2.0 SCHOOL INFORMATION
‘The administration of the child embodies certain norms about their capabilities from
which the child can become self-governing and self-reliant’
(Popkewitz, 1998)
2.1 Beginning of School Year
In the Secondary School our academic year 2010-2011 begins on Wednesday 1st September. On the 30th and
31 st August the school will be open from 10.00am until 12.00pm for students and their parents who wish to
come in to meet their teachers. These mornings are optional, non-uniform days and are designed to facilitate
the general return to school on Wednesday. We all look forward to welcoming you!
2.2 The School Day
The School Day is from 8.50 to 16.15.
The School is officially opens from 8.30am. Students should then proceed directly to the red playground and,
from 8.45am, may enter the Main Building to access their lockers.
Students register with their tutors at 8.50am. Those arriving after 8.50am will be marked absent and need to
sign in at Reception and inform their tutors that they are in school.
It is important that your child, or children, make the most of their time at school. This means regular
attendance and punctuality, habits that in the future will be valued by other educational estabilishments and
employers. The beginning of the day is when announcements are made that have impact on the whole school
community, and we look forward to every students being fully informed, in order to contribute fully and
valuably to the growth of the school.
If your child is ill, please telephone 952.799.900 or email the office info@laudesanpedro.com to let us know.
2.3 Absences
Parents have a legal responsibility to make sure their children attend school regularly.
Attendance is a key part of ensuring improved attainment and positive life outcomes. In the UK, the
Department for Children, Schools and Families recommends that the minimum requirement for attendance
should be 93%. Attainment is central to social inclusion and has a major impact on a child’s future
opportunities. Attendance, attainment and attitude are all key to raising standards in any school, and
improving the aspirations of young people.
The primary responsibility for ensuring that children and young people attend school regularly rests with
parents and carers. Promoting attendance and tackling non-attendance is the responsibility of the school, as is
the creation of personalized learning and the creation of an environment in which young people want to
engage. Parents and the school must work together robustly to ensure each student’s maximum attendance.
3

Term-time holidays are a particular contributory factor to non-attendance. Our school’s expectation is that
students only miss school when it is absolutely unavoidable; letters from parents explaining absences due to
sickness should be addressed to the tutor. Should it be absolutely necessary to take your child out of school
during term time, please make your formal written request to Rhian Saadat (r.saadat@laudesanpedro.com)
stating the dates and reason for the absence. Each request will be considered individually, taking into account
the following criteria:
 Personal circumstances of the request
 Age of student
 Overall attendance of student
The time of year holiday is proposed and whether it impacts on specific curricular or community issues
The student’s stage of education and general progress.
Approval for any absence can be given by the school for up to ten days in any school year, and is
discretionary. Any leave of absence cannot be granted retrospectively and any absence without permission will
therefore be recorded as unauthorized.
Students absent more than 15% of the school year will progress to the following year at the Head’s discretion.
2.4 Truancy
If you have any suspicion that your son or daughter is not attending school please contact the school
immediately. Promoting school attendance is paramount in ensuring the importance of education.
2.5 Parking
Parents are requested to observe the municipal signs and regulations regarding parking and waiting outside
school. For safety reasons, you must not enter the school bus parking area and or park in double lines outside
the school. Please drive extremely slowly and carefully when in the vicinity of the school.
2.6 Change of Arrangements or Personal Details
It is important for your child’s safety that you inform us of any change in their pick-up or school transport
arrangements. Please inform Reception in plenty of time, either by telephone, in writing or by email.
If there is any change to your address, email or telephone number, please ensure that the office is informed.
It may be necessary to contact you urgently, in the case of illness or injury, so mobile phone numbers and
emergency contact phone numbers should also be made available to the school and be kept updated.
Together with familiarity of the school’s ethos, we will require all secondary students to sign contracts for the
safe and appropriate use of both the Internet and Science facilties.
2.9 School House System
The school has a vertical House system and many interschool activities are planned throughout the year, in
order to involve and cater for as many students as possible (Sports, Maths Day, Red Nose, Enterprise Day,
etc). The four Houses are:
All students are allocated to a House and receive house points for positive contributions to the school, through
their hard work, and participation in a wide range of activities.
The school aims to recognize excellence in all its forms, and to include effort and progress, as well as
persistent brilliance!
2.10 School Charity
As part of the school’s desire to involve students actively in the community, some activities during the year
aim to raise money for charity. Our chosen charities will be announced later in the year.
3.0 SERVICES
3.1 Dining Hall
All students have their lunch cooked freshly on the premises by experienced catering staff. There is one sitting
in the dining hall, for years 7 to 13 from 13.35 to 14.35.
and students requiring this option must inform the School Nurse at the start of the school year. The monthly
menu appears on our website www.laudesanpedro.com and is updated every month once it has been
approved by the Menu Committee which parents are welcome to attend. Please see dates in the school
calendar.
replace lost books and school diaries. All textbooks must be returned at the end of the school year or a fee will
be charged.
3.4 Illnesses / Rules and Advice
It is normal that students will, from time to time, contract viral, bacterial or other illnesses. In cases where
the possibility of contagion exists, the affected student must not attend school, for their own sake and for that
of classmates. A doctor’s letter is required.
5

