at the Public Health Clinic in lower Manhattan.<br />

have three girls, one <strong>of</strong> whom was married bv<br />

FATHER N!ARK FITZGERALD CSC. At lunch<br />

%vith Dr. Joe, the names <strong>of</strong> TOM WALSH, ED<br />

PHILBIN, JACK AMNGERTER and WILLARD<br />

WAGNER were mentioned. Dr. Joe said that he<br />

had seen NORB CWANAUGH in Portland, Oregon<br />

where he had been prc\'iously stationed. I saw<br />

ED SMITH in South Bend this summer. Ed, who<br />

practices law, was a Republican candidate for<br />

judge at the time.<br />

_ I had sessions with Judge BILL JONES, both in<br />

jNew York and Washington this summer. Bill is<br />

ver>' enthusiastic about his work on the US District<br />

Court in Washington, D.C. Bill's daughter<br />

Barbara is appointment sccrctar>- for Senator Mike<br />

Mansfield. Judge Jones gave the commencement<br />

address this year at Carroll College — 33 years after<br />

he first went there as athletic director and football<br />

coach. Bill had received a letter from FR. ANDY<br />

MULREfVNY <strong>of</strong> Killeen, Tex., who mentioned that<br />

he had seen BILL MURPHY in Texas and FRANK<br />

KELLY in Lee, Mass.<br />

It was a pleasant surprise to meet JOHN SUL­<br />

LIVAN '29 at the National Catholic Social Action<br />

Conference in Boston this summer. John has recovered<br />

from the serious injuries he received as one<br />

"^f the few surv*ivors <strong>of</strong> a Mohawk Airlines crash<br />

in Rochester over a year ago. He is well on the<br />

road to recovery and expects to return to his work<br />

with the New York State Commission Against Discnmination.<br />

to sec BILL BROWN from Milwaukee at the Boston<br />

Conference.<br />

D.AN CUNNINGHA.M '27 and I participated as<br />

leaders <strong>of</strong> a workshop on discrimination in employment<br />

at the Eastern Seaboard Catholic Leadership<br />

Conference on Long Island. Dan is a fellow<br />

resident <strong>of</strong> Forest Hills, N.Y. DR. Dx\N BRAD­<br />

LEY is active in the Catholic Interracial CouaeU<br />

<strong>of</strong> Long Island and is now working with a group<br />

tr>*ing to improve slum conditions. Dan also continues<br />

his interest in medical ethics which he discussed<br />

at the Catholic Hospital Chaplain's Convention<br />

this summer in Xew Vork Cit>-.<br />

Public Safety Commissioner DONALD CORBETT<br />

P<strong>of</strong> Rochester, N.Y,, was very much in the nc^vs and<br />

on national TV dnrins the Rochester riots this summer.<br />

I talked to Don this summer in Rochester.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> his sons is active in New York City in<br />

the Kennedy campaign for Senate. Don. who is a<br />

widower, has four sons and a daughter.<br />

Afy Freshman Hall roommate, JOE BR^VNNON<br />

spent several months writing a book on Scars after<br />

his retirement from Sears in April, 1963, He is<br />

now district manager for Wards and is located in<br />

Phoenuc, Ariz. .•Vt the present writing Joe is busy<br />

campaigning for Barry Goldu-atcr, ifhom Joe kno»*s<br />

intimately.<br />

The film <strong>of</strong> our 25ih reunion was shoun to the<br />

Class <strong>of</strong> '29 at their 35th reunion this year with<br />

ED QUINN providing the commentary. Ed advised<br />

that our classmate JOHN V. McMANNON<br />

spoke to the group, VINCE CARNEY also reported<br />

that he, PHIL CENEDELLA, JOE BREIG and<br />

BILL BROWN attended the '29 reunion. ED<br />

QUINN informed mc that JOHN LEITZENGER,<br />

JOHN AN*TUS and TOM UWELLE were back to<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> to see their sons graduate this year.<br />

Ed also noted that the son <strong>of</strong> Judge BOB GR.\NT<br />

was graduated with honors from Xf.I.T. Bob's boy<br />

made quite a name for himself as a member and<br />

captain <strong>of</strong> the M.I.T. swimming team. I certainly<br />

agree with VINCE G\RNEY that the neu- libraryat<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> is the glor>- <strong>of</strong> the campus. The<br />

magnificent mosaic mural, donated by HOWIE<br />

PHALIN, which is eleven stories in height, is most<br />

impressive. Incidentally, there was an excellent arti-<br />

^de in the Chicago Sun-Times on Afay 24, about<br />

fH< [OWIE PHALIN as a philanthropist.<br />

JIM BOEHNING'S sister, who was a New<br />

York visitor, told me that Jim is making progress<br />

in his recovery from the serious injury he suffered<br />

when he and his wife were struck by a car in<br />

Indianapolis.<br />

BOB B.\NNON tells me that his sister, who is<br />

in the Charity Order <strong>of</strong> Nazareth, Ky., is taking<br />

graduate work in chcmistr>' at <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>. She<br />

is the sixth Bannon to attend <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>, including<br />

