and hopefully discovering that
geography is involved in all aspects of
our lives.

The Maths department has been
busily selecting our top Maths
students in Years 9-11 to take part in
the UKMT Intermediate Maths
Challenge on Thursday 2nd
February. This multiple-choice
question paper is taken by some 3700
schools and success in the
challenge can lead to entry to further
competitions, namely Olympiad and
Kangaroo papers and can even lead as
far as representing the country in an
International Maths Olympiad. As well
as the fun of taking part, involvement
in these sorts of competitions provide
valuable experiences that will stand
students in good stead when, for
example, they apply for university.

On Tuesday the whole of year 10 and
year 11, along with year 12 Business
Studies students, visited the Coca-
Cola factory in Málaga. They
watched a presentation on the history
of Coca-Cola and learnt about how
the bottles in the Málaga factory are
produced. They also got to see the
automated bottling of Coca-Cola in
action. A glass of Coca-Cola was then
enjoyed by all, before receiving their
complimentary caps and bags – which
students modelled beautifully!

Department
Spring term is fieldwork season and
students from years 10, 11 and the
sixth form will be able to escape
from the classroom to carry out some
practical activities in the local area.
This will enable them to answer
questions in their examinations which
ask students how they investigate
aspects of their environment. Letters
will be sent out shortly with details of
Thursday the 10 th of November 2011
was World Science Day and as a way
to recognize the importance of
Science in the world, the students at
Laude San Pedro International
College released 200 helium filled
balloons into the sky. The tag
attached to the balloons gave an
email address for the finders to email
the school stating when and where
the balloons were found. From the
results the Year 11 Students used the
data to work out the distance
travelled and the time between each
balloon find. The students are now
working on the speed the balloons
travelled at using the formula: Speed
= distance/time.
Part of the IGCSE course in Science
requires the student to look at data,
construct graphs and be able to use
their skills to evaluate the experiment
being carried out. Our year 11
student’s analyzed the data and
evaluated the results. They looked for
anomalous results and how they

could repeat the experiment and
gather data with better effect next

In music, Year 9 we were busy
composing songs. This time they
were looking at pop songs. Click on
the link below to listen to one of the
song by one of the groups.
Miss O´Reilly – Arts Department
Our interactive whiteboard allows us
to use some excellent ‘Active Teach’
software when delivering English
Literature lessons. We find that these
resources are invaluable when
teaching J. B. Priestly’s An Inspector
Calls and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice
and Men. Students are captivated
with contextual images and audio
recordings of key quotes and points,
alongside the electronic text on
screen. Furthermore, it is evident
the students’ gain a greater
understanding of the text when
working through a bank of activities,
notes and interactive quizzes on
character, theme, language, context
and structure.
NEW GYM FACILITY FOR
LAUDE
The PE Department has been very
fortunate this week. Gym equipment
has been installed and entrusted by a
generous friend of Pippa Butler, a
Laude member of staff, for the benefit
of all.
The gym offers a full range of first
class equipment which includes a
multi – gym, a rowing machine, a
range of sit up boards, weights and
much more, all designed to be used
in different weight training exercises.
Our pupils have eagerly started using
the gym equipment, under the strict
supervision of the PE teachers.
My Song
Georgina Carey has also written an
account of her composition:
“This week in music, we were
composing pop songs around a 4
chord structures. The members of our
group were: Camila, Itziar, Natalie
and Iztiar were on the piano aside
Natalie as well. Camila and I were
singers throughout the composition.
We all helped out to search for lyrics
for our performance. I really liked the
lyrics to go with the piano, as they
sounded very good together at the
end.

The English Department also uses
Video cameras to make recordings of
students performing Drama; these are
then played back on the electronic
screen in the classroom. This is a very
useful tool which facilitates self and
peer evaluation.

Due to the popular demand for its
use, a rota system has been put in
place, giving all the pupils a chance to
start exercising, improve muscle
mass, cardio vascular fitness and all
round strength.

1 st PLACE FOR U/13 GIRLS
FOOTBALL!
AS Leisure Studies students have
been working hard over the past term
looking at the range and scope of the
Leisure Industry in both the UK and
Europe. This has concluded this week
with a presentation to parents and
teachers. All Leisure Studies students
took part in the presentation which
included an explanation of the range
and scope of the Leisure Industry in
the UK and Europe, the role of
commercial and non-commercial
organisations in the Leisure Industry,
current developments in the Leisure
Industry and the reasons for
participation and non-participation in
Leisure activities.
Congratulations to all students who
impressed their audience with their
knowledge, self management and
presentation skills. This is the first of
many such “applied” activities that
students will be taking part in during
this term.
Mr. R. Ellis – Technology Department
This week saw Laude host the U/13
girls’ football and boys’ basketball
tournament. The pupils played with
great enthusiasm and enjoyment,
with the girls’ football team taking 1 st
place against Swans and S.I.S. The
boys’ basketball team tried equally
hard taking 2 nd place. The PE
department arranged extra football
friendly games for our boys who had
never played in a tournament. This
gave them an opportunity to
experience proper matches against
the visiting team of S.I.S. It was a
great afternoon enjoyed by everyone.