You are asked to inform the School Nurse of any medical conditions likely to affect your child at school (eg
allergies, asthma, heart conditions, sight or hearing problems etc) and to provide any necessary medications
such as inhaler for asthma, Epipen for serious allergies, clearly labeled with your child’s name, along with
clear written instructions for their use.
Should your child need, on occasion, to bring medication to school, this should be given to the School Nurse
clearly labeled with their name and with written instructions indicating the exact dose, times and method of
administration. All medication must be sent with the accompanying spoon or measuring container.
If your child is taken ill or has suffered an accident of any note whilst at school, you will be informed
immediately. You will be informed of any head injury, regardless of its severity. Should it be deemed
necessary, your child will be taken directly to the accident department of the local health centre or hospital,
accompanied by a member of staff. The School Nurse is available throughout the school day but it remains
understood that the nurse cannot, and should not, take on the role as the child’s doctor at any time, nor can
she be expected to elave school to go to hospital with a student.
4.0 UNIFORM
We are proud of our school uniform and want our students to look smart and to take pride in their personal
appearance. We expect correct uniform to be worn at all times and ask for your fullest co-operation in
upholding the standard of uniform and appearance in the Secondary School.
The official uniform is that of Colegios Laude, detailed below. All pupils are expected to adhere strictly to the
uniform code and to wear their shirts tucked in. Shoes should be traditional black or navy school shoes.
No other types of footwear, including black gym shoes and ballerina style, are permitted at any time. The
ballerina-style shoe lacks support for growing feet and do not provide the necessary grip on school flooring.
Skirts should be at knee-length.
Uniform items may be tried on, purchased/ordered from the Uniform Shop in the Secondary School.
4.1 Official Uniform
other piercings, with their uniform. Nail varnish and make-up are NOT allowed. A watch is permitted but must
be removed for PE.
6

We insist that long hair is worn tied back, so that it does not get in the way in class or on the playground. Hair
bands, ribbons, slides, elastics etc should be discreet and navy blue in colour.
If a student arrives in school incorrectly dressed, they will be asked to remedy the situation immediately,
either by correcting their appearance independently, or returning home to dress properly. Should the problem
persist, parents will be contacted to discuss the problem. If you are having difficulty obtaining items of
uniform, please notify us.
All items of uniform, including socks, shoes, trainers etc must be clearly marked with the student’s name.
4.4 Sixth Form Dress
Those students studying in Laude’s Sixth Form are not required to wear school uniform, although our
expectations are that older students preparing for university and working life will maintain the highest
standards of dress and good grooming. For this reason, we do nor permit jeans or gym shoes of any kind, and
any items of clothing displaying logos and ‘messages’ are also not permitted. Hair styles are expected to
remain appropriate and in keeping with sensible clothing, and no body piercing will be tolerated. As for
uniform, any sixth former not respecting the school’s dress code will be required to attend to their appearance
before resuming their studies.
5.0 REPORTING TO PARENTS
Laude San Pedro International College aims to provide detailed reporting to parents, and both formative and
summative assessment are administered in order to give as rounded a view as possible of each student’s
academic and social development. The school also actively encourages student reflection on their learning,
and each student’s involvement in individualized target setting with regular reviewing by tutors and teachers.
All students in Years 7 – 13 receive detailed termly academic Reports with tutor comments.
The dates of parents’ evenings and the issuing of reports can be found in the school diary.
6.0 HOME/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION
We believe it is very important to continue the good home/school relationships developed in the Primary
school - school/parent relationships that will remain supportive and constructive as students progress in their
school careers. To achieve the best results it is important that the family and the school work together
towards the same common objectives.
6.1 Rules & Advice
At the beginning of the year, tutors will give a homework diary to each student. Please use the diaries to
inform us of anything that you wish us to know. We ask parents to sign the diary every weekend so we can be
certain that all teacher notes have been read.
6.2 Appointments
If you have any concerns about classes or progress you should make an appointment to see your son or
daughter’s tutor in the first instance. Each Head of Key Stage will have time set aside every week for parental
meetings. Parents who wish to arrange such a meeting should organize an appointment in advance by
contacting the School Secretary by email to: info@laudesanpedro.com or by telephone on 952.799.900.
6.3 Parent Information Meetings
A Parent Information Meeting for the whole school is held soon after the beginning of the Autumn Term. This
is an opportunity for the Head and Teachers to introduce themselves, explain important routines and outline
the year’s curriculum. Also available at these meetings are members of the Secondary Management Team,
including the Directora Tecnica (Head of the Spanish section).
6.4 Parents’ Evenings
Parents’ evenings are held for each Key Stage in the school. These meetings take place on the ground floor of
the Secondary School, in room C17. They last from 16.30 to 18.00. Please refer to the school diary for these
dates.
7