Bob, his son and his three brothers. Is<br />

Bob the first to have both a son and a sister at<br />

<strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>? Bob visited FR. MIKE MULCAIRE<br />

at <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong> this summer.<br />

JOHN IGOE has two sons at <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>. The<br />

son <strong>of</strong> JOHN -ANTUS, who finished at <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong><br />

this year, is at George Washington Medical School.<br />

The Cinciimati Enquirer carried an article on<br />

Aug. 3, 1954, concerning the outstanding work<br />

JIM SHOCKNESSY continues to do as Ohio's<br />

Turnpike Commission chairman. Jim is characterized<br />

as "the hard-driving bachelor" and is referred<br />

to as "the Har\'ard Warwick.*' Jim, an<br />

elected delegate to the Democratic convention, has<br />

been called upon by the Republican govenor to expedite<br />

construction <strong>of</strong> the Interstate 71 freeway<br />

and to settle a strike <strong>of</strong> construction equipment operators.<br />

Jim Is a knight grand cross <strong>of</strong> the Order<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Holy Sepulchre by papal appointment and<br />

holds an honorary* doctorate from Wilberforcc U.,<br />

where he heads the Wilbcrforce Foundation,<br />

EUGENE FARRELL, editor <strong>of</strong> the Jersey Journal,<br />

reports that he had a good get-together with<br />

BERNIE BIRD. Inddcntly, Bemie managed one <strong>of</strong><br />

the early campaigns <strong>of</strong> Vice-Presidential Candidate<br />

Miller. Gene inquired as to whether anyone has<br />

heard from CLIFF TROMBLEY <strong>of</strong> River Rogue.<br />

Mich.? Gene also met the daughter <strong>of</strong> LEO<br />

FLEWELLING, \vho came to the New York Fair.<br />

BOB HA.MILTON, who is kept busy as s>stems<br />

a daughter at Ma\'\vood College at Scranton, Fa.<br />

Bay Iron Works in Coos Bay, Ore. He has a daughter<br />

teaching in ^^iddIctown, Conn., and a son at the<br />

U. <strong>of</strong> Oregon. Joe's daughter took classes from<br />

FR. CHARLES MILTNER at the U. <strong>of</strong> Portland.<br />

sending me a Sept. 23, '64, clipping from the<br />

Chicago Daily Neu-s, I am pleased to announce<br />

the appointment <strong>of</strong> HOWIE PH.\LIN as president<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Field Enterprises Educational Corp. Howie,<br />

during his more than 30 years <strong>of</strong> service with the<br />

company, has held evcr>' selling title from that <strong>of</strong><br />

beginning salesman to North American director <strong>of</strong><br />

sales. Congratulations, Howie, on this important<br />

assignment.<br />

GEORGE COURY arranged a dinner get-together<br />

with ART DENCHFIELD and GEORGE LEPPIG<br />

white I was attending a conference in Miami. I had<br />

not seen George Leppig in 34 years. He has two<br />

children in high school and is an <strong>of</strong>Hcial in the<br />

OflTcc <strong>of</strong> the SherifT <strong>of</strong> Dade Count>'. George reports<br />

that he saw PINKY M,-\RTIN, who is employed<br />

in Pituburgh with the State <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

and who still finds time to umpire ball games.<br />

George Coury, in addition to being chairman <strong>of</strong> the<br />

International Bank <strong>of</strong> Miami, is sow iuierested Jo<br />

developments in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island.<br />

His picture appeared in the Miami News while I<br />

was in the city ^vith a story about the school which<br />

had been donated by George in honor ot his parents<br />

in their native village in Lebanon.<br />

It was great seeing F. X. JIM O'BRIEN in<br />

Miami after 38 years. Jim, who is with Goodbody<br />

& Co., is one <strong>of</strong> my best sources <strong>of</strong> news for the<br />

'28 column, .\lthough Jim was on the first U. <strong>of</strong><br />

Miami Hurricane football team in 1926, he is still<br />

very much interested in the ND Class <strong>of</strong> *28. I attended<br />

a Japanese cocktail party with. Jim, who<br />

helped reorganize the Tokyo Stock Exchange after<br />

WW II. Jim has five children and 12 grandchildren.<br />

I just heard the bad news that PAT CANNY<br />

sufTercd a stroke. I trust that by the time this appears<br />

in print, Pat will be well on the road to recovery.<br />

When a lovely Purdue coed named Patricia Mary<br />

Crowley was widely pictured in Indiana as queen<br />

10, in Stamford. He is a Georgetown grad and<br />

lawyer.<br />

Oct. 8 that his older son was ill and earnestly<br />

asked prayers for his recovery. (Please pray.) In the<br />

same letter he said TOM TRAUGHBER was in<br />

party to larger quarters, ninety-some persons were<br />

accommodated, ^fany classmates were able to come<br />

at the last minute without reservations, affecting<br />

the food supply but not the liquids.<br />

and Mrs. VINCE WALSH, up from ifonticcllo<br />

with their genial neighbors. Dr. and Mrs. Allman,<br />

honorary '28 members. Jim and 5frs. Cooncy<br />

(Foundation <strong>of</strong>fice) joined us, bringing lots <strong>of</strong> information<br />

on ND's future. The Walshes have a<br />

12-.ycar-old daughter and a son. Class <strong>of</strong> '63, a Naw<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer now in the Orient.<br />
