Enrollment<br />

Two hundred students enrolled in the<br />

Law School in September — 99 <strong>of</strong> them in<br />

the first-year class. Seventy-four have <strong>Notre</strong><br />

<strong>Dame</strong> degrees, 55 are married and 23 are<br />

veterans. The student body ranges in age<br />

from 20 to 50, comes from 27 states, plus<br />

Canada and Mexico, and includes graduates<br />

<strong>of</strong> 77 different colleges and universities.<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Law Association<br />

•» Nineteen <strong>of</strong>ficers and directors <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Association attended a directors' meeting<br />

October 23 and 24. Sessions were held both<br />

days. Father Philip Moore, C.S.C, <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

Mass for the Association Saturday morning;<br />

this was followed by a breakfast. The Association,<br />

under the direction <strong>of</strong> President<br />

James M. Wetzel <strong>of</strong> Chicago, is undertaking<br />

a $125,000 scholarship drive and the<br />

publication <strong>of</strong> a new directory <strong>of</strong> members.<br />

Judges Kiley and Swygert<br />

The <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Law .Association sponsored<br />

a dinner in Chicago on September 28<br />

to honor Judges Roger Kiley and Luther<br />

M. Swygert, both alumni <strong>of</strong> the Law School<br />

and members <strong>of</strong> the United States Court <strong>of</strong><br />

Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Judge<br />

Kiley is also a member <strong>of</strong> the Law Advisory<br />

Council, and Judge Swygert is<br />

Adjunct Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Law in the practice<br />

court program. Chief Judge John S. Hastings<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Court <strong>of</strong> .Appeals was guest<br />

speaker for the occasion, which was attended<br />

by 85 alumni and friends <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Law School; Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Thomas Broden pref^ented<br />

plaques to the guests <strong>of</strong> honor.<br />

Moot Court<br />

James J. Leonard, Jr., a third-year student<br />

from Prairie Village, Kansas, was<br />

named winner <strong>of</strong> the final round <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Moot Court competition, held October 10<br />

in the Memorial Library auditorium. Second<br />

place went to John H. Martin <strong>of</strong><br />

Sacramento, California. Mr. Leonard is a<br />

graduate <strong>of</strong> Brown <strong>University</strong>; Mr. Martin<br />

graduated from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Notre</strong><br />

<strong>Dame</strong>. Other competitors were Henry J.<br />

Boitel, Brooklyn, New York, and Kevin<br />

Carey, Yakima, Washington. The arguments<br />

were heard by Mr. Justice Arthur J. Goldberg<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> the United<br />

States; Judge Carl McGowan <strong>of</strong> the Court<br />

<strong>of</strong> Appeals for the District <strong>of</strong> Columbia<br />

Circuit; and Judge William J. Campbell <strong>of</strong><br />

the United States District Court for the<br />

Northern District <strong>of</strong> Illinois. The case, now<br />

on the Supreme Court's docket, involved<br />

an employer's right to terminate his business<br />

during a labor dispute.<br />

Practice Court<br />

The fall term <strong>of</strong> the Practice Court began<br />

in September and will be concluded<br />

in March. Each member <strong>of</strong> the third-year<br />

class \vill participate in a full-dress jury<br />

trial before Judge Luther M. Swygert and<br />

a jury drawn from the Law School's firstyear<br />

class and the student body <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Mary's College. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Edward Barrett<br />

directs the program and acts as pro-tem<br />

judge on motions and voir dire sessions.<br />

Elective Seminar<br />

The separate course in federal estate and<br />

gift taxation has now been absorbed into<br />

the third-year estate planning course. This<br />

adjustment left two semester hours in the<br />

final semester for an elective seminar. Several<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the faculty plan to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

courses in various areas <strong>of</strong> specialization<br />

which will afford all members <strong>of</strong> the thirdyear<br />

class an opportunity for close, detailed<br />

research under careful direction. The program<br />

will replace the third-year research<br />

paper requirement.<br />

Gray's Inn<br />

Gray's Inn began its season in October<br />

with a visit from Thomas Ford <strong>of</strong> the New<br />

York Bar, who discussed with students the<br />

problems and opportunities <strong>of</strong> law practice<br />

in New York City. Mr. Ford is a partner<br />

in Shearman & Sterling, a firm which has<br />

recently employed two graduates as associates<br />

— Paul B. C<strong>of</strong>fey, '58, 61L, and<br />

Thomas Joyce, '60, '63L.<br />

The editorial board <strong>of</strong> the Looijicr<br />

launched plans for the formation <strong>of</strong> a<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Lawyer Alumni Auociation<br />

with a formation meeting at the Law<br />

School on October 23 and 24-. Recent<br />

graduates who were Lawyer staff memben<br />

were invited to the meeting, which included<br />

group attendance at the <strong>Notre</strong><br />

<strong>Dame</strong>-Stanford game. The Association will<br />

aim at increased assistance from the law<br />

review's alumni in obtaining and preparing<br />

lead articles and advising student editors<br />

on content and circulation <strong>of</strong> the review.<br />

Low Advisory Coundi<br />

Members <strong>of</strong> the Law Advisory Council<br />

met at the Law School in October. They<br />

held a session with the editorial board <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> Lawyer and heard student<br />

editors explain their procedures and<br />

problems. The members also had breakfast<br />

with the third-year class.<br />

Congratulations<br />

George A. Pelletier, Jr., '61, '62L, has<br />

been appointed an instructor in the International<br />

and Comparative law Division <strong>of</strong><br />

the Army Judge Advocate General's School,<br />

Charlottesville, Va, He is the author <strong>of</strong> a<br />

lead article which appeared last year in<br />

the Lawyer on insurance retaliatory laws.<br />

A permanent war memorial hoooiing<br />

all alumni who have died 'Yor God,<br />

Coimtry and <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>" is being<br />

planned to replace the temporaiy<br />

wooden plaques listing those killed in<br />

World War II which hing stood in the<br />

foyer <strong>of</strong> Sacred Heart Chwch.<br />

The new memorial will hopefully contain<br />

the names ot all <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> men<br />

who have died in the Korean action<br />

and "Cold War" as weU as the Second<br />

World War.<br />

While the Alumni Office records are<br />

considered ia be compete tat the World<br />

War n Honor RoD, we would like to<br />

corroborate our listings since that time.<br />