Should parents want to consult any member or members of staff on the progress of their children at any time
during the school year, they are welcome to do so and should contact the School office so that a convenient
time may be organized with the tutor or teacher. If you need a translator, please inform Reception in advance.
7.0 GENERAL RULES
7.1 Standards
A high standard of conduct and good manners is expected of all students both in and out of school. A breach
of good manners or common sense and any conduct liable to lower the reputation of the school will be treated
7.4 Drugs and Smoking Policy
Laude San Pedro has a zero tolerance policy for any type of drugs including tobacco, alcohol and illegal
legislation.
7.5 Equal Opportunities Policy
In our international school it is important to be aware of the sensitivities of cultural and ethnic groups.
Behaviour which could be construed as offensive to such groups will not be tolerated.
7.6 Valuables
Students are discouraged from bringing items of value to school. The use of mobile phones is prohibited within
the school premises. Anyone bringing phones to school should keep it locked in their lockers. Should parents
wish to contact their children during the course of the school day they may phone the school reception. All
essential valuables should be secured in a student’s locker. During lessons such as PE, students should hand
their valuables to the teacher for safekeeping. At no time should items of value or money be left unattended,
anywhere. Should parents wish to inform the school that their child has a particular valuable in school, they
9

9.0 THE PILLARS OF THE SCHOOL
9.1 English and Spanish Languages
Living in Spain and following a British Education, there is still the possibility of combining both Secondary
Spanish certificates: “Graduado en Educación Secundaria” and “Bachillerato”, and with this possibility at Laude
San Pedro, students have an extraordinary opportunity. Although the main teaching language is English, we
are committed to promoting Spanish throughout the school. Alongside the British Curriculum which includes
Spanish MFL, the school also offers the Spanish Curriculum for native/fluent Spanish speakers.
9.2 Values
We want to work alongside each family to ensure that our students grow up with a set of values that will serve
them well in their future lives. Education in values is not a separate lesson but forms part of the “hidden
curriculum” which is delivered through all subjects and all areas, throughout everything we do. Laude San
Pedro is a growing community of shakers and movers, and we aim to provide a wide range of activities and
events in which students can immerse themselves and explore their potential. A regular Student Council will
also serve to help us build the values of the school, through the students themselves taking an active part in
reflecting on what we do well, and what can be done to further development of values.
9.3 Information and Communication Technology
We know how important it is to provide our students with good ICT skills. The Secondary School possesses
two fully equipped Computer Suites as well as computers in our beautiful Library. Students throughout the
school are encouraged to use computers for research and Secondary students are able to sit IGCSE, AS and A
Level examinations in ICT and Applied ICT.
9.4 Sports
Physical Education is fundamental to our overall development. Through PE lessons, students’ awareness of
sport in general is developed, together with an understanding of the importance of a healthy life style and
diet. Sport plays a central role within the school’s House system, nurturing a sense of competitiveness and
team spirit of the best kind.
For these reasons it is important that all students participate in PE lessons, unless there is a very good reason
for not doing so. Parents are asked to write a note to the PE teacher in their child’s school diary if he or she is
not taking part in a PE lesson for any reason, detailing the reason.
FINALLY…
This handbook is not a complete view of all that is accomplished in any typical school day; as parents, you are
the most vital ingredient in the success of your child, and in the success of our school. We encourage you to
give feedback on this handbook, in order that we might develop its contents for everyone’s benefit. We
encourage you to come and see us whenever you have a spare moment, or whenever we advertise events
that would benefit from your participation. You will always be very welcome!
Thank you,
