Mathematical Challenges. Secondary School Weekly Bulletin Monday 14 th November– Volume 1, Issue 8 Inter Schools Girls Football FLA NEWS KARATE KIDS Tournament Sensei Miguel Rodriguez 5 th Dan in Shotokan, brought the martial art of karate to the Year 7’s this week. He was both professional and friendly, delivering highly efficient and powerful applications to our students. The start of the week saw dark clouds gathering across the sky, which soon rolled down into huge drops of rain. Yet fortunately on Wednesday 16 November perfect weather when the intense tournament began. The U/13, U/15 and U/19 girls’ football tournament kicked off to a great start in Sotogrande. Thanks to the Friends of Laude Association, and to Mrs. C. in particular, The 6 th Form now boasts a fully furnished, “sate of the art” common room: The FLA donated 4 large sofas, coffee tables and lamps, all contributing to creating an inviting, comfortable working environment for our Senior Students to study in. Our boys and girls delivered some impressive kicks and punches ending the movements with a booming kiai, better known as the spirit shout. The Karate class provided the children with an opportunity to understand a form of self defense in a fun and constructive way. Miss O. Garcia - Head of PE The girls battled their way in all the matches, as there were many participating schools. There were some wins, draws and losses, yet all the matches were played with great intensity and enthusiasm. The girls had an exhilarating time, with many showing superb skills and competitive spirit. A special congratulation goes to Hannah Carson, Lara Satli and Claudia Cummins who showed brilliant individual performance and team work. Miss O.
